My Vet says they can do an injection that covers all this for a year think it was around $100, we are running down our last tablets this month and getting that done as easier to not forget month on month and value is good.

    • Definitely sounds like a good option it covers everything

    • +2

I personally avoid the yearly injection, if your dog is on tablets, keep them on the same in my opinion. In saying that we lost the sister of our girl due to the injection. Yet the vet claimed it wasn't the injections fault, bs.

    • Plus vet appointment fee?

      • +1

Depends how you roll, cos ours get routine check-ups anyway

    • That's interesting id much prefer this, any idea what it was called?

    • Interesting, what is it called?

    • +9

News to me! There is a yearly injection for heartworm, and a separate yearly injection thats meant to cover fleas and ticks called Bravecto Quantum. Then you still have worming to deal with. So there is no "all in one" injection as far as i know. And id not want to be among the first to be using it if there was. Personally id stick to whatever your existing routine is unless you do a lot of research first. All these things at the end of the day are like targeted poisons and at best are rough on the animals system.

      • The ingredient in the injection appears to be an analogue of one of the two ingredients in these monthly tablets, so you are exposing your dog to effectively the same drug. However the concentration in the blood following a tablet formulation will likely have peaks and troughs, while the injection will be a relatively constant concentration over time.

I haven't seen the data but based on how these formulations usually are absorbed it's more likely the tablets will cause side effects as they will result in higher blood levels of drug at certain times.

      • I personally have know 3 people who lost their dog the next day after taking Bravecto. Coincidence? Given my circle is quite small seems strange.

    • I asked my vet about this a few weeks ago and she said you still have give your dog heartworm tablets every month

    • Yeah my vet has been pushing this too. Bravecto Quantum. This will prompt me to do research.

    • I have done that for my dog but that only covers heartworm. You still need to give it the other treatments. In my case instead of nextguard spectra I have to give just the plain nexgaurd still monthly.

    • I discussed it with our Vet on Monday. The injection doesn't cover worms so you still need worming tablets.

We decided to stick with tablets.

  • the coupon code is not valid? code doesnt work for me..

    • Didn't work till i logged in

      • Thanks - the other account worked. Great deal

    great price, thx OP

  • We use Simparica Trio, is nexgard better?

    • I'm pretty sure they cover much the same. Both are monthly doses.

We used nexguard as our dog would just eat the whole thing with no issue, however one day after easting it he got sick and obviously wasn't feeling well for a day and he would refuse to eat it.

Swapped to simparica trio and we just chop it up small and put it with egg and he eats it.

Do check packaging and check with your vet if your u intend to swap.

      • We use simparica trio for our dogs, they eat it willingly (fussy oodles). Use Milbemax for all wormer.

    • +1

They seem similar but our vet recommends Nexgard slightly higher. Both good options though.

      • +3

Vets are predominantly glorified reps for pharma and pet food companies when it comes to giving recommendations. Advice quality varies wildly. Use them as an indicator for what to read into further, not so much gospel.

        • That article looks like it was written by an LLM.

    • Its all the same same. Simparica is slightly cheaper thats why I use it

  • +5

Great deal. I also buy the next size up and split the tablet in half.

    • +1

I’ve read advice online against this as the active ingredients may not be equally dispersed through the chewable. Fake news?

      • +2

Logically possible. Either buy the 'right' size, or cut into quarters and mix them up?

@MentalConfection thanks for the tip and @RogueWolf good find, I've stocked up on these and few treats mine have recently missed out on.

      • A chewable tablet is unlikely to be formulated in such a way that the ingredients are not spread evenly. That advice would be valid for something that is formulated to have slow/timed release (which cannot be chewed).

Don't believe me though, call the company number and ask. Make sure to ask for a direct answer to the question and not what they 'recommend' (i.e because they think you won't be able to split them evenly as they will crumble).

There are reasons given why you can't split tablets here notice they are about covering their ass and not logical. They don't make the tablets one by one they make them in batches of thousands at a time, so if each tablet coming out of production needs to have the same amount of drug (at the milligram scale), saying that there is a risk an an individual tablet has uneven distribution of drug is completely illogical, that would mean there is a risk that each tablet in the box is not the same.

What is an actual risk is that the remaining half will degrade as you have removed it from the packaging and left it out for a month.

