Ryzen 7 9800X3D or 7 7800X3D I Have Been Offered Upgrade on Pending Build

Hi Brains trust. I am waiting for the Techfast 7 7800X3D 4070Ti super PC new build to be built …day 12.

Just received email from Techfast with the offer to hold off completion and wait for the new 7 9800x3D which is said to be released on 7 November. No indication of price differences ATM. On the original Parts Picker 7 7800X3D was $627.00 JW computers but now is around $700. Now the sceptic in me thinks Techfast may have not budgeted for price increase or the 7 7800X3D is hard to get.

My question should I take up the offer of upgrading to 7 9800x3d hoping the price point to be similar.
Is the leaked performance gains worth buying a CPU that has not had market assessment and testing.

with a 4070-class card you're going to be GPU-bound in most games anyway, so even if you paid, (lets assume), an extra $200 for the 9800X3D, you might not notice the difference at all.

edit: looks like the official price is $479 according to leaks, after currency conversion that's around $730 + 10% GST. Which comes out to around $800 AUD.

    • Yea..the 7 9800x3d is reported increase in other functions like rendering and vid editoring.

Okay thanks man for price speculation…I did not find that. To much for me….upgrade later if need too.

  • +1

Stock of the 7800X3D has been drying up, probably because the 9th gen stuff was pretty meh overall and it remained the best gaming chip.

If it's the same price then yeah, why not. If it's a lot more, stick to the 7800X3D. Your rendering and video editing will probably be GPU constrained anyway.

If it's a free upgrade, 100% jump on it

    • Nah it would be a different price point

  • Find out the difference in costs and other parts.

  • +1

Techfast doesn't know the cost difference…I said forget about it and continue with my build in current configuration…soon will be 15 business days since order and build has not started.

  • Now that its out, how much is the upgrade with techfast?

  • 9800x3d already listed yesterday on Ali Express.
    Not cheap…

Will update Techfast offer when known. But my build had come to a grinding halt as they can not source 7 7800X3D CPU, this I anticipated after they started to talk about 7 9800X3D. Not happy that when they received my order 16 business days ago they did not place order on AMD distributor…or have some on shelf before they put deal together. At that time I ordered the 7 7800X3D were still available as evident with online retailers. TechFast did not volunteer situ and finally advise me business day 15 that they can not source…removing any option for me to discuss with Nebula or Gala.

    • I requested an upgrade to the 9800X3D and am still waiting for the updated pricing. Interestingly, it’s still possible to order the 7800X3D from TechFast.

      • +1

Techfast said they will have price tomorrow for 7 9800X3D Australian release date…I will post here when I receive offer.
When did you place your order?

Re; 7 7800X3D they said shipment to arrive at distributors early next week.

        • +1

I placed the order on 21 October. TechFast emailed me on 1 November to ask if I wanted to go ahead with the upgrade. I’m thinking of going with the 9800X3D since I’ve heard it uses a bit more power but runs cooler, which should stop the fan from suddenly revving up. If the price difference isn’t too much, I’ll probably make the switch.

@chanieee: Thanks to both of you. Waiting to hear a bit of a sneak peak into how much more the pre built is with the new processor!

            • +1

@destroyer661: So i got an email and invoice to pay for $80 for the upgrade to 9800x3d for my system which is a great price imo.

              • @skidexa: That is great.

              • @skidexa: wow - I'm jealous. Bought a 7800X3D less than 2 months ago. Didn't expect to see CPU limitation on it, but I do in VR.

  • +1

Got the email and upgrade to 9800x3d is $80 which is a no brainer so I jumped on it!!

    • +1

That’s good price. pretty much sold out everywhere else, and there’s over a $100 difference compared to the 7800x3d.
Still haven’t gotten the email yet. looks like they’re sending them out in batches. Guess I’ll just have to wait for mine to come through.

      • Same here no offer yet…I placed my order on the 16 October would have thought I would be one of the first cabs off the rank.

