Definitely not the most attractive option, but for risk-takers it may be worth it.

2TB SK Hynix gen 4 drive.

Controller: Aries
Configuration: R8 + M7 + 2xR8, 8x4
Dram: Yes

Fairly good drive, however, this deal isn't without strings attached.

If you go on Reddit and search for this model you'll find some users posting about issues related to drive performance degrading over time.

I messaged their Amazon site about this (11/10/24 - during a previous sale), and they advised:

"At this time, there hasn't been a firmware update specifically addressing the performance issue you've seen mentioned.
However, we offer a 5-year warranty on the P41 SSD, ensuring that you are covered for any technical issues.
If you encounter any problems, we are here to provide support or facilitate a return if needed."

So it could be a cheap option that may work, and you may be able to rely on the warranty should you need it, but YMMV.

Just adding this above info as an FYI in case anyone runs across the drive and is wondering if there are any potential landmines.

Good luck.

I got one of these a year ago, recently I've been having issues when gaming, the P41 is only used for gaming. Checked it on crystal disk mark the other day and it's speeds have dropped considerably since I got it. Went on Amazon and it said the item return/support window had closed only 1 month after I bought it. All amazon did was refer me to the SK Hynix website, which so far hasn't achieved anything. I don't even want a replacement as it will just be the same issue once the drive fills up some. I would highly avoid this ssd

    • Absolute bummer - sucks you couldn't get the drive RMA'd/refunded through Amazon.

So you went to their site, sent an email and they ghosted you?

    • +4

If its from amazon au politly but firmly remind them of their obligations under our consumer laws. See if they make good.

Been using this as boot drive for a couple of years now and no issues, but sounds like ymmv.

    • Do you have bitlocker enabled on the drive? Write speed dropped significantly for me when I had bitlocker enabled.

  • I thought it was a packet of condoms at first

This drive is an absolute landmine, do not get this when the KC3000 is very close in spec and $40 less for a drive that doesn't kill itself in 2 months. I've contacted SKH about this any all they've said is "we'll have a firmware fix soon" but refused to give an ETA

Some serious negativity on this one in particular on this thread, but I crawled ozbargain and can't find anyone referencing this or any other issue for the P41 1TB - was looking at these as an ideal buy, but maybe a good sale on a KC3000 2TB is the safer bet?

    • +1

not very often this drive is relevant, I was lucky to snag mine for $180 but I wouldnt have if i knew how problematic this drive was, the only resolution they offer is RMA which doesnt fix it it just makes me transfer all my data every 2 months for the next (profanity) knows how long til they fix it

KC3000 is a safer bet I believe, but if I could wait I'd setup price alerts and snag a WD SN850x/990 Pro.

Having firmware support, software secure erase support and other QOL things makes it much nicer.

Edit - also just checked an SSD comparison sheet and found that all the P41 models likely share the same controller and config, so the issue may follow no matter what size you choose.

Thanks for checking. Perhaps ozbargainers are only recently becoming aware of the issue.

E: 990 Pro being samsung? I thought KC3000 was a slightly lower end drive for cheaper price - and the reason I'm looking at this HYNX one is that my current laptop is capped at PCI Gen 3 speeds, so bang for buck with emphasis on not exceeding Gen 3 cap by too much (I'm sure the drive will last until I'm wanting faster than that though).

Apologies - yes, Samsung 990 Pro

Also mate! While I have you, check out Scorptec Instagram page for KC3000 sales! Cheap 2TB/4TB today only for $150/$300 - for that price take the KC3000 - only 100/50 available today so grab it now!

Note - it doesn't show the discount directly on their site as they had issues updating it, but if you go to their instagram and click on the link in their bio, it'll link you directly to the discounted product in their website.

          Good luck.

@Pricecheckcheap: Appreciated. double the TB for double the cost… very tempting.

Also your helpful reply helped remind me to double check. The max speeds of gen3 are generally achieved by the HYNX Gold - which I likely forgot and started looking at the platinum and assume given it's aging the Gold would go on decent sales.

            E: Bought

            • @freedomj: Sorry mate, in my myopic drive to purchase a gen 4 drive I rushed through your comments!

Yes, absolutely, to max out on savings gen 3 would be a better use case for you!

Regarding max speeds, I'm not sure exactly how to quantify this, as it would depend on your use case (i.e. are you considering overall max speeds or something for a specific workload?)

For Gen 3 drives, if you go to r/newmaxx on Reddit and look at their SSD comparison chart, you can make a filter and see all Gen 3 drives, along with their controller and other misc specs that may help you in choosing :)

@Pricecheckcheap: I bought the KC3000 - thanks for the pm ! You helped me beat your bargain to the top of ozbargain :D

                • @freedomj: Excellent choice! Glad I could help!

I bought it too, let’s hope Kingston still make quality drives

I can’t believe how much traction that post gained, Australians are hungry for storage lol 😂

                  • @Pricecheckcheap: Hmm mine arrived and there’s no way to update the firmware on Linux? I tried via the Kingston Drive Manager app via external SSD enclosure on my wife’s work laptop and not detected (windows can see but not initialise)

Perhaps if I use Linux to reformat it as MBR windows might detect it?

Kinda crazy, I was prepared to get the sk hynix drives for a build as I always assumed they were good. I feel that bias would have come from reading about the performance of the drive online, but recently I am reading these drives aren't as good - for the reasons above. So disappointing. Might as well go to either the wd black, lexar, or Samsung.

Instead of this get one of the most highly regarded gen 4 NVME for 223 at Amazon currently - SN850X 2TB.

  • +2

I know it doesn't strictly meet the downvoted rules but given the reports of issues with this drive it's really a no brainer, get the sn850x for $3 more

  • +2

Well damn. I bought one of these a couple of months ago to use as a cache drive in my Unraid server but have been busy so haven’t switched over to using it yet. Had I known about the issues, I would have got something else. Maybe I will if there’s a sale on an 850X or 990 Pro. I can then put the Hynix into the PS5 where the consequences of issues don’t matter anywhere near as much.

    • IMO if you can wait, set some price alerts for 850x/990 Pro (keyword/price alerts here or on pcpartpicker/camelcamelcamel), grab them on the cheap and sell the Hynix drive as un-used on eBay w/ receipt. Even with the known defect an unused drive still could fetch enough to recoup costs if you find another bargain. Plus the receipt could be used if needed by the next user.

I haven’t dug too much into the issue so I’m not sure if it’s a silicone lottery/batch issue or something more widespread. But again, in terms of quality of life impact, you’re right on the money with the PS5 use. If it’s not too dramatic I doubt you’d see much of an impact, and if you do you could always RMA it. Decisions decisions.

Either way good luck with it 👍

That’s a pretty good idea. Thanks.
