Ryzen 7 9800X3D or 7 7800X3D I Have Been Offered Upgrade on Pending Build

Hi Brains trust. I am waiting for the Techfast 7 7800X3D 4070Ti super PC new build to be built …day 12.

Just received email from Techfast with the offer to hold off completion and wait for the new 7 9800x3D which is said to be released on 7 November. No indication of price differences ATM. On the original Parts Picker 7 7800X3D was $627.00 JW computers but now is around $700. Now the sceptic in me thinks Techfast may have not budgeted for price increase or the 7 7800X3D is hard to get.

My question should I take up the offer of upgrading to 7 9800x3d hoping the price point to be similar.
Is the leaked performance gains worth buying a CPU that has not had market assessment and testing.

Just received my build today - everything is in excellent condition. Build was done very professionally, cables are well-managed, and everything was packaged super well.

I am getting poor Bluetooth headphone performance despite sitting right next to the PC. From the looks of it, this is a Gigabyte thing. I had to follow some steps listed in this thread to even get Windows to find my headphones as a pairing option. This isn't the end of the world for me, as I can always just hook up my headphones to my controller and route the audio that way if I am playing on my couch, but it's worth considering. I also downloaded the Gigabyte Control Center software to make sure I updated the correct drivers. I am on ethernet so I had no issues setting up internet access. Here is the guide I used if you run into similar issues:

I think this is for a different board, but the steps helped for me, particularly the network stack option. Windows would just not find any bluetooth devices prior to turning the setting on.

    • did you screw in the wifi antenna? It's also the antenna for bluetooth.

      • I haven’t touched anything on the board. The WI-FI and Bluetooth work, for example I can use an Xbox controller wirelessly with no issues, it’s just too spotty for Bluetooth audio. Prior to turning on the network stack option in the BIOS settings the Bluetooth pairing functionality was just not picking up anything at all.

yeah, but have you plugged in the wifi antenna to the back of the machine?? They're 2x gold circles sitting near your usb ports. They wouldn't have shipped with it plugged in as they'd likely break off. They'll be in the box somewhere, sometimes they're 2x black sticks, other times it's a little wire connected to a small device. They will provide bluetooth stability and it sounds to me like they're not plugged in.

Without them your wifi and bluetooth will work, but they'll have a highly degraded signal, giving you lower network bandwidth and spotty bluetooth connections.

          • @jk82: You are a legend mate, I was a silly goose and thought that they were for boosting wifi signal only. This has made my audio reliable now and I’ve achieved my fully wireless couch setup dream alongside a cheap aliexpress mini keyboard. Thanks so much.

@Bohlin: Woohoo!! Glad it fixed the issue! :)

Couple of other things I'll just point out for you - be aware that you won't be able to use the headphone jack in your controller if using it via bluetooth, consoles can do that, but PC's can't unfortunately. The only way that I've found for that to work is by using the xbox wireless adapter and using an xbox controller - but those adapters are hard to come by these days, unless you buy them in a bundle with a controller for $110. I found one on CEX for $20 though a couple of years back.

              https://www.ebgames.com.au/product/xbox-series-x/269416-xbox…
              https://au.webuy.com/product-detail?id=885370900095

If the controller is wired then it'll work but that kinda defeats the purpose.

Also, be careful with that wifi antenna you've just plugged in if you're moving your PC around. I've accidentally bumped it once and almost killed the wifi! It's a part of the motherboard so if you break it, you'll have no wifi or bluetooth and it'll be a PITA to replace the motherboard!

Another thing you can do, although this takes some googleing and fiddling around, is to bypass your windows log-in screen and set Steam to boot into "big picture mode" on start. That'll pretty much turn it into a steam console if that's something you want to do ;) but yeah, have fun mate. PC can do anything so if there's something you want to do, a quick google and some tinkering and you'll be on your way.

Enjoy the rig mate and have fun!

              • @jk82: Yeah I’m not used to Bluetooth coming from a budget am4 build. I am able to pair both headphones and the controller at the same time, as you said, I was previously using the headphone jack on the wired controller.

It is very surreal - I am playing veilguard at 4k, often getting into the 100s with quality dlss and frame gen while having some selective ultra ray tracing on. DLSS and frame gen is magical to me, and I am unable to discern any image differences when using quality, apart from one or two games that have poor DLSS implementations. Fantastic build, and it destroys emulation too with the 9800X3D chip.

                • +1

                  @Bohlin: Ahh, nice!

Yeah frame gen is awesome! And with DLSS it's all about the version. Veilguard is new so it'll have a fairly recent version but if you're playing an older game (even if it's only 1 or 2 years old) it might have an older version of DLSS.

