Tempted to get this for the holidays as i have never played a MMORPG before and do love the Warcraft games and RPGs in general. Is this worth it?

  when the latest update happened I took up a free trial offer to see what the fuss was about, and reactiviate an old account.
  
  Managed about 4 hours total gametime and got bored.
  
  If you are new to WOW you will love it at first, it will eat your time and steal you soul.
  
  Eventually, when you have forgotten what the Sun looks like, and have not slept properly in months you will break your habit.
  
  And then wonder why it ever sucked you in.
  
  Endless gear grind is endless.
  
  Go buy a game with a guaranteed endtime :O

    I love the game but I upvoted you because everything you said is true. It sucks you in and the fact that it never ends is their secret to making money. $15/month plus the money you waste on mounts and pets and expansions. I love WoW to death but "it will eat your time and steal you soul".
