Beat me to the post. I was going to write this is the first time I see this model gets cash back.
It's a shame we can no longer triple dip with price match and CR/SB cash back.

    • +3

Is there a source for that? I price matched + got cashback at Sony online store 2 months ago

      • +2

Same. Quintuple dipped. Greatest ozb moment of my life. Lol

      • +3

I am talking about CR/TCB cash back, not Sony cash back. Been seeing the new clause last month or so. I saw it on SB once but it's not currently there (% is usually low 1-2% compare to CR which sometime go as high as 10% cash back this year). Source is their own web site, e.g. https://www.cashrewards.com.au/store/sony:

Cashback is ineligible on the following:

Purchases using any type of discount which lowers price advertised on the Merchant site, including but not limited to employee discounts, student discounts and price-matching.

TCB uses the term negotiated deal instead…

I hope whoever negged me have tried and actually get cash back since that clause appeared (up to 90 days to approve). I won't risk trying because they have the right to reject as it is written clearly in their T&Cs.

        • Sony are really becoming tight with all these rules. Not like the good old days where you would get 10-14% off with no limit on price matched items and generous AMEX cashbacks

          • @qvinto: I guess the retailers are complaining since this basically means Sony can always undercut their best deals

          • @qvinto: After the last sale where people were scoring 10% CB on 70-200 f2.8 gm lenses on Sony.com by price matching digidirect, CR not only added the price match exception, but then specifically excluded that lens and the 24-70 GM by name in their Ts and C's.

Speaking of, for those of us who got that deal back in late August, my cashback was confirmed on 7th November.

            • +1

@y2k: I'm sure they will honor the previous purchases. I've never had a Sony cash rewards cashback reject over many years so I'm sure it would go through. I got the 70-200mm 2.8 GM 2 for about 2300 a year or so ago with cashbacks

              • @qvinto: Yeah, with the August deal, I got the 70-200 f2.8 for $2179.05 - CR has confirmed. I just remember at the time a lot of people on the thread were very sceptical it would be honoured.

      • Has anyone actually got their cash rewards / shopback price match rejected? it tracked for me as well but sitting in pending.

    • this is not true. SP/CB can be double dipped with price match. Done that so many times, and always approved, most recent a few months back.

I had the 35mm f1.4 GM was price matched + MySony 10% code (can't do this anymore) + Sony cashback claimed + SB/CB cashrewards. so max is triple dipped now.

      • +2

I know, I done so myself multiple times in the past, as recently as couple month ago (got CR cash back in September). That price match clause is currently on CR's web site.
Pointing out so people are informed before taking the chance (always worth reading the fine prints to see exclusions as they often change).

        • I stand corrected. you're right. It's been added to CR's site but strangely still missing from SB. Top cashback has an exclusion for 'negotiated deals' which sounds like price matching to me.

          • @lawyerz: Yep, the better alternative now is to get JB GCs through BIG W/Woolies/Coles TCN/Ultimate promos etc (equivalent to 10% off).
There is one such promo right now.

          • @lawyerz: I've just bought the A7Cii via Price Match, using the Shopback app to track (1.75% better than nothing!). Screen recorded the process inc the Ts and Cs. Wish me luck!

If anyone's buying a GM lens as well with new body, there is better deal from Ted's Camera, You get $400 total off from total and you can also claim cashback making it cheapest combo.
    Ex:
    Sony A7c ii:$2,549.96
    Sony 35mm 1.4GM:$1,614.96
    Total: $4,164.92
    less $400 discount
    $3,764.92
    Less
    $200 cashback for body
    $150 cashback for lens

$3,414.92 making it cheapest price for this model and lens. Be quick before they change price.
If it was A7iv I would have bought it but this deal is making me consider A7cii.

Just wondering if someone can point me to an explainer "tier" list of models and where they sit? It's been confusing in the past with things like the Canon 90D being better (and newer) than the 100D, and unless you really dig you just don't know…

So a best-guess explainer at the Sony mirrorless model tiers?

      (Hopefully) thanks in advance

        Saw this on reddit:

A7: Hybrid for photo & video. 33mp. A7 IV is most current.

