Do People Really Like Snoop Dog?

What is the appeal of Snoop Dog?

Do people actually like him or is he just astroturfed by industry figures? I’ve seen him cameo in various media properties which I enjoy (e.g. Trailer Park Boys, Monk, Olympics) but I never really enjoyed what he brings to it. I’m not suggesting that he’s particularly grating or ruins it, just wondering if people really like him or it’s just one of those things everybody thinks they should like or they think it makes them “cool”.

Thoughts?

He's marketed himself as an American icon by showing up everywhere. That's it. Makes no difference to the rest of us.

  • I like snoopy and i like dog.

He has spent his life fostering an image of a cool vibe and it's paying off, he's as mainstream as celebrities come today. And he didn't even really need to change anything, he can still openly use heroic amounts of weed daily, I'm sure he had fun at the Olympics even if he wasn't being paid 7 million dollars per day or whatever. And I bet for a black man his age it must feel nice to be a mainstream celebrity. The world was pretty racist when was a kid. Still is.

Also if you weren't a kid or teen in the 90s then you might not know just how big he was, you might not have heard for yourself how catchy his music was, how cool the vibe was when playing it at a party.

      Yep.
As a survivor of the 90s rap scene where rappers came and gone in a flash or were jailed/killed he somehow made it out alive and became mainstream beyond his music. Even though he doesn't do anything 😂
But respect to him for being alive, having fun and instantly recognisable. His peers that are still around are invisible (eg Kurupt, Daz etc) to the general populace.

"There's that guy who hasn't heard of the mainstream things us boring normies know about!"

      "OMG, he's so cool"

    Nope, never was my thing.

More Beastie Boys, Run DMC, NWA, Eminem etc.

Each of those has a lot more talent. But Snoop has a curated sense of cool that transcends music audiences. I doubt more than 50% of people who recognise him could name one of his songs.

  • Dude used to rap over pron vids. That's pretty funny if anything.

    No

  • Liked a few of his tracks off his Doggy Style album. Obviously back in the early 90s when it was new. Seems very much a hasbeen nowadays

    Fo shizzle my nizzle!

Snoops is an icon who transcends boundaries. I admire how he has been able to reinvent himself to stay relevant. Some of his collaborations with other artists are dope.

    • This ^ And some of his acting roles like huggy bear were cool

  • He had a brilliant debut album in the early 1990s (Doggy-style). He's mostly been coasting off that album ever since. Even though he's had the occasional hit since then (his Rhythm & Gangsta album with Pharrell Williams was good), he hasn't been able to reach the same consistency and cultural significance as his debut. As for his looks, he's turned into somewhat of a caricature, but that's not such a bad thing.
