For all the people sniffing around Beyer, Fidelio, and HD599 deals… this is what you buy.

    • +1

      This is crazy pricing

    • What desktop or dongle dac/amp solution do i need these days @jasswolf

      • +2

If it plays loud and doesn’t have any static due to poor electrical wiring, enough you don’t need a dac/amp, these are pretty efficient

        • There is something to be gained from a good quality setup due to impedance swings, but it's not as dramatic as top-end Sennheiser gear.

      • +1

These ones won't scale as well as a 6XX/650/600, so I would suggest starting with what you have and using other headphone/earphone purchases as a justification.

Just don't use the front audio ports on your desktop PC case, they're generally noisy and flimsy as hell.

      • -1

They are fine with an apple type c dongle (in fact better than fine, the apple dongle has excellent SINAD). Alternatively, a step up would be the fosi audio d2s which can be had for around $75 on sale and is really all you would need ever, even for high impedance headphones.
edit: the 'step up' may be inaudible, in terms of SINAD, but the D2S will deliver slightly higher power than the apple dongle

        • -2

Distortion and basic power measurements aren't the only characteristics of concern, but they are easy to measure and point at, which people love. There's plenty of high quality amps that add pleasing distortion characteristics which enhance sound (tubes are a great example of this).

The thing you're not going to find on these graphs is how a given amp behaves when there's demanding swings in current and/or voltage, and the latter is key for Senneheiser headphones. Fosi are getting better bit by bit, but mostly in the DIY opamp swapping they are building in, not in the base product.

Even if we get past all that, there's no multitone testing today that actually reflects a complex signal, i.e. speech, music, things you actually listen to. We'll need machine learning to break that apart and identify the differences clearly, but until then we've got people who have made a good career out of listening and describing how these things work, and a whole host more charlatans/grifters who point at graphs or throw around terms they don't seem to understand.

@jasswolf: Hi Jasswolf, I'm not sure if you're the user who has given plenty of input on headphone choices in past deals, if so I appreciate that. In this instance though, you're talking about a $180 pair of headphones, not $10k speakers. The price people are willing to sink into these headphones to make them better than they would be using integrated sound from their motherboard is limited, and having used the apple dongle, onboard 3.5mm jack (mobo uses an acl4080 chip), plus the 3.5 out from my rode mic, I can say without a doubt that the apple dongle sounds markedly better than the other two, and is more than sufficient to drive these headphones, and has a very low price of admission. So with all due respect, I'm going to have to tell you that youre probably preaching to the wrong crowd here

      • I like ifi for the coin and form factor.

    • +1

100% - unbeatable around this pricepoint. I managed to grab a pair a while back for ~$150 on another big sale and they've been flawless.

    • I don't recommend these over HD599. Too sharp/cold.

  • +5

I prefer the HD 560S over the HD600. Deeper bass extension, much better soundstage, and it still has the smooth Sennheiser tonality.

Ended up selling the HD 600 because the soundstage was kind of a sore point after trying the HD 560S.

Also concur with Jasswolf - no point getting the Fidelio or HD 599 with this around.

    • Dammit, I have the hd600 and don't need to read these comments! 😂

I'm hardly using the 600s at all as they weren't as good as I'd hoped.

      • +2

The 600s aren't really 'mindblowing' but rather they 'just sound right'. Not sure how long you've used them as your main set, but I've been for a few years now and many other sets just feel 'less natural' than the 600s - their timbre is excellent.
Though of course at the end of the day it's all up to preferences. These are of course way better value than the 600s at this price. (versus $300 to $450 for the 600s, or less if you're willing to deal with Drop for the 6xx)

        • 100% on the 600s having basically perfect timbre. At least on my dads setup vocals sound amazing

      • What are you plugging them into?

        • Home amplifier (Yamaha, can't recall model), dongle dacs (xduoo, charmtek, apple), Fiio M5 & a One Plus 8

  • +1

    Love my HD560S. Good price!

  • +1

Even better than the $182.60 (for Plus) it was in July!

  • This or phillips X2HR?

    • +1

      This lmao every day

    • movies x2hr, music 560s

      • do people actually buy headphones to specifically watch movies (not counting RF headphones, where at least I can see a specific use case)?

        • Yes. My Cinema room has X2HR, my media room has Hifiman, my PC has Sennheiser.

