Breville The Dual Boiler Espresso Machine BES920BSS $1299 Delivered / C&C / In-Store @ MYER

160

A couple of hundred off for the oh so divisive dual boiler. I'm aware the price has been lower but hasn't been anywhere close to sub 1000 for a long time. Also available on Amazon for the same price.

I’ve got a Timemore Mini - fits nicely on the drip tray.

  • coming off all over for the black model so avoid this.

What do you think causes the paint to come off?

  • For me, I had it for 3 years until it broke down last week due to blown triac causing coffee boiler to overheat to 115c. It was out of warranty so had to pay repair or fix it myself. Decided to go down DIY. Popped the machine open and saw one triac burnt. Bought a replacement triac board from ebay and waiting for replacement to arrive. I found few spots of scale and rust inside the machine which suggest there's some leak so have to run the machine with cover open to see where and what's leaking.

I followed the maintenance guide: use cleaning tablet every 200 shots and replace filter and descale every 3 months. I've just been using tap water.

No problem with the steam wand at this moment.

  • All these comments getting me worried. My machine is 2.5 years old now and has done ~2K extractions and hasn't missed a beat. Fingers crossed I can get many more years out of it/with some minor self maintenance.

My old prior BES860 lasted 9 years (with no servicing) and died after a massive internal water leak ruined the electronics.

    • Take it in for a service. Service the machine every 2 -3 years and you can't go wrong

    • Just keep an eye on it and get it looked at as soon as it starts acting up or you see any issues - which I generally found was around the 4 to 5 year mark.

When I worked on them, they were by far the most common machine we'd get in - both because they are very popular, and very unreliable. Often customers would just continue using it despite something being a little different, or seeing a little bit of a leak. This would cause massive issues by the time they got around to bringing it in, to the point it often wouldn't be worth the $ fixing it. Or they didn't want to wait for months while Breville was out of stock of parts.

Seriously people, just stop using it if there's an issue, you'll only make things worse

This machine is by the far the best value money can buy. The quality of the coffee this machine produces can't be beaten.

I've had my original for 13 years and still going strong.

I have had Breville Dual boiler machines since 2014, and am on my 3rd one (although the second one leaked steam and hissed a few weeks in, was refunded).

    What I learned:
    1. Regular maintenance on these is absolutely key. The machine tells you when to run a clean cycle, filter change and so on - do it whenever it tells you to.
    2. Get the machine serviced before the 2y warranty expires. I have found they usually descale and change the O-rings, and will fix any issues outstanding within the warranty period (there may be a service fee here but suspect there will not be if they find anything wrong).
    3. After warranty, do this every 2 years (charge for service applies).
    4. The moment you hear hissing inside the machine, switch it off immediately, empty it and take it in to the service centre and get it looked at, likely o-rings. Not doing anything at this point will lead to more expensive problems (triac etc and water related damage).

    TL;DR
I think many see Breville as a cheap appliance and never consider sending it in for regular servicing.
Keeping the Dual Boiler properly maintained with regular servicing should stop most problems from developing into expensive ones - like you would if you had a LaMarzocco or any other high end espresso machine.

Your post has served as a good reminder for me, my two-year warranty expires on 12-12-24. I've just booked my machine in to the local Breville authorized repairer for a pre-emptive maintenance service.

It will be interesting to see how the service agent charges given the machine is still within its initial warranty period.

Id like to know much the service cost when under warranty cause mine is outside warranty and i do start to hear some hissing even after turning off the machine!

I have an approved day off on the 15th of this month already to attend an appointment, I plan on dropping the machine in for its service on this day as well.

I'm happy to come back afterwards and update this thread on any costs involved for the service for anyone interested.

I'd advise not to use your machine anymore until you get it looked at otherwise you risk more costlier repairs.

        • You can always self service your own machine! There are plenty of guides out there on disassemble and repair it.
Loosen the screws at the front, back and pop the top off. Replace the O rings. The gradual build up of condensation and water in the system can damage other components and make it a simple maintenance job to a costly repair.

Hissing sounds like it's most likely a problem with the o-rings on the probes. If replacing the o-rings on the probes doesn't fix it, it may be the smaller o-ring on the bottom of the probes which typically isn't replaced in common maintenance.

  • I'm surprised and disappointed to see all the comments about the short life span. I'm looking to replace my Sunbeam EM7000 which I bought 2nd hand 10 years ago as the steam pump has failed, and was just waiting for the bes920 to come on special.

I've been really happy with coffees I make with the Sunbeam despite using unfiltered water and not doing any maintenance (other than a couple of small DIY repairs), but have seen some users saying that the later model (EMM7200) isn't as durable.

Now I'm wondering if the bes920 is worth the extra price, all things considered. Sounds like it is more fragile with more to go wrong.

Without proper maintenance everything will fail.

      Re: pump
Vibration pump is a consumable part - it will last around 5000 on-off cycles regardless of the machine brand.