A7C: C is for Compact. 33mp. A7C II is most current. It's an A7 IV in a smaller body and less controls but better AF. There is an A7CR too which is the compact version of A7R V.

A7R: R is for Resolution. 61mp. A7R V is most current. Great for photo.

A7S: S is for Sensitivity. 12mp. A7S III is most current. Great for video.

The higher the number at the end of the model, the latest it is.

      • Jason Vong did a very good video on this too

    • How do you do the cash back with Ted’s?

    • It seems this extra lens discounts Bouns ended on November 17th just before the cashbacks started. So your deal is not possible

      • It’s still working.. add both and continue to checkout.. it will show $400 discount. Only thing they could do is cancel afterwards.

    • Anyone had any luck getting sony to price match the ted's offer?
They wouldn't price match the discounted lens as a combo, not sure why.
If I buy from sony should get the free battery with the a7c as well

      • new mind, got them to price match in the end again. And got the battery too!

        • How did you go on price matching? Did they price match for both the body and lens? How much did total come for you? Was it $3,764.92
          Live chat didn’t help.

Cheaper than before though, and therefore a bargain if you're looking to buy.

why buy a car when you can get the bus?

          i am right though

        • +1

          Nah, you can just walk.

  • Whats the verdict on this camera vs the Pansonic S9?

    • I own the A7C II and what swayed me to the Sony was there are so many more lens options on Facebook Marketplace. You can pick up a second-hand lens very cheaply on Facebook. I have never had an issue with buying a second hard lens.

    • yeah first consideration would be range of lens available, and unfortunately for Panasonic / L mount alliance - the E mount has so many options.

      • +2

L mount is alright, Sigma is doing the heavy lifting. Panny and Leica both have unique offerings too. most common focal lengths have a minimum of 3-4 versions, idk how many more do people need.

it's more complete than RF and Nikon Z for sure, and a whole lot cheaper.

        • That's very true.

    • +1

At this price point also look at the S5ii & S5iix when sales come up.

Plenty of good value L Mount lenses

  • +3

A7C2 is a great full frame travel camera.

    • Hmmm I am due to get my 1 ‘treat yourself’ gift this year…

      • It's a good price. I'm waiting on the a7v.

The ergonomics are different so worth trying it out first. Viewfinder takes time for adjustment and the grip thickness is more similar to the a7iii than the a7iv which I found chonky when I tried it. With the a7cii, I didn't know where to put my thumb and I missed a few of the custom buttons.

        • Get a thumb grip for it, makes a huge difference in handling. They are very cheap.

I also got a smallrig base plate which made the camera easier to hold and looks cool with matching silver. The thumb grip is just excellent though

      • you already have a Sony, get the Nikon Zf, try sth different. the 50mm F1.8S is really good lol, crazy cheap on the used market. rumoured to be of an APO design. was the sharpest lens Nikon ever made before those F1.2 came out.

the new 35 and 50mm (non-S) have very unique rendering too.

        • I was always ‘meh’ about nikon mirrorless (used to be a mad Nikon fan since d600 era) - might give it a look now if any good deals

        • +1

The Zf has pretty bad ergonomics. It's a big camera but has no grip, plus it is fiddly with all the dials. I don't see the aesthetic appeal either, it looks like a cheap 70s camera with the glossy paint and fake leather. Also, basically all the native lenses don't match the look of the camera (with the exception of 1-2 low end primes). Somehow, the Fuji's pull of the retro look much better with x100v etc.

          • @qvinto:

Yes, but you can get a grip for it, plenty of options.

nah as a Fuji X-Pro 2 owner, i rate the Zf. I feel like a lot of the aesthetics got ruined by the screen and the buttons. The dials are fine.

if only they could make the screen sit flush and delete that stupid vlog hinge it would be perfect. they also need to simplify the buttons.

(with the exception of 1-2 low end primes).

the 28mm and 40mm SE? nah not a big fan. no idea why they decided to use plastic mount.

but they launched the 35 and 50mm F1.4 recently with a knurled control ring. they also have more pleasant bokeh/rendering compared to their F1.8 counterpart, at the expense of IQ.

