We have had a Cubo coming up on 3 years now, good camera. Ours broke after about 18 months, flashing light wouldn't do anything else. Contacted Cubo and were told that our options were either buy a new camera at full price, a refurbished camera ($185), or send off to Taiwan for repairs which takes 45 days + shipping times (and can cost around $70 - $155). We opted for a refurb just because it was quicker, and not as expensive as a whole new one.

To be honest they were a pain to deal with and I wouldn't buy one just based on that (and would probably go for a dumber camera if this refurb one fails again). Been great while it's working though.

    • Damn, ours has just died at about 2 years 3 months. Sounds like it's going to be fun dealing with Cubo.

    • 185 for refurb?!

i just went through this process and its only 92 bucks!

Def wouldve preferred buying via amazon, they prob wouldve dealt with it out of warranty for free.

Good cam, but we’ve now got two kids with our older one now being monitored with a $40 Tapo. Does a very similar thing for a 5th of the price

just get a Tapo C200/C210 for like $35

They work great as baby monitors

You can set up an Android tablet or phone with VLC for constant playback, or set it to audio only and turn the screen off.

  • Cubo camera is great, even without the subscription stuff. However Cubo support is awful, so if you have any issues with the camera in the future good luck.

Also the internal electrics could be better, because I've known 2 to breakdown within the first 2 years, one caused by a power outage and the other due to someone unplugging it. So any sudden loss of power kills the device, and Cubo support's response is to shrug and offer you an at your expense solution (even within warranty period).

The other thing is the Cubo doesn't work without internet, so not great if you network is down or you are travelling and don't have access to wifi (or 2.4GHz wifi signals)

Pretty poor for something that costs $300+ normally.

If wifi/app access isn't a priority, Aliexpress do an SM50 (or the upgrade SM70) for essentially half the price (SM70, even less for SM50). It's a closed wifi setup, so no internet access and with a stand alone tablet and it supports multiple cameras on the single tablet, so you can monitor multiple rooms.

The only cons vs Cubo is can't access via an app (tablet only), so can't check in if you're outside of the house.

SM50 is essentially a tweetycam (minus the wing decals and paid reviews/awards), and SM70 is the bigger screen version of that.

    • Vtech has app and monitor support. Great support too.

I don't know if tapo does rollover detection and alerts, but in our experience with cubo and as a first time dad paranoid about SIDS, that was a feature for me worth paying for.

    • It caused more false alarms and panic honestly. Not worth it. Their notifications are worse than strangers baby cam, and rely on phone alerts which are terrible and unreliable

  • Highly recommend this. Honestly great cam, software and peace of mind!

Worth mentioning that the 3 stand bundle is also discounted at $349 ($150 off) and $329 with voucher code. 3 stand bundle is better for 1st time parents imo.

  • I bought the Cubo to try out with our second child. It has been pretty good. The UI is decent, notifications worked well for us, and video playback is decent. Caveat - we didn't have any issues with rollover so can't comment on that aspect.

The speaker in it is absolute rubbish and was quite piercing for white noise. I much preferred a Google Home device.

At about 2 years 3 months, the device no longer turns on which is very disappointing.

Based on our experience, a Tapo would likely have been fine. We used a hand-me-down analog monitor for our first child which was fine.

  • I would stay far away from these. They rely on Cubo's servers to feed your smartphone the feed, and I have experienced so many drops outs and bugs with both the connection and the app. So not worth the price tag, and does not provide peace of mind.

    • Check out the Play Store reviews to see what I mean.

Great camera, has worked flawlessly for us for the last 3.5 years, and still use it. The discounted price was same then too (~$225 from memory). Great for travel too (even in hotels if you have a mini mango router).

    Do not purchase this product.

Ours “mysteriously” stopped working close to 2 years after purchase. Support gives you an option of paying close to 100$ for replacement. There’s countless examples of peoples cameras doing the same thing at the same point in time.

My conspiracy is they want you to cover their AWS bill and built planned obsolescence into the product. If I had time I’d dump their firmware and prove this.

    • haha +1 for this.

4 months after 2 years mine has just died…
