Thunderbolt 4 NVMe Gen4 PCIe M.2 Storage Enclosure Recommendations

I just bought a Western Digital 2TB WD Blue SN580 NVMe Gen4 PCIe M.2 2280 SSD and was wondering if there are any good deals around for suitable external storage enclosure, please? Planning to use it with a Mac Mini M4 via Thunderbolt 4 so need to have a suitable 40Gbps cable too.

Something like the OWC Express 1M2 is great but seems expensive ($226.84) for just the enclosure.

Alternately the Satechi M.2 Enclosure is currently $154.40 (RRP $180 -14%) with their Black Friday offer. It includes a cable.

Based on this there are a couple but are unavailable in the Aust Amazon store:

Qwiizlab Fanless 40Gbps USB4 Thunderbolt External SSD Enclosure with Aluminium Heat Sink

Same item rebranded apparently (Amazon US)

Then there's this ACASIS enclosure with cable for $183.30 at Amazon

Any recommendations please? Thank you.

  • there are quite a number of choices on Taobao (one of the biggest Chinese online market place) range between 250~600 Chinese Yuan (50 ~130 AUD or so) and shipping isn't that expensive.. if you have a Chinese friend you can try ask him to buy one for you using some International courier

    • Taobao is in English now and have shipping options to Aus.

      • never have to use that so never knew, though the international taobao ver. has always been lacking a lot of stuff.

mainland ver. + international courier seems to be cheaper than the one shipping to AU directly.

        • +1

The full mainland version is on the Aussie version now and freight is quite competitive. They do slog you the GST though.

So I find sellers with free local freight and use my own sea freight to here. Just bought two desk chairs for the kids for $380 delivered. Same chair here was $250-280 for one.

  • This one is solid and fast https://www.hypershop.com/products/hyperdrive-next-usb4-nvme… and on sale at the moment US$90 plus shipping etc.

    • This one looks like USB not TB.

      • Should offer similar 40Gbps speed rating but just doesn't have the TB4 certification (and higher price tag as a result). Still looking/comparing enclosures given it's Black Friday now…

        • True. I ended up getting a Thunderbolt 3/4 enclosure. The price was negligible re usb 4 drive. Cost about $75 total. ✨

  • +1

I think the Sabrent line have a good aesthetic to match mac devices

  • Have been using the Volans VL-UCM2-U4S purchased from Centrecom https://www.centrecom.com.au/volans-vl-ucm2-u4s-aluminium-nv…

Currently plugged into a Mac Mini M4 - loaded with Kingston KC3000 https://www.centrecom.com.au/kingston-kc3000-4096gb-pcie-40-….

The only thing with it is that it needs the fan running, otherwise it disconnects when temp gets to around 70c. With fan, it sits between 41c and 49c (depends on room temp). Found it dropped out using the original thunderbolt/USB-C cable but tese issues disappeared after purchasing a better Thunderbolt 4 cable from Amazon.

Overall happy, but having nothing to compare it to, would love to find an enclosure that had better heat dissipation and/or doesn't need a cooling fan.
