Need Help Choosing a Gaming PC for 13yr Old - Budget $700

With Christmas around the corner and Black Friday deals looming, I'm hoping my fellow OzBargainers can help me identify a decent gaming PC for my young bloke.

He will primarily use it for Fortnite, and some light high school assignments. Doesn't need to have a super high end fit out for 4K video editing etc. This doesn't need to be a forever computer, but maybe 3 years would be a decent ballpark. I often see all sorts of PCs in the normal listings however have no idea what all of the jargon is, not looking for the latest and greatest, just a decent setup to get him up and running.

Budget, maybe thinking around $500-700 for PC tower only (he'd really like a 'cool' colour one - you know what I mean). He has a monitor which I got off Amazon last year, has a 75Hz refresh rate which I think will do him 'for now'.

A gaming keyboard and mouse combo would be cool too if you have any ideas.

Thanks in advance! Cheers

Ryzen/4060 build sounds like it is what you are after.

  • Thanks mate, I'll check it out

Got my son the AMD Ryzen 5 5500 | RX 6600 8GB Gaming PC from Tech Fast and he plays Fortnite/Rocket League/Minecraft and also edits his own YouTube videos..

Paid $745 back in Jan 23 - no idea what the costs are now though. I can recommend TechFast, they were responsive to questions and even helped me not long ago about storage expansion.

Buy a 2nd hand Xbox and a cheap laptop instead….

  • Have a look at a second hand PC that is say 3 or 4 years old and with the money saved put towards something else or save it for a new PC in a few years. I upgrade my PC and then give my 4 year old PC to my son. I am due for another upgrade from my AMD 5700G to an 8700G or a 9700X before chrissy.

OP probably wouldn't have a clue what to look out for though

Why? What is wrong with it?

      • Now getting slow compiling larger and larger apps and running K8S and Podman and etc etc

Nothing wrong with it and is why my son will get an upgrade to a faster better PC and so will I, so kill two birds with the one stone.

  • Tell him to focus on school and play sports and forget about gaming….

Put the $700 in a high yielding trust account.
