  • What is the difference between this and a $50-60 glass kettle?

    • +5
    • +1

Probably just the letters 'B R E V I L L E' stamped on the base. Maybe to soft opening lid.

We've had our current Breville glass for about 10 years. It started occasionally self-opening the lid before it boiled, which prevents auto-shut-off, so we can't wander off and do something else while we wait without steaming the kitchen. Apart from that, 100% reliable.

    • If you're worried about plastic, this is all metal/glass

      • Is the spout fully metal too? Sorry can't tell from the photos so hoping you've got this kettle.

        • +1

Metal, and built-in, big-holed "strainer" - I don't think it ever had any fine filter attached (but not 100% certain).

Pretty sure we have this same one at work. It's a metal spout, but looks like it has a bead of glue/silicone between the spout and body to stop the leaks.

          • @generalpayne: Well look at that, it does too. I mean, it's not welded? Also has said glue/silicone inside around the bottom where metal mates with the glass. It did concern me initially. Doesn't appear to have perished any yet, but probably leaches whatever into the water, who knows! (Water might have an added metallic taste… to be totally honest and forthcoming.)

            • @Graduate: Yeah I was surprised seeing it. It's very thin and subtle. In their advertising, they cut away just when it would be visible. It's probably spot welded, but would leak without the sealant. I don't like that the water makes contact with it as it's leaving.

    • My current glass kettle was ~$40 from Harris Scarfe and it's such a p.o.s.
It does boil water but the lid button sticks and steam comes out the handle and it dribbles when you pour because of the pointless plastic strainer in the lid. It pours fine if you open the lid but you can't because the lid sticks when it's hot.
Not sure the $100 kettle would be any better but I'm be tempted to try. Nah still not paying $100 for a kettle.

    • The Crystal Clear one had lid issues when we had one many years ago. Check the reviews.

We now have a $59 thermostatic glass kettle from K-Mart which has been great for 4+ years.

No temperature settings - no deal.

    • We'd superheat if we could 😉

Big fan of the temperature kettle from Kmart

Is it glass? The last glass kettle I bought from Kmart was described as 'Chinese glass' online but it was some sort of acrylic glass composite. Didn't particularly want that in my water so returned

      • Yeah it says “ Polycarbonate wrap glass housing”. Not glass anymore.

    • Upvote for these. I'm on my 2nd one now (previous one lasted almost 10 years). Only difference now is the original one had "schottky" (sp?) single pane German glass, whereas the newer one has double pane unbranded glass.

This has been a great kettle. Boil it multiple times everyday. Can fill it up from tap immediately after it's boiled and emptied out, have no fear of glass exploding.

That said, not a bargain price.

Tip: Boil a sliced lemon to clean away any rust like mineral deposit that can accumulate at the bottom.

    • +2

Before we moved back to Sydney, we had incredibly bad mineral deposits. About once per month, we used a little lemon juice squeezed from the cheap plastic bottle. That stuff doesn't contain citrus oil from the lemon skin and does the job with no oil residue.

The kettle we had before that (also Breville) was old enough to lose its filter to lemon juice descaling.

I paid $29 for a glass smart kettle about 5 years ago, it has LED temp readout, adjustable temperature, voice control etc and i fill it straight away after boiling. So yes $99 for this is far from a bargain.

  • At this price I expect temp control
