Cheap Tablet for Maps

Looking for a basic android tablet that can handle GPS mapping programs in the car? I like the size of my iPad Mini but it’s GPS enabled. Happy for 2nd hand suggestions as well.

Update: I want to run apps like Hema and Memory maps for offroad trips not just google maps on every day driving and apple car play is not essential

  • Would you consider one of the cheaper Android phones with a big screen?

Something like a Motorola Moto G85 with 6.7" OLED

Maybe consider something like this for your solution instead? Use your existing device and just have a Android Auto/Apple Carplay tablet connectivity.

    • Thanks I’ll check them out. I only really want it for 4wd trips but maybe CarPlay is handy and it won’t overheat

  • Your iPad has no GPS; why not upgrade to one that does? Pre-owned $170

How about an old 3G phone?

    • Too small, I currently use my phone but topo maps are too hard to read on small screen

I agree, get a head unit with a screen or just an old cheap banger phone. Most tablets will suffer from constant charging and heat in a car.

    • Hadn’t thought of overheating, worth considering

  • Sorry but this seems like an odd solution.

      • Are you following this user around?

      • What's weird is that my previous comment to you was me being on your side.

Not odd. P-platers can't use a phone even just for maps. A dedicated GPS device can be used though not sure a generic tablet would count.

      • oh wow, that's interesting; good to know!

    • Off-road topo maps, phone screen is too small.

  • I bought a cheap 7” Android Auto / Apple CarPlay device on AliExpress, under US$30. Works okay.

    • Can you add apps to it?

      • Yes, Android Auto (& presumable Apple CarPlay, I haven't done). I've only had it a few weeks, and hadn't used A Auto or A CarPlay before. I tried OsmAnd (good for off-road) on it, worked ok but looked difficult to plan a route, easier on phone. Google Maps very good, voice commands worked well.
        It uses Bluetooth to phone

  • Look into carpuride… android auto/ apple carplay standalone head unit. Use mine in my old shitbox car and it works great. Way better than any cheap rubbishy android tablet will do

  • so… who's here thinking it's an iPad deal (because of the 'iPad' keyword) hehe… I did….

    • Sorry to disappoint, maybe I should have that search saved too…

      • haha, all good, buddy! :)
