Seems ok if you're after a small benchtop ice maker. Cheaper than the Anko alternative from Kmart, although I wouldn't be surprised if they're all made at the same place.

  • I've never used an ice maker like this, are these things any good ?

    • +1

They're definitely good at making ice, though in my experience these generic brand ones are very unreliable. I've had two different ones (Avanti and Kogan brand) just stop working immediately after the 12 months warranty run out.

      • Yeah the moving parts are all quite flimsy.

        • which parts move?

          • +1

@realaccount627465746: The flap that scoops the ice out and the water tray that lifts up to hold the water on the evaporator. They are both made of flimsy plastic and basically make the items a consumable/landfill after a couple of seasons use.

  • How do these work? Cant have a compressor for that price, is there a peltier module in them (those cant make this much ice either).

    • +2

No, there's refrigerant in there so they suggest not turning it on straight away after it's been moved around.

yeh has a compressor. suprised to learn that they're pretty efficient since the water is in direct contact with the cold bits rather than your regular freezer which the water is surrounded by air

  • Missus has had this one (with a different badge on it) for about a year of constantly on daily use. Swears by it. Definitely bother to boil the water you put in though.

Before or after the ice is made?

      • +2

Definitely after, fastest way to thaw ice

  • I assume this makes ice in batches, how much does it make at a time? How long for the first batch to freeze from turning on the machine from warm?

  • +2

I was quite impressed with a friends when camping.

Make ice while driving/ solar panel during the day. Ice keeps stuff cold at night.

    Kind of an ice battery.

    But as for longevity..don't know..
