Chemistry researcher John Pezzuto isn’t convinced. He cites a study he conducted that suggests a certain strain of stevia can mutate DNA, a possible cancer risk.

It doesnt really matter what John Pezzuto thinks
What matters is what OZbargain thinks =)

Stevia was banned in the USA until the FDA had determined that it was safe for human consumption.
All testing that showed that stevia could cause mutations in cells that could possibly be linked to cancer were taken from testing done on animals. This testing was dismissed by medical professionals when they approved it for use.

So the facts are that this has been used in Asian country's for decades and heavily in products by the coca cola company and Pepsi and many others since 2008. Not one single case of cancer has been linked to its usage.

You can come out from under your desks, no need to 'duck and cover'.

Is this the man : http://pharmacy.uhh.hawaii.edu/cop/odoc/pezzuto.php - From his CV - He is currently Professor and Founding Dean of the College of Pharmacy at the University of Hawaii at Hilo (2006-present).

That position probably attracts Big Pharma research money, maybe even local sugar industry money? Hawaii produces sugar - in decline, no Stevia. Remember margarine and how the world was flooded with 'scientific' evidence it was good for us while butter was bad? Oops! Are you old enough to remember?

I'd say if it's an OzBargain it must be good for you. :) Howz that for 'scientific'? Anyway, you've gotta die somehow - I doubt if it'll be one free sample of Stevia that does it.

      • I will live longer when getting freebies of OB. You get the OB feel which makes you happier.

    • Illuminati detected.

    • taken from link:

“Studies in animals and people have found no such mutagenic effects.”

  • Excellent. Just what I was looking for.

    For sweetener or cancer?

You can only choose between 'Mr or 'Mrs' in the title field? My housemates will be amused to discover I've apparently gotten married.

  • hmm to get or not to

EDIT: got it. both pepsico and coca cola use it. and the first link which states clearly

“Studies in animals and people have found no such mutagenic effects.”

AND http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stevia#Health_and_safety says WHO, FDA and Euro food safety authority say its OK in reasonable amounts.
    got me convinced.

No one has commented on the awful taste (aniseed) of stevia. If you like your coffee sweet like I do, it will add the most unpleasant aftertaste.

      try Natvia.

  • I was reading an article about this recently on smh and wanted to try it. Now I can, in about 4-6 weeks.
