Be wary that Beijing at this time is bitterly cold. It is good if you're willing to rug up as there are definitely less tourists. But it can be below -10 degrees.

A good time to go to Harbin for the Ice Festival

This is an excellent thing to do.

Remember to slap a hot hands pouch onto your phone to stop it from dying rapidly.

    • ooh thanks the reminder. I guess this will mean less space in the suitcase as you prep for winter unless you've got good cold resistance

Also it's Chinese new year Wed, 29 Jan 2025. Will significantly impact traffic as well as what stores and activities are available.

  • These flights are outstanding Beijing return prices as China Southern just started this route to Daxing, (newly renovated airport, southern side of Beijing)
hopefully the prices will stay down because the non stop option (Air China) was crazy expensive compared to other 1 stop options (eg. Hainan)

    • +1

What was the reason for not having to stopover in Guangzhou now? Wonder if China Eastern will also start offering direct options without layovers in Shanghai.

  • +1

I believe CPP has a 20% rebate on electronics at the moment. You might be able to grab M4 Mac Mini base model for ~$720 which is about $100 cheaper than AOC price.

I booked a one-way ticket with China Eastern from Chengdu to Sydney via Wuhan for under $300 in late dec, which is very cheap.

If your Apple device has a problem, you may need to return to China for service. The Apple Store in Australia refused to repair my iPhone because it was purchased in Hong Kong.

      • I think for mac warranty is worldwide?

        • Your first year should be ok (in theory), but I think only Aussie products would give a 2nd year of coverage under ACL?

          • @luneleaves: For computer products, apple (cn) warranty is 1 year, with 2 years for main components. However, CN consumer law mandates 3 years for main components. Despite the warranty, the price difference is very appealing.

            M3 Macbook Air (16GB+256) = ~AUD$1,250 compared to $1582.90 via AOC store.

    • Wow! Is the rebate for all brands at the moment?
That would be great to buy other stuff like phones cameras etc.

Do you have a link that would explain more?

  • Where are the cheap flights from Beijing to Sydney one way OP?

Would have thought with Chinese new year that a lot of planes will be heading here empty to collect Chinese heading over for the new year?

    • Schools are starting around this time, no shortage of them onboard getting back to australia after the xmas holidays.

      • Thanks for the tip, I will stop waiting then for cheap flights back

    • These flights are a bit too late for those trying to make it back in time for the new year.

    Never during school holidays

Unbelievable prices. With the new Visa free system you can just do a quick trip.

Thanks for this deal! Great prices!

Is there usually a deal for easter time later on?

I'm contemplating booking ahead, was about $100 more than I first looked.. afraid it's going to go up if I don't book and there's no deal coming.

  • I'm not a fan of China Southern, my last trip got royally screwed around by them and buying overseas tickets meant you had to call to make changes (could do it via their website/wechat for domestically bought tickets only), even though they were the ones cancelling and amending the flights and were not providing alternatives without calling. The call center was hours wait and then often they just hung up in the end. Planes were new, but just equivalent of any other Chinese carriers.
Probably just a single bad experience, but it wasn't worth the hassle (ended up flying xiamen instead to get home and they were seamless)

    • They screwed up our last Trip Deal flight by last minute cancellation. They do have some issues with that, but they will pay for a hotel / accomodation if it affects you overnight.

      • +1

Yes they were semi helpful once you could actually get onto them, and fortunately was staying with family so didn't need them to arrange accommodation, but the hours spent on the phone waiting was not something I wanted to be doing whilst on holiday, particularly when they cancelled flights 4 days in a row.

    • Damn that sucks… ive personally had pretty good experiences with them in the past. In 2019 my grandpa passed away and we had to forfeit our return tickets which were the cheapest kind. I emailed them not expecting much, and just asked for the tax back and they gave us a full refund. They were alot cheaper back then though, nowadays, its quite exy, maybe there's been a shift in the airline.

  • Are they any good in economy long haul? 32 inches of pitch or nothing for me.

    • +2

They're very good in the amount of space in economy. Much better than Qantas / Cathay that I've been on for international flights.

      • Agreed, hard product is good.

Can't say the same with the food or IFE - bring a book or something to watch on your phone/tablet. Limited curated options for your enjoyment ;)

      • Im looking for Business tickets to Shanghai at the moment and was going to book Cathay, but is China Southern a better option?

        • Not sure about Business class though since I was there on Trip a Deal and was in cattle class.. (but was much more spacious than their competitors).

I would suggest though that if you are going Business and that you need to be there on time, then go Cathay. China Southern and China Eastern have tendenacies to cancel at times. But if you are going on Cathay, you may need to stop off HK for transit though.

  • Winter in Beijing China, cough cough, is bitterly cold, cough cough, and polluted cough cough.

  • +1

How does one manage being a tourist in China? I hear you need local apps linked to local bank account/credit card to pay for beveything as nobody uses cash. Is it possible to get by with Australian credit card?

What about accomodation? What websites to use for booking?

    • +1

Add whatever card you got to Alipay, super easy.
Accomodation… same place you book for anywhere else.. agoda booking expedia etc

    • +2

Search the app 'Alipay' and link your AUS card. You will get a smooth payment experience as local. But I recommend you to get a local number if you need use local service like food delivery/ grab a taxi

  • Why is it cheaper to fly to Beijing through Guangzhou compared to just flying to Guangzhou? It's double the price and one less flight…

    • +1

airlines apply promotional discounts based on destinations

    • +2

Shouldn't the question be: Why is it cheaper to go Overseas (in this case, China) (which is notably around 9.5hrs) than to go Melbourne-Sydney return? Are we being slugged by our local carriers?

    • In this case it's a non stop flight to Beijing.

But in your case, airlines need to compete with multiple offerings of 1 stop flights to Beijing. How many competitors are there on the route to Guangzhou non stop?

      • Good point, never realised until now that China southern is the only airline flying direct to Guangzhou!

        • +1

It's their homebase just like Shanghai is for Eastern.

  • +1

It’s a good deal, a chance for Australians to see the beautiful country of China, and see its better ways.

Would recommend Xian as well as Harbin

    Need these prices for brisbane.

We are flying to seoul with Jetstar and seoul to bris with China Southern via Beijing stopover $400 one way. The other option is Shanghai for same price. Spending 5 days in Beijing. Checking out the newest Universal Studios.

Extra few hundred if you want to go to Seoul.
