  • How much is it normally ?

  • Read the 1 star reviews

    • it’s 3%.

to be fair if you include 2 star it’s 5%.

one person had theirs melt. it’s the only review that says that and proof with photos. looks like that one cable/unit was bad.

*I don't know if this is what that person did. but maybe good idea not to plug it into a USB PD charger. I watched a few reviews on youtube that said Sofirn torches don't charge with C to C cables. they actually lose charge instead which tells me they don't like C to C.

    • I have one, once you understand the mode cycles its pretty decent actually. Ive come from a Petzl and the worst thing is I dont need 9 modes - but ultimately for the money its decent for taking the bin to the street, bump and bangs in the night.

5 day hike in remote area - look elsewhere.

Looks like Micro USB. Couldn't find how many lumens?

    • -2

it's USB-C. source: I had a look at one in front of me yesterday.
also it only has four COB LED's at the front. which probably makes it efficient but is a bit low for COB, on COB products I usually see like 10 or 20 bunched in a rectangle. so it was only bright on max, well at least during daylight. expect to use it on max and battery life of 5 hours as suggested below.
the red mode uses the same COB LED's I don't know how it works (they probably aren't RGB) the red was pretty weak but good for preserving night vision apparently.

      Couldn't find how many lumens?

yeah detailed spec is not written. such as lumens and battery life of each.

      from amazon.com: https://www.amazon.com/Rechargeable-Blukar-Waterproof-Lightw…

"one charge can provide up to 5 hours of lighting in super bright mode, and up to 30 hours of lighting in soft mode"

review: "It's a breeze to recharge, and the versatility of USB-C ensures compatibility with many of your other devices and cables, reducing the need for extra accessories…

In conclusion, this headlamp is a reliable, bright, and lightweight tool with the added bonus of USB-C charging. It's a great companion for many activities, but its design limitations – the head strap configuration and lack of beam focus adjustment – prevent it from reaching a full five-star rating. Nonetheless, it's a solid choice for those in need of a dependable source of illumination in various situations."

    • ok not sure why two users seem to think I am lying about looking at one and it having USB-C to suit the deal.
I don't think I should have to do this but I asked for photos and got sent them so here have a look for yourself.

Random headlamp with no specifications and a huge number of suspiciously glowing reviews… no thanks.

If you want a headlamp at this price point get a Sofirn HS-10. You can find detailed specifications and proper reviews for it.

I'm seeing $39 for that one.

also that one looks more like a torch with a round lens. it's probably more spot lighty.

when I turned the one in the deal on it lights up wide and evenly probably because of those four COB LED's sideways in a line. to light up a large area on a desk, or a path you are walking on. it might not have 1100lm of power of the sofirn but for different purposes imo ymmv.

using spot lighty headlamps and constantly trying to make it aim in the right spot, or angling your head to light up the right area doesn't sound great to me.

my friend is using it for making cosplay. not that serious, not sure why some torch people get real serious about things. I previously got a response with the words "Real tactical operators" 🤷‍♀️ like what. if you are interested in buying a torch that means you are part of SWAT now or something?? 😂

      • +2

You don’t need to guess how floody a torch is by looking at it, flood vs spot is one of the primary aspects that reviewers will cover.

The HS10 is about medium width flood, perfectly fine for noticing hazards on a night hike, but you can get even wider beams if there are other people hiking with you who don’t have decent head torches.

There’s roughly three ways no-name torches do worse than known brands.

