Dining Table - Domayne or Other Recommendations

Hey All,

In the market for a dining table for our new house, and came across this over the weekend that looked really good.
https://www.domayne.com.au/saxon-240cm-dining-table-in-ash.h…

I know furniture can be negotiated at HN, but what about Made to Order stuff? Anyone had any experience with negotiating on those? Just want an idea in mind before I go in store again.

Also, does anyone have any recommendations on hardwood timber dining table in a similar style? Curved legs rounded table. Happy to explore other alternatives than HN as well.

Thanks!

Looks cool but incredibly uncomfortable, have you actually sat down at it and dealt with bashing your feet into it when sitting at the ends?

Negotiations probably depend on what you're buying, I doubt you'd get much of a discount on just the table alone but it's always worth a shot.

    • have you actually sat down at it

      Doesn't include chairs…

Freefall is talking about the bulky table legs. Very valid point.

At that size, it's should be called walls rather than legs.

    • haha it is just two of us at the moment, the wife is quite fond of this design

      • Yeah, I agree on the design, it looks fantastic.

I have an ugly, old, beaten table that I've been meaning to replace for years, but any time I sit down at a new one I hate it for some reason. Plus a tablecloth covers a multitude of sins. I think I'm traumatised by my inlaws dining table though, somehow both big enough for 8 people yet so poorly designed that any more than 4 results in legs splayed everywhere, cramped positions and lots of banging of knees on wood.

  • Have a look at OzDesign. Their Monaco looks somewhat similar.

  • Bought a dining table recently and pretty sure I saw similar style at multiple places. I think if you went to any home maker centre and walked through furniture stores you'd find very similar options
    Eg

    https://ozdesignfurniture.com.au/monaco-collection/?variant=…

Up to you to work out if a particular wood or exact look is worth the 'domayne' $ surcharge

    • Similar style but the quality of the solid tabletop (of the Domayne) is much higher quality than the ones you linked (veneer and teak).

      • Random links illustrating the style is not unique

I would expect the domayne one being 3* the price to be higher quality, just pointing out the op should be able to randomly walk around furniture stores to find similar styles and then select the price v quality they happy with.

  • I would check out a few op shops to see what is available first.

A reasonable quality solid wood dining table (that is looked after) will last forever (my parents are still using their teak table that is at least 45 years old), so its worth spending a little more and going for solid wood rather than veneer but…remember it will last forever so dont go for the latest fashion or something that you are a bit unsure about. A classic 4 post table is a safer bet in my view, but its your aesthetics so whatever suits you. If you are the type to change your mind in 5 or 10 years, then you can go cheaper veneer and move on in 10 years.

I do recommend an 8 seater if you can fit it into your house, even if you will usually only use 3 or 4 seats. Chairs can be quite expensive though; so nothing wrong with 6 matching chairs and then a couple of cheaper / off facebook chairs you bring out when you have extra guests.

For those $$$ you can find a specialist hardwood furniture shop that has other options - wont be cheaper but might be better quality. However depends on what you are after

As to negotiation - sure, just ask. If they say no then they say no. You miss 100% of the discounts you dont ask for

    • I agree. The one the OP linked is 240cm but may be not fit 8 people comfortably due to the legs/stands.

We had a 240cm and while you could fit 8 (+ 2 at the end) it was a bit squashy.

I ended up getting a custom made 270cm Vic Ash/Tas Oak table which fits 8 (+ 2 at the end) comfortably. I made the table extra deep at 110cm. Was about the same price to get it custom made than at a furniture store.

      • Can you share where you got your custom table from? Thanks

        • I'll try to find the details.

It was a guy from Facebook who does it has a hobby.

        • If you are in NSW then Uneke furniture does great stuff. It’s not super cheap (or cheap in any way!) but worth a look.