        • +1

Looks like we're in the same boat lol…
I was also expecting the email this morning.
Honestly, if I knew I'd be waiting this long, I would've just paid an extra $400 and got it from somewhere else.
Oh well, guess we’ll just have to wait it out…

        • I just received the email and the same offer. I have just made the payment, so I hope it will be processed quickly…

      • +1

Hmm I have a feeling that going for the upgrade will delay the shipping if they don't have enough stock to fulfill. Oh wells, it is what it is.

Okay people just received my offer to upgrade to the 7 9800X3D for $80.00 as well, which I also 'jumped on'. Interestingly the offer came from a Jeffery with tittle builder/customer support. First contact with this person uptil now been Caleb and Alex. In his email Jeffery said if I did not upgrade they did not expect 7 7800X3D in stock until end of next week, which Caleb said begining of next week. So basically gun held to my head….albeit I think $80.00 for upgrade is fair as the cheapest I have seen 7 9800X3D online is for $799.00.

Oh and they said they have stock of the 7 9800X3D

When TechFast sent through receipt of my order upgrade the order date was reset to today's date 8 Nov.
I am waiting for reply email to confirm that my order begining date has not been reset and have not lost my position in the build queue. Concerned they are pulling a swifty.
Suggest you look at upgrade receipt email and see if same.

    • What was their reply? Did they put you back to the beginning of the queue?

      • They said they don't know how date change happened and I am reinstated to original date. LOL not sure I am at the begining of the queue though. Business day 21 now…almost a calendar month.

        • FWIW it sounds like I placed an order around the same time (21st Oct) and took the upgrade. Invoice date shows as the 21st. Paid for the upgrade on Monday and they said it would progress to build/ship “later this week” but is yet to progress. So doesn’t necessarily sound like you’ve been placed back at the star of the queue at least.
Would be nice if the order status changed at all, but has been “Order Placed” since the start

          • @geech: I had a DM from another who said he was offered CPU upgrade on Monday and when he acepted on Tuesday TechFast said all the available 7 9800X3D had been alocated.

  • PC Part Picker highlighted a potential issue with compatibility between the 9800x3d and the gigabyte motherboard - "The Gigabyte B650M GAMING PLUS WF Micro ATX AM5 Motherboard supports the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D 4.7 GHz 8-Core Processor with BIOS version F30. If the motherboard is using an older BIOS version, updating the BIOS will be necessary to support the CPU."

I assume this is as simple as updating the BIOS and then everything would be fine.Sorry if its a silly question but I just want to make sure and I'm still learning about this all.

    • +1

Yes I read that as well…techFast tells me they rigorously test PC before dispatch, so fingers cross that they update bios during set up. Not silly question…you have ignited in me that I should ask TechFast if they are updating bios.

      • +1

that board has a bios flashback button which means you can update it with or without a CPU installed - I've used it before and it's very easy. You just download the firmware file from their website, rename it and copy it to a usb stick, plug it in and hold the button. Takes 5 minutes and you're done. I have no doubt Techfast will do this for you!

        • +1

          Good to know thank you.

        • Thank you, good to know. Yeah, I would expect that they would do it but just wanted to be sure. I did get a text today about my order being in build but haven'tt heard anything about the CPU. It did say it would be 5-10 days from now though which doesn't track from their original message of 5-10 from order to delivery.

          • +1

@RossRoss: What date did you place your original order. My text message copied below never mention time frame which is a concern….maybe duno.
LOL i gave up on any time frame TechFast said…I placed order October 16 which is now 21 business days and as it is late in the day,…22 business days if you read it tomorrow (Friday).

I would not mind so much if they just tell the correct waiting time…because suff happens. 5 to 10 days is a wish they state out of fear they will loose a sale. Personally being honest is the best way to manage a customer's expectation and keep one's integrity.

            • @Buttocks: I put my order in on 7/11. haha yeah, doesn't seem like I have a hope of getting it any time soon but I'm happy to be pleasantly surprised, looking forward to being offered an upgrade though. I also asked to find out what parts they are using for my build as I understand they have different options when it comes time to build, depending on stock.

I completely agree, I would just like to be able to manage my expectations!

