  • I've got a Sette 270 I used to single dose for espresso, but it's so damn loud. Any ideas if this would be a suitable replacement?

    • Same here… I wake the neighbours with that (270) grinder 😂 Other than that, it's a great drinder.

    • same boat… difficult decision

    • Although it seems quieter, it takes about 50seconds to grind 19-20g of beans.

      Also, it has a power-brick

      Pass

      • Jesus 50 seconds vs 6ish is quite a diffrence

      • You'd have to be grinding like turkish fine to hit 50 seconds.

30 is probably more realistic for a 20g espresso shot.

You're almost always going to be trading speed for noise

          At about 2:30s he says 40-45seconds on a 17gram dose, so I guess about 45-50s on a 20g dose?

          • @Oldmate88: Well I timed mine this morning and it was 32 seconds for a 20g espresso dose (38.7g extraction in 30 seconds).

            YMMV

        • I have this grinder. 40-50 seconds is about right for espresso in my experience with an 18g dose.

Terrible if you're in a cafe, but for a coffee or two at home it's fine.

I just start with the dosing, grinding, and it's done by the time I've sorted milk, cloth, steam purge etc.

Also worth noting, one of the keys to the VS3's quality results, flavor profile and it punching well above its weight, is directly attributed to it grinding slower.

I have a VS3. I haven't timed it but at the beginning I agree it felt like a long time to grind but after using it for a year, I can tell you from a work flow perspective, I'm not just standing there watching it to finish. I'm usually doing something else while it's running, turning on machine, getting bench prep etc.

    • how well does this grid? any popping? what's the consistency of the grind like? What materials are the gridder made of?

    • Apparently it's on the quiet side of the spectrum…
With a low RPM … maybe that's why it takes longer?

    • I went from a 270wi to vs3. Vs3 is much quieter and more consistent with grind size due to lower rpm

    • It's hard to tell from videos because of the mic pickup, but the grinder is fairly quiet. It is a little high-pitched but overall much quieter than most.

  • wow! you saved me some money as I was about to buy from the official website which is $495!!! Also any discounts on burrs?

    • I think they marked down some of them…
Can't tell for sure as I didn't check previously their original price.

    • Keep an eye out in the coming days, I picked mine up with some stacking discounts/bundles BF last year when the V2 was first released for pre-order, and got it ~$330 ish

  • I bought the Gen1 version of this when it came out. Lasted about 2 weeks. Choked on a medium-light roast then magic smoked itself to death.

Hopefully Gen2 has "fixed" this? Otherwise I wouldn't trust it with anything other than medium-dark roasts. It's a pity, it is a very attractive looking grinder.

    • Apparently the Gen 2 fixed some issues related to that.

I checked a lot of reviews for a while and have been waiting on BF's deals..
Most people reviewing it seem pretty happy with the build quality and results.

      I’ve had gen 2 since it’s release - 2-4 coffees a day. Hasn’t skipped a beat

      • Also gave gen 2, almost a year now going strong on at least 4 coffees a day

  • I paid $469.85 last BF, has been great!

  • Now I am waiting for a sales for the supernova….

  • I ordered one of these a week ago from Alternative Brewing (and got a similar price), arrived yesterday. Haven't had a chance to set it up yet, but hoping for good things. Just need to work out how the hell I'm going to hide the obnoxious power brick.

James Hoffmann just posted a comparison video of entry priced grinders including the VS3, worth checking out.

had a gen 2 for 18 months, no issues at all so far. had a liiitle bit of grind setting drift but you just put a dab of food safe grease on the threads and it solved it for me.

also just upgraded the burrs to hypernova. very obvious improvement in filter coffee, mostly clarity, haven't tested espresso enough yet to say, tomsgrinderlab strongly endorse them for espresso so it probably is much better. annoying the stock burrs aren't this good, but cool there is a reasonable ish priced upgrade path.

This grinder was a love at first sight but after 4mths I just got the seller to give me a full refund today.

Grind speed is not an issue for me for my morning cup, scroll a couple of tictok and its done.

The one and only unforgivable issue for me is the dial shifting during grind. It gets worse and worse, replace with a new burr and then got better and then worse again. Its a common issue apparently