        • battery life. No-name brands lie about capacity, and also get worse quicker (as in, after 50 recharges, a better battery will still have 95% capacity, but a dodgey brand battery will be toasted)
        • brightness. No-name brands just plain lie about lumens
        • CRI. That’s Colour Rendering Index; you know how when you set your RGB lightbulbs to 100% blue, you can’t see colours properly? Bad LEDs can be like that even when they’re white. High CRI is the difference between noticing it’s a snake and not just a stick
        • -2

yes but I can tell just by looking at the sofirn it’s a normal torch style design except permanent 90 degree angled.

the LED is inside a cone shape reflector, and the lens is a circle , so of course it’s going to light up a medium sized circle area at best. I have two normal torches like this so I know. I consider one of them to light a pretty wide circle too, but it’s not a wide area of light.

the COB LED’s on the Blukar were basically right there with a thin clear projector just on the LED’s. It reflects off the surrounding white area probably but the actual LED’s are only like 3mm deep compared to the edge. so it lights up a very wide area, you might think height is very narrow because it’s a line but no it did well in height as well.

as I said seems to be for two different uses. I think because the Blukar is so wide it’s probably easier to blind other people when using it. (It will shine in their eyes more)

        • just fyi I used the Blukar and had it on my head. and those were my impressions.

did I have my Osram torch to compare directly? no because it stays at home. but the difference was pretty clear to me, just the Blukar didn’t seem as bright.

your dot points are are just assumptions based on the idea that a Blukar Amazon brand $17 headlamp quality can’t be good compared Sofirn. 🤷‍♀️

I’m not saying the Blukar beats the Sofirn at everything. for $17 you would expect the pricier Sofirn to win on most features. but I’m saying the Blukar is wider and taller and more even in the light it puts out. just that one point is not so hard to believe is it?

Amazon’s choice does not mean much - generally seems to be popular items. You'll also see the badge on what are IMO known dodgy items like heymix chargers

I've bought one a while ago. Light is good battery could last a bit longer but I was using it 😔 n full power and probably lasted around 2.5 - 3hrs. It's good for the price.

    • full power and probably lasted around 2.5 - 3hrs

that's not good. they claim 5 hours on the amazon.com (US) page, and "up to 30 hours" on the amazon AU page. but pretty sure that claimed 30 hours is with the weak Red mode because it's much darker than the normal white. I can update you on how much battery my friend gets on theirs, probably will take a month or something for them to get back to me though with accurate results.

I realised the amazon.com one I linked in my downvoted comment above is slightly different in shape, but all spec is the same 1200mah battery, USB-C, same light modes, and it has the exact same 4 COB LED's on the front in a line just like the one linked in deal. they must be identical inside just different case on the outside.

      • I have one, maybe the 5hrs is the lowest setting on the first mode (once you cycle to your mode you then hold down the button and it lowers the brightness).

These are great for the price if just for home use (Ive come from a Petzel that broke).

This one isnt good for long hikes but gets the job done in a pinch

        • I don’t hav me access to it right now so can’t test.

but amazon page suggests just high and low on white mode, and that’s how it worked when I tried it. one click for high, then another for low.

US page says “5 hours of lighting in super bright mode, and up to 30 hours of lighting in soft mode.” so 5 hours sounds like on high to me.
          https://www.amazon.com/Rechargeable-Blukar-Waterproof-Lightw…

maybe if Tuff only got 3 hours it had a bad battery. or left it on the charger too long? you can overcharge some cheap USB devices.

  • I have this light (I paid $17.84 in July), I brought it to do some work in my roof cavity.

The build quality is pretty good, in particular the strap is thick and durable. Very comfortable to wear. The light can be angled up and down. The sensor mode is gimmicky and you have to be careful to ensure it's off because the light will unexpectedly switch off randomly with it enabled.

For brightness, it's fairly good. The brightness isn't as amazing as the product page suggests, but it's bright enough. If you want the brightest headlamp this isn't it. Battery seems to last.

If you want a comfortable headlamp, go for this. $18 seems like a fair price, but I wouldn't call it a fantastic deal.

If there are any questions, ask away.

  • I have one of these. Use it for camping and hiking. I rate it highly for the price. Adjustable brightness, red light works well, rechargeable by USB C. Not as good as the black diamond spot but that was 4x the price. Perfect for the kids if camping since not much $ if they lose or break it.

