Hi all
Just about to purchase a TCL C855 which will be my first “smart TV”!
Sorry for my ignorance but given it has all the apps available on the TV itself, is there any reason to keep the Apple TV hooked up to it?
Thank you!

This is slightly old but illustrates the streaming quality of Apple TV+ vs others. Especially when it comes down to Dolby Vision support. It's also quite well known that individual apps e.g. Netflix looks better on an AppleTV than any other device, largely due to higher processing power enabling higher bitrates. Try it out whenever you get a chance and you may be surprised.
It's like how Spotify app on the PS5 is awful sounding compared to using the built-in Smart TV Spotify app. You won't realise till you actually try it and see (hear) the difference. It's significant.
That's Apple TV+ the streaming service, I think OP is talking about Apple TV the set top box hardware.
@AustriaBargain: I mentioned both. Both are better on Apple TV box unit than any other device.
Maybe.
I have an older TCL, and the SoC is much less powerful than the Apple TV, so sometimes struggles with certain apps or codecs.
OTOH, the TV can run apps that Apple refuses. You are not locked into the vendor app store.
There's good reasons to keep using it, like not having to learn a new interface now or when you upgrade your TV again, also you can take the Apple TV with you on holiday or whatever if your hotel has wifi. And there's long been rumours that if you are password sharing it's harder for the streaming service to detect if you use an external box like the Apple TV vs like the native Netflix app on the TV. Plus all the TV makers are selling your data, whereas Apple doesn't sell the data they collect. If you have the latest or a recent Apple TV then you'll find the processor is much more powerful, Apple's own chips are just next level, their own designs too so they can make them relatively cheap.

Source? or all just misinformation?
Wait until you have the TV then compare the Apple TV to the built-in OS. Once you have it compare the apps you commonly use with apps on the Apple TV.
While the CCwGTV was perfectly fine, I found the ATV to have a significantly better experience than a CCwGTV.
This is great advice. If you didn't already own an AppleTV you'd likely find googleTV to be satisfactory. But if you're accustomed to using the features of tvOS 18 (accessibility, Dolby Atmos, Airplay Spatial Audio, Fitness+, Continuity Camera, iOS & HomePod integration, etc) you may find googleTV to be lacking
I bought a fire cube for my c855 but when the tv arrived I found the native smart features adequate. Plenty fast enough.
You may find an improvement in processes such as upscaling if that's something you will need, but I haven't tried it so can't verify.
Like others have said, if you can, keep it and compare apple to native.
Thanks all - some really useful comments, much appreciated
Apple TV will provide you with significantly better quality video and audio than any other device or built-in app. Test them out for yourself and determine if it's a worthwhile improvement. If you can't tell a difference, then you've answered your own question.