There's also nonikkor and voigtlander z-mount. you could also use Loxias with the FE to Z adapter. if you don't mind an adapter, could mount M-lenses without adding too much length.

hoping sigma would bring their "C" primes to Nikon Z. better build quality than my Voigtlander Nokton lol for 1/2 to 3/4 the price.

      • I just did that. Leica Q2 Reporter. It felt good.

        • Wow nice

        • i want the Q3 43, but maybe used in the future. but i read that it's actually a panasonic lens design lol.

        • I also have a Q2. It's been travelling with me a lot…because it is lighter, smaller and less conspicuous in public than my full frame set up with either 24-70 or 15-35 F2.8 lenses (compromises had to be made as it does not have as fast AF or as advanced face/eye tracking, so workflow was somewhat slower and made you think more). There's something about the photos and colour that's hard to describe, they just seem more alive…

          • @Buy2Much: "There's something about the photos and colour that's hard to describe, they just seem more alive…" I think it's your brain trying to rationalise spending 10k on fixed lens camera ;-)

            • @qvinto: Yeah that could be it, but it made me feel good 😉

              • @Buy2Much: oh i completely understand, ive done lots of rationalising myself

            • @qvinto:

"There's something about the photos and colour that's hard to describe, they just seem more alive…" I think it's your brain trying to rationalise spending 10k on fixed lens camera ;-)

not really, there's definitely a Leica look. Blue and Red especially are rendered very differently compared to my Nikon, Fuji and Ricoh

Ricoh can come close in Positive Film, but just avoid having green objects (trees) in your photo because they can look real off lol.

          • @Buy2Much: The Leica pop!

            • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: Not 10k, about 5k off Gumtree. Which is not much more than a good Sony FF body and GM glass. Qs are going for sub-3k. The lens on the Q2 is smaller and better than anything E mount. Plus it won't devalue as much as a Sony body.
But still a rediculous amount of money for a hobby. But you only turn 50 once.

              • @Pobblebonk: Nice mate happy birthday

At least with Leica bodies you can usually be assured the previous owners babied them unless the seller is actually handling stolen goods lol

I think a Leica will be my end game in retirement… I don’t know how much photography I’ll really be doing at 99 years of age though…

not necessarily. lots of wear and tear on my one year old used Leica SL2-S.

the previous owner of my SL2-S i'm pretty sure he dropped the camera before. He told me the top plate was replaced by Leica because it "warped" and the bottom place had lots of small dings too and you could see the exposed silver aluminium.

fuming when i saw Leica having another used SL2-S in store for $500 less and in way better condition. practically brand new.

if you do want to get into Leica, get the SL2-S, could be had for well under $4k through marketplace (given Leica sold it at $4k).

                  • @dukeGR4: yeah fair call actually…

i know two guys back in the day (talking like 10 years+ ago) who had m9's , one would keep it in a custom display case under heavy duty lock and key. when taken out, it would be lovingly wiped down, and placed into a soft material wrap, then placed into a thick padded case. then when home, would wipe it down again, and put it back.

the other guy basically had it all taped up in black tape to hide it was a leica and chucked it around in a beat up lowepro sling lol

back then i was like damnn…one day when i make it big ill get an m9.

these days i wouldnt say ive made it, but have a decent 'fun' money allocation per year…and i still rather something like the zf or something in fuji

                    • +1

Wow, i hope he had the opportunity to take plenty of photos with the M9. the sensor, whilst magical is known to corrode, and i read it's not a question of if, but when. how time flies, M9 was THAT camera back in the days. always wanted one.

these days i wouldnt say ive made it, but have a decent 'fun' money allocation per year…and i still rather something like the zf or something in fuji

between the Fuji and Nikon ZF i'd rather the Fuji. If you buy used, you could either break even or even earn a bit as the market for Fuji is extremely active. Every now and then they have lens shortages. Sold 2 of my lenses relatively quickly with no haggling this year. they just rock up throw me cash and they're gone lol.

lenses are relatively cheap too, flagship 23mm and 33mm (35 and 50mm equivalent) can be had for ~1k each. love the rendering and i shoot wide open 24/7. don't rate the X100 series or XT-XX series however, over-hyped cause of TikTok. and the price reflects that.