    • Not as good as the black diamond spot but that was 4x the price. Perfect for the kids if camping since not much $ if they lose or break it.

yeah that's what I mean. I thought ozbers loved the lowest price stuff that isn't technically landfill (I have sometimes seem landfill good voted through the roof though).

also ideal for someone who isn't some outdoorsy expert, but needs something for a particular task. or maybe average to low use every week compared to someone that needs it to get back to their tent in the forest at night. I saw a $140+ headlamp posted recently and I thought who is going to spend that much. 😂

since the torch experts haven't either clicked, or don't know yet what the benefit of new COB LED's are. I searched it up and found a good summary.

"Simply put, COB LEDs are brighter, consume less power, and output a higher quality beam of light compared to older LED technologies found in …"

also the anti-static ability is stronger in COB. I don't know enough about this but good to know I guess.

    • +1

Chip-on-board LEDs aren't new, this is just marketing drivel. The article you pasted that from is over 7 years old already lol.

      • well I asked in the previous post for COB + and -‘s and nobody commented at all so I had to quickly look it up myself.

        mostly positive maybe that’s why..

can you tell me the real info then if it’s marketing drivel?

        • +1

It's marketing drivel in that it's commonplace technology and has been for years. It would be like a car company trying to market their new "hybrid" car as a radical new innovation in 2024.

          • -1

@kbw: so you don’t know yourself.. what are the +’s and -‘s to COB LED’s??

I thought if you are going to point out the info is wrong you would know the real info.

at least know the true answer if you are going to try and dismiss what I found on Google. and I don’t mean “search google for the answer now” that’s what I did.

maybe someone more knowledgeable can answer then.

            • +1

@n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: Not sure what you're trying to achieve here, pretty much any headlamp you find is going to be COB. You're seeming to suggest it's an advantage over others when it's like bragging that your house has windows?

              • @kbw: why do you refuse to answer and just bad vote?

I am even open to hearing the negatives of COB. but you just don’t know do you. That’s fine with me.

when I searched up COB LED it said it was a new LED design and not many torches use them yet.

(I didn’t call you dumb btw, just seen a lot of torch people on here so they should comment the answer easily)

                • +2

@n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: What @kbw is trying to say is most LED torches these days are COB LEDs. There are very few that are now SMD or DIP LEDs. If the torch aren't COB, then the torch must be very old stock, probably over 10 years old. So that is the real info, it's a technology feature you should already expect in a LED torch. It's nothing new.

                  • -2

                    @bogak:

most LED torches these days are COB LEDs.

ok that explains it better thank you. all I got from kbw’s 2nd reply was “it’s been commonplace technology” which just told me the technology has been around for awhile. not that now nearly every torch used them.

I also have been watching many torch videos on YouTube because they know I tap on them now, and watched a review I think of a special LEP torch? and because it’s shoots out straight like a laser they mentioned it’s surrounded by COB LED’s so that it can do wide floody light as well.
in that review the guy said COB LED’s aren’t very common in torches in general. but might have been posted a few years ago I don’t remember the upload date.

anyway so I have a small torch with Osram P8 LED, does it mean this is a COB LED in my torch? also just got a Olight keychain torch I assume that is a COB LED as well?

I was confused because they look completely different. most torches on Amazon that mentioned COB usually have a flat yellow area with multiple COB’s on it, like usually 10 or more. which looks nothing like the single square LED on my Osram torch.

the LEP torch also had this 0.5cm yellow ring around the outside edge, with multiple COB’s on it. so it made sense to me that looked like a COB LED.

                    • @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: Not sure, Googling around photo show a yellow covered LED, so most probably it's a COB. COB LEDs are usually just a flat surface covered with yellow silicone as the light it produces is blue, and the yellow converts it to a more white light.

                      • @bogak: I just had a close look with the torch off. yes it’s a single square but with yellow circle on it. must be COB. I asked my friend and they said their torch is the same. square with yellow circle.

so they are all COB’s. didn’t know that. I thought COB’s were always on a larger flat yellow area (board?). I thought maybe each one was also a bit dimmer than “normal square LED’s” (I know I’m wrong here now) because they usually had more than one all bunched together on the board.

so all these normal looking torches posted here like this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/871903

are all COB LED too. got it. I thought the square ones in them they were just called LED’s.