You can manually update those - it's literally just replacing a .dll file, pretty easy to do - just google it. And with DLSS 3.7 and above I actually use DLSS Performance or Balanced at 4K and am unable to tell the difference - it's looks phenominal! And gives such a big performance boost!

There are tools to do it for you too - DLSS Swapper is a good one.

  • @Buttocks

Hope you're enjoying your build! Slightly green with envy as I "very" patiently wait for mine.

Curious to know what type of RAM (latency and brand) and the brand of the graphics card and PSU you got.

    • Great question, love to know the parts and brands you ended up getting on your build?

    • +1

RAM was Allied 5200ghz. Not sure on the latency as I'm swapping parts over and haven't got it in a state to be able to power it on right now
      GPU was a PNY 4070ti S OC
PSU was an Inwin P85FII non-modular (I paid for the upgrade to 850w)

      • Haven't heard of allied ram and can't find much on it (hoping it looks pretty). I upgraded to 32gb 6000mhz.

What do you think of the power supply? I haven't heard much, tho also don't know much on them. I also got the 850w

        • From previous threads, I think Allied is largely a tech fast brand. The ram is very simple, with a plain black heatsink.
PSU seems fine, but it’s been a long time since I’ve had a non-modular one, so I’ve forgotten just how much extra cabling there is to hide (it’s all hidden, so not really a big issue I guess).

          • @geech: That makes sense why I can't find it anywhere. For some reason I thought the ram may be RGB but aah well.

If it's all hidden its alright I suppose. I don't even remember what PSU I've got in my current computer (it's past the 10 year point).

  • Hi,
Sorry for being quiet…have a lot going on. Have not had a look at components yet…only just started to set it up. I bought mine with the Linux Mint with the view to download windows without product key initially. I have followed Techfast windows download steps/sheet. They say go into the ISO download link. I get error message and wont let me proceed…looked on the net, common error code but could not find remedy. Has anyone loaded windows on there PC? How you do it?

I find linux confusing…never had it before.

    • I was able to but I have Window on a USB which allows me to boot up to the installation wizard.

The easiest way would be to download windows from Microsoft, then use the tool to add it onto a USB drive that you have. Follow the steps below:
      https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

  • Okay Brains trust.
Downloaded "created windows 11 media installation tool" on another PC and saved to usb stick. Booted Gaming PC from usb and went through the steps of installing windows without product key…deleted existing partitions on SSD to unallocated. Everything was going swimmingly until, I think would have been last reboot into the welcome to windows page and set up your user name etc…but that reboot did not happen. PC boots up to Gigabyte landing page then the spinning thing freezes and thats where the current story ends.
I can reboot off the USB and work my way to windows repair page but no joy there. Techfast advises

Assuming that the important drivers like Gigabyte chipset or Nvidia drivers are required for PC to boot
Is it poss to load through the above mentioned widows repair/trouble shooting page there is an option to use a usb device. Do you think I can load the above important drivers this way?
    Anyone have another possible solution?

    • +1

Instead of troubleshooting what driver is causing the problem, it might be quicker and easier to start from scratch.

Disconnect LAN cable if connected, boot from USB and remove the existing partition and reinstall Windows. Don't connect to WLAN in case Windows starts updating / installing drivers automatically.

Download the drivers you listed manually on a different computer, copy to USB and install them on a fresh vanilla install with no updates. Once all the drivers are installed from the manufacturers site, then connect to the internet and update the OS.

      • Mmmm….I have carried out reinstalling windows from usb prior to the above cry for help…BUT I had the LAN cable connected. Oh man at one point I thought that it could be an update issue but in my frustration and calamity in this house my logical brain ceased to work. Thank you for resetting my brain.

      • Did not work…set up stops if no internet connection…reconnected ethernet cable and continued setup, naturally with same result. Rebooted off USB and went back into windows repair and selected wind back windows update but that action was not successful. Back to not progressing past Gigabyte splash screen…system freezes.

        • The time I had issues with windows booting/installing was a BIOS setting for my harddrive. Had to change it to IDE instead of AHCI.

I'm not sure if its a BIOS issue for yourself though.

Usually can hold the F2 button during bootup to access BIOS settings.

It could also be something simple like a loose RAM stick and you might just need to reseat each one to be sure.

Could also try to install windows 10 to double check it's not an issue with the window 11 installation files you've got.

I'm no expert though, I'm a learn from breaking things kind of guy.

Got some bad news today that there's a high chance Techfast won't even have any stock of the 7800x3ds until after Christmas.

          • @Tyoson: Techfast loaded latest BIOS…had good look around in there. By the sounds of it you same as me…self-taught and yes things do get broken 🤣. I feel sad for you possibly not getting your Rig b4 Xmas………as I got mine figured out today and it is friggen awesome. Wooohoooo.

