  • Seems great value for a back to school laptop. Display & webcam specs don't seem amazing but expected/enough at this price point.

    • +1

1.7kg - are you sure you want this in your kids bag every day?

      • +1

I had a 2.5kg laptop back in my uni days and it was fine. Any suggestions on something as powerful and lighter than 1.7kg at this price point?

        • +1

for $720.last Dec I got one of these for my high school kid

          https://www.hp.com/au-en/shop/hp-pro-x360-435-13-3-inch-g10-…

          touch, under 1.7kg,

and touch screen was recommended and used for this year.

Oh tested the next day onsite warranty with a touchpad that came lose, they came to school & fixed it.

          • @M00Cow: Anything current? This has been discontinued.

            • @bozzabear: strangely enough I'm not in the market, wait for the Christmas/boxing day sales. I got mine via ebay.

          • @M00Cow: That's very helpful to know re the requirements to have a touchscreen. The recommended specs noted by the school I'm looking at don't list touch as one, however I assume it could be useful for art/design etc. Do you know what else your child used it for?

            • +1

@The Almighty Dollar: Never had the need for a touchscreen in my experience, like you said only useful if you're doing graphics or textiles work. YMMV

        • +2

          Refurb ex-corporate laptops.

        • +1

Maybe if you'd like to grow a powerlifter 2.5kg should be OK.
But the fact that you struggled in the past should not be an excuse.
Some schools allow iPads, 9th Gen is around 400 again these days

    • +1

not ideal for school use with 41Wh battery.

  • +3

For back 2 school there are 2 main issues; battery life and weight.
I doubt this will provide whole school day battery life TBH.
I'd really suggest to look into ARM processors for that matter
And smaller screen size (e.g. 13-14")

    • +2

The problem with ARM on windows is that it still doesn’t have google drive.

      Unless they changed that recently.

      • Arm with MacOs is also an option, though with higher price range unfortunateluly
Or ARM with IPadOS starting from 400

    • +2

      ^ this.
15.6 too big and heavy for Yr 7.

    • Tip for long battery life. Turn off turbo boost from the BIOS. Set maximum processor state > on battery to 25-40% under power options>advanced settings, Win11. Your laptop will run longer, cooler and quieter.

  • +1

    250 nit display.

    • -2

      and FHD on 15.6" :(

      • +7

FHD on 15" is fine, and expected at this low price point. A higher resolution would murder the already meagre battery life anyway.

        • -1

          totally agree
This low spec screen is expected at this price point. But for the full price you can get something better. So it is not a good deal imo

        • The 250 nits and the 45% NTSB is the problem. Yes it is cheap, because it is cheap. Sure if it is mostly text it will be find, but people might find it difficult to read charts and graphs with such a small color pallet.

      • +1

Are people's eyes that weak that they can't handle FHD (especially on a 15.6" screen), or are you just being a drama queen?

        • what if I just think that FHD on 15" is not good enough for me? Would it qualify for drama queen? :)
Probably people can handle 320x240 on 15". The question is WHY?

    • ~90% of school work is now hosted, completed and submitted online I'd say, at-least in my experience (NSW public schools)

    • +1

Not everyone sends their kids to the same school as you.

    • Which state/suburb? Public school?

    • Why? Bec the school our kids go to require one.

  • +10

$700 for this old spec is pretty out there

Same money gets the latest release MSI Modern 14

Smaller screen balanced by the 16% faster i5-1335U, larger 46.8Wh battery, USB-C charging, WiFi 6E, expandable RAM (new for this refresh) and decent cooling that maintains sustained max performance

    • Frankly, that seems worthy of a deal (based on value for performance), given this HP has been posted as a deal twice now.

    • This sounds like a much better option, I would go for it if I was in the market for a new laptop.

    • good share. i agree, but if you gotta have the bigger screen i think it's got it's place? i'm searching around for a laptop for grandparents and they really want the bigger screen, seems like everything new for less than $700 usually has some deal breakers like 2core processor / emmc / <512GB storage / <16GB ram / not FHD screen etc. around this price seems to be where you escape laptops that are basically going to become e-waste lagfests within a few years. The Asus Vivobook Go 15 looks better maybe too…

that said think i'm going to go the refurb way and get a recent Dell Latitude with a 4core i5, cheaper but with specs still being decent enough without too much overkill :)

  • Need a touch one for primary any options?

    • +1

check if the school has a BYOD program partner. You can get cheaper there with 3 yr warranty + accidental damage

      • Yes they do but is 1k. Was looking for something maybe 700

        • Maybe spend a little more for warranty and peace of mind

  • I haven't checked if it's the same model but isn't it $20 cheaper on Ebay? https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/256613059844

  • Got my young bloke a HP Laptop 15.6 inch 15-fc0110AU, which is the Ryzen 7, for $929, with an RRP of nearly $1600…

His sister has a similar model from a couple of years back, which is going strong
