Flammable / Toxic Liquids Cabinet for The Home

With a young one running around I’m thinking it’s time to stop leaving various poisons and flammables (oils, paints, solvents, cleaning products, etc.) just on shelves in the attached garage. We have no external shed, nor room for an external shed, unfortunately.

Bunnings has a couple of “Pinnacle” metal storage cabinets around the $250-300 mark. Seems a bit steep for a cabinet IMO, especially considering how poxy the “Pinnacle” range tends to be. Am I out of touch? Should I just accept a good cabinet is going to run >$300? Any better places to get a metal cabinet than bunnings?

    Second hand lockable stationery cupboard?
Secondhand office supplies or look for a freebie, as offices minimise paper files, use etc.

    • Good call. I’m in Melbourne so there’s various places which sell secondhand office furniture.

Yeah bro , shit is expensive these days.

Does the kid go to garage often, maybe cheaper and more practical to lock/baby proof the garage door? There’s probably other stuff in there like mower if you don’t have a shed?

    • Obviously we don’t just let him have at it but I don’t think I want to rely on supervision/controlling his access.

  • If you think $300 is a bit steep you obviously haven't looked at actual flammables storage cabinets.

If you don't mind used then office storage cabinets are readily available but last I checked you'll still pay around $250. They're better quality than the Bunnings one but check the locking mechanism still works as it's a common failure point.

Yeah I already had a look. $5000k plus is a total rort lol. I’m not going to conduct hazardous area classification on my garage, so no need to pay that AS compliance fee.

      • So true, I was looking at purpose built fireproof storage cabinets for lithium ion batteries (e.g., ryobi/ozito/aldi 18v tool batteries)… I figure it’s cheaper to rebuild the house in the event of a fire…
