Not Level Shower Drain, What to Do?

Hi guys,

First time home DIY-er here

Just recently purchased a home and moving into soon.

Upon inspecting the shower drain for one of the bathroom. We’ve noticed that it’s not been grouted and not level to the bathroom shower floor.

What do you guys recommend doing? I’ve attached the photo https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/242748/117477/img_9781…

Does the whole assembly pop out?

If so what does it look like?

    • +1

It doesn’t pop out, it’s stuck there

Edit: yes it does pop out, had to upclip, this is what it looks like https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/242748/117478/img_9782…

I would grout the outside edge. You can buy premixed grout in tubes in various colours. Just follow the instructions.

        • If OP grouts it in place it can't be removed for cleaning…

@sumyungguy: Circular part can still be removed for cleaning.

            • @MS Paint: Circular part (which clips into puddle flange) appears bonded to the square part. Installation appears correct, just a bit shoddy. If it was faulty OP's pre-purchase buildng inspector would have reported. Disclaimer: IANAP

With soap scum and angle of photo. Only op can confirm it twists out. Disclaimer: IANAL

    • Do those assemblies normally pop out? I've wondered if i can pop mine out to pull out any hair

centre circle should spin and then be able to be taken out.

      • +4

Sometimes the centre piece pulls out after a twist in either direction.

The outer assemblely is typically grouted so would be impractical to remove on a regular basis.

        • Should I glue it, and then grout it

The square frame should be fixed in place. The circular grate can be rotated counter-clockwise and lifted out to access the pipe below for maintenance. You may need to insert a solid object (e.g. screwdriver) into the grate as leverage to rotate it if it's stiff.

What do you guys recommend doing?

    grouting it.

  • The circle bit is meant to be the part that you take out if you need to clear the drain for hair and the like. The square bit should be grouted in so water doesn't go down the side and get under the tiles. Grouting is easy, I've done it myself several times and I'm not the world's most handy person. Just look at some instruction videos. I've used dunlop grout most recently without issue.

  • or use white colour silicone

I wouldn't do this. I would definitely either do only grout or grout plus silicone. Water loves to get under the silicone and attract mould. The gap is definitely big enough to require grout in my opinion and from my experience.

      • ^ the expert has spoken I guess

        • She's not wrong. Silicone would be a bad choice for that.

By grouting it in, water will go directly into the waste pipe rather than splash under the tiles.

Make sure you support under then grate so the grate sits flush with the tiles BUT make sure you leave gaps so water under tiles can still drain into the waste pipe.

Google 'puddle flange' to see what I mean.

Sorry to say, I wonder what other dodgy DIY reno has been done to your place?

    • I dont even see any waterproofing also

      • Can’t tell for sure either one way or the other.

I see some grey stuff which could be the membrane which is different to the spotted tile glue.

Anyway fingers crossed for the OP there is waterproofing.

If the circle thingymajiggy doesn't twist out of the squaresy whatsawhoseit then take the whole thing out, apply silicone only to the drain part to act as a base and then put it back so it sits level.

As only the best tradies in the business say "Do your best then silicone the rest!"

  • I think this is what you have if it's a concrete floor. Something dodgy about your installation I think.