        • homogenisation is basic thing is in food science and Pharmaceutical industry, sound like every aussie encounter with roos in the life somehow.

      • +1

Opening a tablet and exposing it to air might be a concern, but split a tablet to save money is probably okay, especially when weight is at borderline.

The tablets are packaged by range:

        From (kg) To (kg)
        Very Small 1.35 3.5
        Small 3.6 7.5
        Medium 7.6 15.0
        Large 15.1 30.0
        Very Large 30.1 60.0

If a 15.1-20kg dog taking a tablet that contains effective ingredients for a 30kg dog is not over dosing, then splitting a 60kg tablet allows huge tolerance, unlikely one half has less than 30%, the other half has more than 70%.

Hi, just some notes from a DVM student on Sarolaner (Simparica Trio) and Afoxolaner (Nexgard Spectra) based monthly antiparasitics:

-It's tempting to buy the size up and split to get more out of the box; just be careful active ingredients are not evenly distributed in these products and you could increase the chance of an adverse reaction or reduce the efficacy of the drug.

-While these products cover most hookworms and roundworms, if you are at high risk for tapeworms, such as living on a sheep property, raw feeding your animals (especially sheep or kangaroo offal), or if your dog has the ability to scavenge carcasses. You should use an additional praziquantel-based worming tablet as hydatid tapeworm (Echinococcus granulosus) is zoonotic and can pose a risk to humans.

-The on-box claim of "controlling flea tapeworm" is through controlling fleas, no fleas —> no flea tapeworm, it does not actively treat flea tapeworms.

-Please use these products if you live in a paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus) endemic region.

    • Can we use nexgard spectra and drontal? Is this a good combo to protect from all?

      • +2

Drontal and Nexguard spectra would cover pretty much everything. Drontal is different from something like a Paragard because it contains an additional drug called Febantel, which is used to treat Giardia, a type of zoonotic protozoan. In terms of dose rate, hydatid tapeworm can start shedding eggs from a dog in 7 weeks once infected; if you are classed as high risk, I would use Drontal every 6 weeks.
However, most people don't fall under a high-risk category, so the dose rate would vary from person to person based on individual circumstances and is something best discussed with your vet during the next checkup.

        • What do you think about Drontal with Simparica Trio? Would that cover everything?

          • @sopranolog: Simparica trio is not labelled for the treatment of whipworms, but Drontal is and will cover what the Simparica doesn't.

    • Are Virbac tapewormer tablets effective in conjunction with NexGard?

    • +1

Disclaimer: Please note that our 12 packs are designed for multi-dog households and are sold as 2 x 6 packs. We cannot guarantee a 12-month expiry on these items.

      • +2

Thanks. That's fine. Kept in a cool dry place.

      • +1

Expiry dates for the Extra large were 10/25 which is fine. Came in 2 separate boxes of 6.

wow i thought half trick is good and now you come up with 1 tablet divides into 4. amazing
but are you sure it will still work?
so the tablet for large dog ingridients are 4x of the small ?

      • I believe the manufacturer's advice is not to do this as the active ingredients may not be evenly distributed. Seems to be pretty common though. I guess if concerned you could cut into many smaller pieces before splitting to reduce the risk of over or under dosing. Personally I just buy six months of the 'right' size to keep things simple.

Any website that has you create an account to check out rather than having guest checkout can go F itself.

I'll happily create an account for a discount like this…

Thank you OP. Another 6 months sorted.

Great price but was advised expiry date for the large 6 pack from Sydney warehouse is July 2025 and already have tablets still to use. Got the large 6 pk for a bit more from Petbarn today with April 2026 expiry

    • Damn, I still have 4 left so I will have 2 expired tablets if the expiry date is July 2025. Mine is medium so I'm hoping that's not the case.

    • Received today expiry is 04/26 for large

      • Also received today and expiry was 04/26 also.

  • I didnt see this post until after i purchased from Petbarn. Do they match with the coupon code? Only around $5 more after cashback so not too fussed.

    • not sure about you but i rarely buy stuffs from PB. always check PC, 90% of the time PC is cheaper

      • Yes cheaper at PC but short expiry. I still have 6 tablets left so most of the new stock would expire by the time I need them.

  • +3

Tried to order 2x 6 packs and it capped the couple to $20

  • Code isnt working for me :(