                      • @dukeGR4: yeah im over the x100 series, had a t and s , wanted the new one but i refuse to support the toxic scalper market.

what body do you recommend ?

                        • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: used - i'd recommend getting XE-2 or XE-2S if you want X-Trans II, or XE-3 if you don't mind X-Trans III and want the latest XE. (XE-4 isn't a true XE technically).

XH-1 could also be had for 1k~ if you want something more substantial, with IBIS. still has the classic dials and what not. very steady price for the past 2 years

if you just want to have a bit of fun, I also recommend X70 ($950-$1000). it's a bit of a meme machine but the X-Trans II sensor is truly magical. like it has its own look, like Fuji look.

                          • @dukeGR4: what about new you reckon?

                            x70

lol i was very close to buying this twice back in the day… kind of miss working camera retail

                            • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: can't go wrong with XT-5 or XH-2 if you want it today. mind you, they're getting stale now. could be replaced some time next year, although not confirmed.

Fuji said they will launch at least 2 cameras next year, but it's rumoured to be a half frame and GFX fixed frame.

              • @Pobblebonk:

Plus it won't devalue as much as a Sony body.

well, the fact that Q1 and OG SL1 are both available for ~3k means they devalue lol. Maybe only an M won't devalue after they hit their first major depreciation.

                i'll bite Q3 43 when they become 5k.

  • Great price, great camera, ATL with cashback I'm fairly sure. I have this camera, AMA.

I did miss the AF joystick though, wished they could have squeezed that in.

    • ama

      1. What camera did you upgrade from?

      2. Tomato sauce, in the fridge, or pantry?

      • +3
        1. came from Olympus EM5 Mk 2 -> Olympus EM1 Mk 2 -> Sony A7 IV (for 6 months) -> Sony A7cii

        2. tomato sauce in the fridge, the correct answer :P

          1. Wow was the 4 to 7cii just for size or?

          2. Nice, knew you were not a savage.

          • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: Yeah size. Coming from m4/3, wanted smallest possible FF setup. Was the right call for me even though I took a thankfully not too large a loss on the 4.

            • @lawyerz: what lens/lenses you rockin?

im forever fighting myself about which way to go

rx100m6 - pocket rocket of a camera with a frankly insane zoom range, sensor size is smaller than even m43

m43 - i have g9 and em5m2 , i mean..bokeh better yeah.. but kinda meh in even evening light. DR still ok i guess. G9 video I.S rocks though. 75mm f1.8 is a bokeh monster i will say.

i have an a7iii and nikon d600 - love both especially my d600 but against…anything after say 2018 its quite an antique… a7iii i also like to rock with grip, but the overall package compared to anything is kinda unwieldly…

      • Is the tomato sauce opened?

  • Any idea when the cash rewards cashback for Sony will be back up to 8-10%? it keeps fluctuating regularly

    • Apparently it’s no longer stackable according to Sony rep I spoke to in store

      • Damn. Good times are over. I guess the retailers must be unhappy since this basically allows Sony direct to always undercut their best deals

For some reason, buying this kit can only revive $200 cash back. But buy it separately can get $300 total cash back

  • Get sony to price match and you get extra battery as well, very good deal!

  • @Dizzlin, if you see this, PM me.

  • This is a pretty great camera. Better than the a7iv is several ways - better stabilisation (really noticeable in slow shutter speeds. I could never handhold sharp 1sec shots in any previous Sony camera), better subject detection (again noticeably better than even my a9. Once things are moving the a9 has a better hit rate )

  • +1

Single card slot, still awful screen and evf is meh at best. Micro hdmi like come on. But for the target audience that designed with this camera in mind, it is really good especially with this price . Af is one of the best in the business, solid battery. Video is great too if you work around the crop on 60fps.

Just don’t treat it as a work camera, it is you get away casual kit.

  • -1

Camera looks like it's from straight out of the 80s.

    • lol, obviously you've never seen a Fujifilm or Leica…

      • -3

Don't think I have, but I remember my dad had a Canon camera bought around 1990 or so and it looked more modern than this thing.
