ATO Debit Card Payment Fees To Be Made Illegal

https://www.theage.com.au/politics/federal/australians-illeg…

Laws will be introduced on Monday to put an end to surcharges on debit card payments for services at the Australian Tax Office and Services Australia from January 1 next year. It is understood the legislation will aim to retrospectively make the fees legal.

Interesting - good news for those of us with prepaid gift cards! Churn baby churn.

Depends how big your tax bill is.

I got a call the other day telling me I owe $42,000 and i must bay with Apple gift cards.

True Australians rack up loads of debt by negative gearing and never have to pay tax and incur these surcharges

  • When can expect a refund of my fees. I also want the interest owed and a penalty of 80% as this is a most culpable act.

  • Just to the ATO? Then what is the point? If the government is pushing for a “cashless” society, they need to at least enshrine in law that at least one payment option should be treated like cash and have zero fees, and that isn’t just to the ATO, but to anyone requiring payment.

    • The government aims to ban all debit card surcharges by 1 Jan 2026.

The government is not pushing for a cashless society. They are going to introduce laws mandating that businesses accept cash for essential services, such as groceries and fuel.

      • Isn’t that just until 2026 or something?

        • The laws will come into effect in 2026 and will be indefinite.

    • Just even up the playing field and add surcharges to cover the increasing cost of accepting cash.. 🤣

I hope that can happen to me if I'm ever in trouble.

    "Too hard to audit"

I have the receipts, when can I get the refund

    • +1

Imagine if you told the ATO during an audit that it was "too hard"

      • Well you can - they then just assume every credit to your bank accounts is "income" and tax you on it