My order got pushed back until probably after Christmas. RIP my december

I received the same email. Kinda devastated, but eh, life goes on and I'll appreciate it more when it does arrive.

This machine is way to much fun…when playing fortnite I hit 440FPS….graphics are wild. And I am trying to keep my enthusiasm down so as not to pizz anyone off. I am a happy boy.

TechFast after sales support was very good. While I figured the Windows 11 issues out myself Caleb from TechFast was very supportive with extensive walk throughs.

If you encounter loading windows 11 issues let me know…I tried everything.
    Woooohooooo

    • Happy for you mate. I'm looking forward to not having to set every single setting to low and still struggling to even hit 60FPS haha.

What was the solution to your Windows 11 issues in the end?

      • +2

TechFast W11 instruction that came with rig was a bust. MS issues. Downloaded media creation tool for W11 onto usb stick using lap top. Insert USB into big boy rig booted into BIOS and changed to boot off USB. That started W11 install. Deleted partions on SSD to unallocated…bye bye Linux. Went through steps verbatim. Could not proceed unless connected to internet which I did eventually. It did very quick update…which I knew wasn't right. Went onto sign into MS account or local page tried both…a bust. Tried heaps of things. When PC restarts froze on Gigabyte splash screen…could not get past it unless reboot. Rebooted again set up asked new install or repair…I went into repair/recovery tried evey thing. In the end choose download W11 from cloud onto USB. Rebooted from USB and set steps just felt better…thought I nailed it. Big boy went through a series of restarts without freezing on splash screen. But froze again…not happy. Found this
        https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLfMCzOKr-A
Rebooted went through W11 installation set up again deleted all previous W11 files on SSD and using the above link method was able to change the need to be connected to the net..whalla…created just a local sign in and I had W11. Then pluged in ethetnet cable, down loaded Gigabyte control center app which updated drivers. Eventually crossed my fingers with Windows update and that worked fine too. So I have unregistered W11 Pro…working fine but in a previous post here there are steps to try using CMD to get registered.
Long story but may be usefull if you run into same issues that I had. P.S.TechFast had the latest BIOS update loaded for the 7 9800X3D.

        • Very nicely done. I'd be up all night until I worked it out, I love and hate problem solving and fault finding haha.

Good to hear Techfast had good aftersales service as well.

          • @Tyoson: Yeh same love/hate problem solving…I hated doing this one because just when I thought I had overcome issue something else became the issue. Took me 2-3 Days of pondering and doing…all with my son offering his thoughts which were not helpfull🤣. Thought posting my experience may help…that or either show how much of a noob I really am.

Have not tried Wi-Fi yet…not really happy with Bluetooth, bit sketchy. Headset and controller connected Bluetooth with headset getting some kind of feedback at times and just hearing weird things and controller drop outs.
Tapped out ATM with problem solving 🙄

            • +1

@Buttocks: Have you plugged in the antenna? This fellow didn't - see comment chain above

              https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15986891/redir

              • @jk82: Haha yes did that. When I first saw the antennas in the bag I did not know what they were…looked like propeller blades.
I am using an unactivated windows11 ATM and thinking as there are settings greyed out maybe there is some fine tunning I can do once activated….I am hopeful.

                • @Buttocks: bugger! …nah, activation doesn't do anything other than allow you to change your wallpaper and remove the watermark. un-activated windows is fully functional - in fact if you don't care about your wallpaper or "personalization" you don't even need to bother activating!

Very happy to hear and very happy for you, enjoy it mate! I'm holding my breath in hopes the chips may come sooner, hopefully a 9800x3d

RE Star Wars outlaws. If you ordered before 12 November and your rig qualified for the free game you must redeem before the 19 December. So if your PC delivery has been delaid you are going to miss out. I suggest emailing Caleb for a solution such as supplying PNY 40xxx serial number alocated for your PC, tax invoice etc.
Check your invoice the Star Wars game bundle is a line item.
    https://promos.pny.com.tw/en/star-wars-outlaws-bundle-pny-rt…

    • Dang. Looks like I miss out on Star Wars and get Indiana Jones instead hahaha.

      • That game looks cool.

      • Probs prefer Indiana as opposed to Star Wars. Would prefer COD over them or ACC haha

  • TF said they have no updates at this stage.

  • I am getting Bluetooth dropouts on controller and a weird noise on headset when also connected by bluetooth, when headset connected via usb noise goes. PC is right next to me and yes have antenna screwed in. I am running windows 11 without license key and therefore not activated with MS… I cant see that this is the issue though. Thoughts people?
