The Minimum RAM on a MacBook Air Is Now 16GB Instead of 8GB

I don't know how to feel

Nothing seems to make sense anymore

RIP 8GB Macbooks. I'll miss the OzB comments

Oh they will still be there. Just substitute 8 for 16, and 16 for 32.

I remember when we substituted 4 for 8. Those were the days.

    • Apple Intelligence means that 16GB isn't enough /s

Finally. In my experience 8GB was enough for most people, now there is more than enough for post people. I have 32GB but I wish I sprung for 64GB, it's nice to leave memory intensive apps open like AfterEffects.

Look forward to the next thing - SSD size will likely be next.

    • They just did that relatively recently, but yeah it should be the next minimum upgrade. If you ignore the core count which always goes up.

  • About time

  • Price didn't go up, so it's something for nothing. Macbook Air max is still 24GB though.

  • I had a work colleague ask me why I don't buy a Mac instead of PC, well for starters I would hate to think how much it would cost to replace my current configuration that has 64GB of RAM and 32TB of storage.

32TB and not a network storage? lol who you fooling

1TB OS drive. 1TB for programs and AI stuff, 8TB Media drive (movies, TV, music),12TB Games drive, 10TB rando shit drive. The 3 big ones are not full.

The 8TB is a WD Gold Datacentre drive, The 12TB is a Ultrastar DC HC520, and the 10TB is a Exos 7E10 Enterprise. I could use a NAS, but then I would need to buy identical drives, and these were all bargains I've found. The cost would be huge. And the chances of any of those drives failing are very f-ing low. So I run the gauntlet.

But sure why not, keep saying I'm a liar when you don't know crap about my setup.

Why don’t you ask your AI if you need identical drives for a NAS?

And the chances of any of those drives failing are very f-ing low

You’re using NAS drives for a PC, so I think you don’t even know about your own setup.

You forgot to add LTT merch to your setup list.

          • @askbargain: I know how a NAS works thankyou. But running RAID with different size drives isn't smart. Also The games drive would stay in the PC. So only the 8TB and 10TB drives even have stuff I would back up.

Those drives are well above standard NAS drives. So please tell me why you think I don't even know my own setup, hmmm?

            • -1

@AdosHouse: You don’t need RAID for a NAS so keep doing your research.

How many of the 8TB games do you even touch?

              • @askbargain: Haha, not many. I just have the games.

But what benefit is there for running a NAS instead of running my HDDs locally? A NAS is just another thing I can to buy. For backups that's smart. But just to have HDDs outside the PC, why?

    • Weird question from a co-worker. Are you using your PC for work purposes?

      • +1

We all have work iPhones, but none of the desktops are Apple. And it came up in just normal conversation. I was explaining my PC, and he was saying he uses his Mac, and how it's better some how.

        • Weird one. There's nothing worse than people pushing tech on you without understanding your needs.

          • @ihfree: I mean, look, if it works well for him, power to him. He's not a techie guy, and he just wants something that works out of the box, cool. He wouldn't understand doing anything deeper than browser/office stuff anyway so I just let him have his piece. He got something that suits him, I got something that suits me.

I mean sure, I will never trust Apple, but that goes back WAY before the Mac, or even the iPhone, but I won't judge anyone that uses their stuff because it just works out of the box.

        • Oh well I guess we'll accept your raw-numbers of RAM/Storage and just have to accept that you know what's best, seeing as those are the only numbers that matter.

          • @ThithLord: Mate my initial comment was a dig at how much Apple charges for upgrades from base configuration, which are frankly appalling. I never said I know best. But if I was going to say what's better about PC over Apple I'd probably go, initial cost, ability to upgrade, cost to upgrade, ease of expansion, industry standard parts and connections, lifetime of hardware and software.

But feel free to keep being butthurt.

            • @AdosHouse: It's the PC masterrace that are always butthurt about Apple configurations, mate.

  • Only 16gb? Why not 32gb

    • Sure you can have 32GB, just pay obscene prices for it.

      • You just, quite simply, do not understand Apple's value propositions.

Apple offers a specific value proposition, and if it’s perceived as good, people will buy their products.

If Apple maintains this value proposition for over twenty years, resulting in a growing customer base and increasing profits, it indicates that their value is indeed good.

While customers may not be 100% satisfied and will always seek better value, Apple’s tiered system of base, middle, and premium products seems to work well, with their base products being sufficiently good.

If customers perceive poor value, making a fuss doesn’t change much. What makes a difference is not buying the product, returning it, or causing a surge in support calls. Complaining in forums is largely ineffective.

This is why the iPhone mini, the original HomePod, and the butterfly keyboard were discontinued.

        Only 32gb? Why not 64

        • Rookie numbers. Quad 64GB sticks of ECC.
