Cheap brodifacoum rat blocks (same active ingredient as most of the stuff in Bunnings).
Handle with care and keep away from non-target species.

Always use a bait station. Too many pets and possums die from this stuff.

This is quite a lot of rat poison FYI. Unfortunately, I have an abandoned house/yard next door which rats have turned into a stronghold.

Very worry that the rats could die in inaccessible corners or even worse in the walls

Yep, that can be an issue but in my experience it's rare to cause issues.

RIP all the birds & god knows what else that die of secondary poisoning. Would it not be better to get those barrel type traps?

        • Admittedly I don’t know a lot about secondary poisoning as an issue. In an urban envirnment there are less birds of prey, but still…I hear ya.

Part of my reason for posting is to hear what others use too.

I don’t have room for a barrel trap. We used to use that in the rural area I grew up. Rats can jump surprisingly high - e.g. I've seen them jump out of a 44 gallon drum. Adding water to the bottom freaks them out from going near it. Maybe we should have tried sand….Then there's dealing with the live rat in a barrel…

@Sandaz: Brodifacoum is a type of anti-coagulant rodenticide that has an especially long half-life in the body, which ranges up to nine months, requiring prolonged treatment with antidotal vitamin K for both human and pet poisonings12. It has one of the highest risks of secondary poisoning to both mammals and birds1. If a rat or mouse has died from brodifacoum, small amounts of the poison could still remain in the rodent’s gastrointestinal tract and liver2.

            • @smmammen: Ok, cheers for the info. Your link has a list of susceptible species at the end and a few are around my place e.g ravens and magpies.
I have never seen a poisoned dead rat here so maybe they go under the house or somewhere inaccessible (hopefully).

Also worth noting that I reckon the throwable ratsacks are way worse as the thrown baits are way, way more exposed to primary poisoning of non-target species.

You've probably already tried this, but contacting the council might be a solution.

Well due to the neighbours massive 4 cubic metre compost setup right on other side of fence and their vegetables and fruit trees I've had huge rat problems for 10 years, it's a continuous food source and breeding ground with all the mulch and other trash they pile up for the "garden". I buy the Talon or other commercial rat baits in the 10/12kg bucket it's the same active ingredient and have 6 permanent bait stations around the house. I've got plenty of birds of all types, possums and everything else still around

Edit: I also tried various types of rat catching buckets, water traps etc etc etc, none worked not a single rat or mouse ever caught. Also tried council and since they're apparently not doing anything wrong and are so "environmental" growing own food etc they won't do anything about it

Not going to post a link but eBay you can get Talon XT or GT Pro 10kg bucket ($230) which works out cheaper than this at $23/kg, if you're problem is bad enough, about a year supply for me
