PSA: Don't Cancel Your AmEx Qantas Card until You've Used The Travel Credit

  • Checked my AMEX Travel Credit and can see $450 credit
  • Read OzB comments that said you can still use this credit after cancelling the credit card.
  • Cancelled the credit card a few months ago
  • Went to make a booking today, and can confirm that you need to have your card active in order to use the credit.

How the travel credit works:
You pay for it out of pocket first, and then they credit $450 to your amex account.
So unfortunately I can no longer use my $450 AMEX Travel Credit, despite the fact that I can still view it in the portal!

We are sorry to know that you have closed your account with us.
You are correct, if your card cancellation was already processed, any benefits on your account will be forfeited and can no longer be used.

    You can use the travel credit for a future flight and then cancel the card before the flight. Maybe that is what you saw someone mention.

    Sounds logical, cancel the card and lose your entitlements. Why would anyone think otherwise? Why is this a PSA?

    Something similar happened to me when I was playing monopoly and sold my get out of jail free card but then later needed it

    Reason being is that you need to book through the Amex Travel portal and you must use the Amex card to pay for the balance amount over $450. Always been this way.

    PSA - For non-Qantas and non-Velocy Amex cards, you will lose any reward points that you have accrued if you don't use them before cancelling your card.