              • +1

@RossRoss: You should get it for Christmas LOL. Apparently they have allocated all their
7 9800X3D so I have been told. Ask them for upgrade as AMD resources are focusing on the new CPU and TechFast may not get the promised delivery of 7 7800X3D.

    Just received this text message.
'You beauty – your PC in order TFxxxxxxxxxx is now In Build! It will be picked, professionally assembled moving onto system installation, stress testing, final QC, packing, and shipping. No further changes can be made to your order at this point. We'll ping you again when its status changes to In Testing. Get hype! - The TechFast team'

    Anyone else get same message

    • Haven't received this uet. Im expecting this to take weeks though :/

  • Nebula just posted a pretty similar deal at $2648 with $150 gift card back. Should've jumped on this while I could - tried to buy a few days ago but oos!

    • +1

Yes saw that. Similar and more expensive than TechFast even after I upraded the ram and cooling and CPU. They also state silver PSU but in parts picker list gold. I would jump on it quickly if thats what you want as the 7 9800X3D and 7 7800X3D reported in short suppy. Surely Nebula would be quicker.

      • I'll wait to see what techfast offer, if they do, for the 9800x3d. No rush. I've struggled with a GTX 970 for this long 😁 seems techfast usually have better prices with slightly lower spec components but I noticed nebula have been offering a pretty similar tier of components too lately.

        • +1

I had a look at Nebula too and yeah, they do charge a bit more for upgrades, but Techfast tends to be a bit cheaper for the similar specs. That said, you’re gonna be waiting over a month with Techfast, so I’d personally go with Nebula. Haven’t heard a peep from Techfast myself either. If I knew the wait would be this long, I probably would've just forked out a bit more and bought the parts separately and built it myself 😅

          • @chanieee: Yeah I'm really considering seeing if there's a few good BF deals and buying some components then. Not gonna get much discount on the CPU/GPU but might be lucky with the other parts.

          • @chanieee: I priced building PC and through parts picker I could not come close to the TechFast price. But would have been quicker 😆

      • Same here, after upgrading case, psu, ram, cooler (Nebula only has a single 240mm aio which is much more expensive). I would prefer the game and the $150 gift card from nebula though - but still works out to be at least $400 more expensive.

But as Buttocks said, you probably will get it faster and you will get better support and responsiveness (TechFast were decent but my latest emails haven'tt been answered for a.few days) Im just hoping I never have to worry about support.

        • I figure the don't reply when they can not answer your question…what I did was resend unanswered email/s and ask for them to respond to below email. Inevitably they will say sorry for not seeing your email.
I have this mental picture of a pimple faced kid chained in front of a conveyor belt building PC's with a long line of PC cases and parts waiting their assembly turn. I think his name is Jeffrey.
And for the sake of Jeffrey I have not jumped up and down in frustration.

          • @Buttocks: Thanks, I actually did exactly as you said yesterday and hoping for an update today at least.

hahahaha now I'm picturing exactly that. Ahh poor Jeffrey!

Have you bought from TechFast before?

            • @RossRoss: LOL Lord no…this is the first custom PC I have built for some time. I have not read anything on Ozbargain on their after sales support which I can not foresee to be anymore responsive.
And I think the reason Caleb misses some emails is because he is frantically running around looking for components and making sandwiches for Jeffrey.

              • @Buttocks: Fair enough, yep, agreed. Hopefully, no after-sales support is needed.

LOL must be some decent sandwiches

    Jeffrey has been busy

Your PC has been built and is now in Testing. This is where components are tested under real-world load to ensure they're good to go. Once it passes, it will move to packing and dispatch. Your next notification will be when it ships! - The TechFast team <NO REPLY>

22 business days…1 day short of calender month. So if it ships hopefully on Monday people expect over a month to shipping plus 5 business days for delivery.

    • Cheers for the updates.

    • I tried asking Jeffrey for an update on my PC build status as well, but no luck so far, haha.

Since you ordered on the 16th and it’s just now in assembly, I ordered on the 21st, so I’m guessing mine will be built next week and shipped the week after.

Hopefully, it arrives before Christmas… that’ll be a relief. Thanks for sharing your update!!
