Good ol Johnny. You just gotta take him with a grain of salt. If he's taken literally, we'd all be ridin' a push bike instead and even then he'd find something wrong with it too for sure. 😆

Has the knackered front alignment issue been addressed?

Plenty of reports of front tyres getting scrubbed out at 10k kms

    • +5

I received a safety recall email several months ago regarding this and it was checked during my most recent service. I believe the recall affected 2020-2022 vehicles.

    • +4

Affected vehicles are having the front tyres replaced, knuckle replacement and wheel alignment. Mine was completed a few weeks back.

      • Can I ask where you got this done. Or who to speak to to get it looked at? My old man is having trouble getting this remedied. Going around in circles trying to get it fixed.

        • A dealership in SA. Search for D-Max owners groups on FB, there’s a few larger groups. Join them and search bump steer/knuckle replacement in the search function and there’s heaps of posts from people across Australia. Should be able to find a few in NSW that share which dealership they’ve been to. Most dealerships are no fuss with the issue now.

    • +1

We have over 100+ of these and all of them had to go back and get fixed at the start we were getting charged to have the tyres replaced too !

    • not really

but there is after market fixes

Genuine ask but how do people affford cars nowadays unless you earns lot of money or already rich?

I had to buy a 2nd car as couldn’t save up for a brand new car (coz so much to pay on going rent etc) yet people seem to have enough money to buy brand new cars left right and centre

    • People lease new cars or use loans

    • +11

      Finance, finance, Finance.

A lot of utes are also sold to tradies or anyone with a commercial business with instant write-off benefits.

It's one of those industries that just chuggs along and avoids reform because so many people benefit from the crazy amount of sales.

    • loan it personally, or loan it under company. great tax benefits to be had with the latter.

    • +9

Seems like it's at least $800 a month for a new vehicle worth having. I'd rather keep my old car and pocket the money tbh, or put it into the mortgage.

      • +7

With that sort of thinking you will be heading for an early retirement (like me) : )

    • +5

plenty of people are financing cars that are actually beyond their means, but I guess financial literacy is an issue. the worst offenders are people fronting in luxury cars for image purposes

    • +10

Two speed economy.. There are many people struggling, trapped in the rent cycle (or burdened with a huge mortgage) and living week to week, and then there are others who are not feeling any cost of living pressures at all, in secure well paying government and corporate jobs with their wage rises easily keeping pace with inflation.

      • +11

yeah, they could just live in their car, right?

        • +2

You can sleep in your car but you can't drive a house.

Debt… Novated leases are popular for example, paid with pretax dollars and extra bonus on ecars.

Back when I lived on the Gold Coast near the beach, (Tram, Train, Bus and a bicycle) we lived easily car free in an apartment (that I owned though) AND we rented our 2x car spaces out for $80 a week each that more than covered body corp fees. My partner used her little escoot to go the 4km to work

As you are renting, can you move closer to any 1/2 decent PT and or your work ? that and a bicycle and be done with a car. We had assumed we'd rent a car for occasional trips when we needed it, the local walkable servo had cars you could rent, or the Bunnings we could scoot to had utes. In the 4 years we didn't; need a car once. Better quality of life then suburbia where you need a car to go do things and where we were the things to do were near the door step.

    • Ev or phev on novated lease. Amazing savings

      • +1

        Amazing savings*

*: only if you're in the market for a car anyway.

it's not free money. you're always better off not buying. don't get tempted to spend just because of perceived savings.

        • If you’re on a high income then ev NL gets you a fully tax deductible discount that can be up to 47% so it’s absolutely some free money vs buying outright & instead of paying that amount to the tax man.

          • @ozisaver: omg who let you cook!!!! i take that you're not a taxpayer!

You are right about NLs benefitting high income earners more as they pay less @ marginal tax rate - but it is definitely not "free money" my guy.

firstly, at a higher level, tax deduction reduces your taxable income. But this is NOT the same as a flat discount on tax payable to ATO.

secondly, a. With NL you do not get to deduct the ENTIRE lease cost, b. only the pre-tax portion of your salary is deducted for lease and expenses.

avoiding NL altogether and not buy a car that you do not need will almost always put you in a better financial position if you do not require a car

      • Its not that great. Ive just run the numbers on a range of evs in detail (with paired back extras) and @ their min 9% finance rate the savings come down to the opportunity cost of the $$ agaist say a mortage at 5%.

Ie in my case im $10k better off over 5 years leasing because im not outlaying lump sum to buy outright in year 1 (ie not drawing from savings so sitting against mortage offset)- but then have concerns about about being locked in on low value ev at year 5 etc.

If you have no other low interest debt or savings working for you and would be financing nearly in full anyway, leasing may be more advantageous

    • +1

      My chauffeur drives

    • I had to buy a 2nd car

You should buy a used car unless you already finished your mortgage and can pay for a new one cash.

Potentially another alternative is novated lease if it works out for you.

The more finance you get the more of the money you don't have a lot of you're giving away to someone who has money.

I drive a 2022, and it was a noticeable upgrade from my previous 2020 Triton in terms of comfort and drive feel. My brother just picked up a 2024 Hilux SR (just under 53k on the Toyota website), and honestly, for the price, it’s almost funny how little you get in the Hilux compared to the X-Rider in the deal. Hard interior plastics throughout, no reversing camera, key smart keyless entry or walk away locking, no heated seats, key ignition (I don’t mind that part), and more cheap exterior plastics.