  • +1

Good for footstep in FPS gaming?

    • Get good headphones, play around with EQ if you want to heighten a specific frequency a little.

    • I have found them to be yes, great soundstage too which never hurts.

    • +3

This is generations behind at this point. HD 560S is very much worth spending the extra $50 (more like $45 once you consider various cashbacks).

    • Thought about that but stock already gone…

Saw about 11 available earlier and now nothing. More might come back, that may be after today

  • PEQ in case anyone is interested in trying it out

    Preamp: -7.5 dB

    Filter 4: ON PK Fc 5710 Hz Gain -2.6 dB Q 6.0
    Filter 5: ON PK Fc 8400 Hz Gain -4.0 dB Q 6.0

    • +1

I built the passive filter here https://diyaudioheaven.wordpress.com/headphones/measurements… to deal with that bit of excess energy up top. I found the top end a bit much without it.

      • +2

Supposedly there's been a revision that dials the treble back well, so anyone looking at this or EQ would want to do a sine sweep before copying notes.

        • Yep there's a sweep in that link above that shows the difference. The new version probably sounds spot on.

  • How do these perform wirelessly, for tv and computer?

    • +3

Well they have a wire, so you’d be out of luck

      • -2

Why is there a photo on eBay of them unplugged?

        • +1

The cable isn't plugged in, it's a product modelling shot. There's ways to make wired headphones wireless, but you'd be adhering something on the side and you need to be careful about weight.

Such a thing can also impact the sound on an open back enclosure.

  • How are these for non-competitive gaming?

    • Very good for the price, but subject to the noise of your environment due to the open back. If you have the ability to take the rest of your audio setup further, the HD 6XX are extremely good when $280 or less and will improve with your setup.

      • Can you compare for gaming - 560S vs 6XX?
I've got the 6XX (pads need replacing, haven't found good ones yet) and looking for a secondary/backup pair, 599 or 560S is my current thinking.

        • I would instead aim for a headphone with significantly different qualities or use case, so neither qualify and I wouldn't recommend them to a 6XX owner.

          For pads:

          Original pads: https://www.storedj.com.au/products/sennheiser-hd600-hd650-r…

Alternative 'upgrade' to improve staging: https://www.minidisc.com.au/zmf-hd6xx-pads Suede version has minimal tonal impact

Some good value open back headphones these days are:

          Hifiman Edition XS ($449 Amazon)
Hifiman Ananda Nano ($800ish Amazon, probably want to EQ it)
          Mr Anan's Nan-7 ($1100ish Taobao sales)
Moondrop Cosmo ($1100ish Linsoul & Shenzen sales, various platforms/sites)
Sennheiser HD 800S is $1399 at the moment too

  • Fantastic price 👌

  • +1

Been using these for 4 years now. Extremely comfortable, great sound. Without spending an arm and a leg and going into true audiophile territory, I don't think I'll ever get a different pair of headphones again.

The velour pads are just incomparable and you'll never want to go back to plasticky "leather" again. I did replace them after the 3rd year, but not because they were falling apart, but because the foam was losing a little of its softness. $30 on Amazon for brand new ones.

I also feel like being open-back makes them sooo much better for our hot summers. No more hot, sweaty ear feeling in a 8 hour gaming session. You just have to be aware that other people will be able to hear what you hear if they are close.

You don't need a DAC/Amp, but I have them plugged directly into my Audio Technica AT2020. I think it makes a difference vs plugging them into your PC's motherboard for example, but I'm not a massive audiophile. I use a program called Equalizer APO and Peace to set them up(again I'm no audiophile so I just use them because it was recommended), and it makes a lot of difference.

I don't know what else to write about these other than they are truly the best headphones I have been able to use without breaking the bank. Extremely good deal if you want "audiophile" headphones without going into real audiophile prices. I can not recommend them enough.

  • I bought these on the last deal (around $180) and they are really good for the price. I have not tried any of the 600 series, but these sound really good out of anything, and scale up to great with a better source. Still have an old ibasso dx90, and I am very impressed with the sound of them out of that. Hell, they sound pretty darn good out of my old sansa clip!
Well worth it at this price.

  • Really good and the Macbook pros are powerful enough to power this without a DAC/AMP. Always feels nice wearing these at night on my computer after using my airpods

  • if i wanted closed cans (at a similar price point) - what would be the recommendation >?
