I bought the RXV6A on Amazon last year and after discovering it had xbox limitations (26gb HDMI support only, not 40gb) - I returned it.

Good luck doing that through a store, who will not want to know you if you're after a return. Amazon is best for that if you're just buying a box and you're not sure…

Having said that, if you want decent warranty cover, you're better having a proper store relationship… so it is a tough one.

What I will say is that on rather average Yamaha speakers (555's and 444's) this amp is superb and one of the best I've had at home for playing Amazon Music from the onboard + phone control. I now have the Onkyo RZ70, and to be honest it was NOT worth the money, I just wanted 7.2.4 all in one box and it did that, but I wuld say that I think the Yamaha sounds better, and at less than 1/4 the price… I'd rather have had the Yamaha.

Thanks for this post - I was about to buy the RXV6A thinking it had 40gbit HDMI but will go with the Denon AVRX1800H instead which does support it.

        • I had this Yamaha and the HDMI 2.1 is not the only problem, I could never make it work properly through eARC

I now have the Denon you mentioned, it's perfect.

          • @CrazyTachikoma: Just curious on one thing, I went with the Onkyo for two reasons, one was 11.2 channels, the other was proper 40gb HDMI support.

I did find a disappointment unique to my setup though, I have an epson "fake 4k" laser projector that does 4k/120hz but I also have a 1440P desktop screen (120hz).. but I found that the onkyo could not pass that signal..

i.e. 1440P/120 is not supported by Onkyo. The dealership I dealt with, and Onkyo support, both told me to "suck eggs" basically, as this was not a "suported" resolution , they claimed it is nonstandard because it's not a MOVIE resolution..

Would you know whether the Denon supports that? I know the RZ70 doesnt, and by extension I'm guessing the RZ50 will not.. I honestly cannot recall whether the Yamaha RXV6A was ok with it or not.. but as I no longer have one that is a moot point…

So I can now play on projector at 4k/120, but to play on my desk (ouput to sub instead of main) , I have to use 4k/60, which my 1440P monitor donwscales , or 1080P/120hz which it can upscale… but I cannot get 1440P/120. lol

            • @DisasterArea: yeah I'd just use eARC haha

that's the sort of thing that only testing to be sure, since 1440p is not a standard resolution

          • @CrazyTachikoma: Hi, there has been a software fix for these and that was done around 7 months ago, RIO only recently took on Yamaha and I have to say they are more reliable than most brands…Yamaha have always stood by their products. these are 8k amplifiers and support HDMI 2.1, today Yamaha is one of the only real original brands left….

            • @FunkyDan: the V6A are not fixable by software, their board / chip cannot do HDMI 2.1 at 40Gbps necessary for 4k@120

they are "24Gbps HDMI 2.1" ports which while faster than full 2.0 ports, are still useless for the proper 2.1 use case

and the eARC issues I had with the Yamaha are not related to HDMI 2.1, as you can have eARC on HDMI 2.0, it was just poor implementation, or perhaps it didn't like my Sony TV

V6A, V4A are 2020 models with old internals and everyone buying new today should go for modern AVRs with up to date internals, the Denon X800H line up is from 2023 and have proper 40 gbps ports, same for the new Sony model, current Onkyos. For Yamaha you'd have to get the Advantage models to have proper HDMI 2.1 implementation, but they are very expensive. AVSForums has a spreadsheet showing HDMI specs for all current AVRs.

      • I made the mistake of buying at launch on the marketing promise before the specs were released, they lied about its capability and had to recall it to do a board change, still have it but would never buy a Yamaha AVR again.

      • Well we can help you on that if you like? :)

Same as us, however we have support with real people with real knowledge on set up. I think that out weighs….plus we are cheaper and no membership required :)

    • I completely agree. I'm a very happy customer of yours. :)

    • Please do an A6A for $2k…

  • Awesome thank you!

  • I don't understand the constant complaints about the 24gbps HDMI thing. Just about every device has a way to work with it.

I'm getting perfect 4K120 from my PS5 with VRR and HDR enabled, it just runs at YCbCr420 to reduce the bitrate required. I've even gone right up to the screen and can't see any pixelation on red object edges, even on a static menu.

My PC hooked up to the receiver then to the TV (LG C1) also works beautifully with 4K and G-sync enabled. Just need to set the colourspace to YCbCr420.

If I'm doing colour-critical work, I'll just change the framerate to 60fps so I can have uncompressed RGB / YCbCr444.

In almost every case, you either don't need 120fps, or you don't need uncompressed video, or both.

    • Good for you, but it simply would not work with my xbox series X… no matter what I tried.
It is possible you're on a newer firmware or something as it was some time ago I had the unit. At the time they had "updated the board" but not the firmware.