    • other than only copping a ribbing from hilux and raptor drivers…yeah i guess it goes ok.

  • Are they still only able to tow 3.5T with almost no payload? This was the reason we went with a next gen ranger as it could tow the full 3.5T and still carry the family and required gear.

      • It doesn't mention whether the towing capacity and payload are mutually exclusive or if using one effects the other.

        • Calculating it, looks like the dmax has over 160kgs less payload available at max tow weights with 10% on the ball compared to the ranger. 335kg vs 501kg. This is based on GCM which is the limiting factor in the comparison.

  • +6

This is the price ford ranger should be

    • +7

It will be soon - as competition is heating up, sales are down and demand is falling

      • Isn't it funny, people have less money because companies are ripping us off, noone buys anything, companies lose money…

All of a sudden they can afford to drop prices again!

        Surely coincidence

    • Isn’t the Black edition currently close to this?

      • Ranger Wildtrack is what i was talking about

        • Selfishly agree, I paid $60k flat for a PX2 Wildtrak in 2016 and intend on keeping it a few more years given the current driveaway pricing.

Why are ozbargainers so fixated on Chinese cars with no good reputation in Australia?

      • +1

        Cos they are a bargain?

      • Byd has been here for 3 odd years and have been proving to be reliable.

Its not like VW, Audi and BMW are exactly bombproof

        • Isuzu (and others) are mainstream brands from Europe, South Korea, Japan, America, have been here for decades. They have built up their reputation.

…and then the Chinese cars come strutting along, and Chinese people / ozbargainers seem to think theyre the best cars in the world… Like dafuq? Not that you see any Chinese people in them… Also, some of these cars haven't even been tested yet, or even arrived in Australia… Yet are recommended here 24/7.

          Can't help but think… Bots… Agenda… tin foil hat.

          • +1

@smartProverble: To be fair, the BYD Shark fills a rather large hole in the market, and if the YouTube videos are anything to go by, they're doing it quite well.

          • @smartProverble: bots, agenda, tinfoil hat my @rse

no one thinks they're the best car in the world. not even Chinese people from China themselves. i also noticed many ozbargainers are extremely critical of it. just because they're posted here doesn't mean they're "recommended".

have you been shopping for cars lately? did you see how much the so called "reputable" brand/staples are charging us consumers?

if they come in, offering goods and services at a right price and the consumers accept it (freedom of contract), who are you to judge the market participants anyway. and i bet you would gladly use stuff that's made in China? but when it comes to cars suddenly you have a problem?

  • I looked at this recently. Nice car but I went with the Triton GLS instead - $56k end price with a bit of fruit. 10 year warranty, 10 years capped price with the first 3 years free and Yeti bonus pack. A very good deal IMO.

  • Keep in mind the Mazda BT-50 XT is basically the same car, same under the hood, just a few cosmetic differences, I think this is a 8" inch display vs 7 on the Mazda. The Mazda is a few thousand cheaper, $53,990 drive away in my location. Mazda 5 year unlimited warranty, Isuzu 6 year 150km warranty and 7 years roadside assist. Food for thought.

    • +1

The byd shark is apparently better according to ozbargainers…

      • -4

I'd never buy a Shark as it's made by the CCP but I did have a look at one recently and I have to say that on first appearances, it's an impressive vehicle. It looks quality and well made but only time will tell if this is the case. I know this car will mainly be bought by East Coast city folk and new Australians who have never driven on the beach (and never will) and would sh1t themselves just thinking about driving in the bush, but I do have concerns about its off-road credentials and long distance capability. Sure, if you're using it for short trips and are constantly charging the battery you'll get fantastic fuel consumption but get it away from a power outlet and the fuel economy is going to go through the floor and will be only marginally better than a modern 150kW diesel ute. Having mechanical issues away from major urban centres will also be problematic. Each to their own but for me, PHEV 4x4s are not there yet and pure EV 4x4s are a non-starter for the next few years at least. The Shark is well priced for what it is though and I'm sure the champagne socialist East Coast city boys are going to love it.

        • The only decent full ev 4x4 are Rivian and not only are they insanely expensive they are borderline impossible to get in Australia.

By the time I have the funds for one they will probably be bankrupt

          • @Telios: The Rivian is a nice truck but 4x4 EV tech is just getting started and is just not there, and as you say, crazy expensive.

        • What an odd rant. Go enjoy your new Triton and move on.

          • @youfnc: ? Just giving my opinion on the Shark and PHEV and EV tech. - which was pretty neutral.

I guess you're East Coast city folk. What I said is true but don't take it personally.

      • and quit it with your generalisation

    • The run-out BT-50 can also be had for very good money ATM.

I think the D-Max is overpriced in today's market.

  • +3

Thanks OP. Bought one to drop the kids to school 5 mins down the road.

    • Won't you need a larger car for that?

    • Dpf will be full in no time.

  • +1

When did utes get so big? I remember when I was a kid and my dad's friend bought one of these while he was going through his mid-life crisis, now they're all this size

    • Agreed! I'd love to see the return of compact utes like the Brumby, and more Kei inspired cars in general. I wish i had an extra 20k laying around for this magnificent thing. Maybe 30k to factor in spare parts.

      • Eh the current gen Jimny are pretty much that, pretty bare bones tech wise but gosh they have charm.

        • I really love the Jimny too, but my issue is the cost. It was an attractive price 3-4 years ago, but $40,000 for the two-door variant, I'm not so sure anymore. The four-door version looks a bit odd with the standard wheels, and isn't built in Japan.
