    • Cheers, will edit

  • @zinkle are you knowledgeable in entry level amateur cameras? Pictures would be purely for personal use and enjoyment, want to go to Japan soon! Would you recommend this or something else in a similar budget?

    • +1

Get yourself a nice compact - no need for all the extras like a camera bag, lenses, filters etc. You will get great photos and you can carry it with you wherever you go. If you get the photography bug, you can always find a nice mirrorless later on and keep the compact as a second camera.

Keep your eyes on the used market for a bargain <$500

Canon G series like the G7X Mk II are wonderful. Sony RX 100 Mk II/III around a similar price.

      • +1 for the Sony RX100 series - this is a great quality compact camera

      • +2

G7x and r100 are more expensive new than this, do it is likely that a decent mirrorless, more capable than either can also be had for under $500 used.

If someone already has an iPhone or android flagship I'm not sure what the point of a compact is - there is t much of a gap that you're really bridging and nothing is more convenient to carry than a phone.

    • Maybe someone else can chime in.

These type of cameras are great if you want to get more if you find yourself wanting to do more than simpler compact (non-interchangeable lens cameras)

If not, most compact cameras are more than sufficient these days, even iphones and other smartphones can take great photos.

My best tip is to only buy these type of cameras if you are getting more serious and creative with photography which usually means buying more lenses.

The supplied lens 18-55mm will do much the same as compact cameras. But interchangeable lens cameras (as he name suggests) let you change out lenses for different situations. I bought a separate wide angle lens 16mm and intend to take zoomed out pictures of the night sky on a tripod. You can also buy zoom lens for sport and wildlife photography.

This uses an newer interchangeable lens system (Canons RF series and will need an adaptor if you buy or already have older Canon EF series lenses). There are cheaper third party ones that are compatible. But generally speaking, this camera will not be compatible with the other main companies - Sony, Nikon, Fujifilm lenses. If you are unsure hold off otherwise you'll be spending a LOT of money changing between the different systems. Best if you can ask someone you know who has one and you can try it out.

  • With $10 price beat and FRENZY24 code it comes down to $988
