Reputable Place to Sell/Trade in Phone?

Long story short…
Jumped from iPhone to Android for a Pixel Fold 9.
It's not as great as I thought it would be and considering swapping back.

Understanding I'll be at a loss but besides direct trade in with JBHIFI - what other options have people used and can recommend?

Prefer to avoid selling on places like FB Marketplace due to scams.

Thanks

there's no issues selling the phone on FB as long as you exchange in a public place (like some police stations have a dedicated area for this) and only accept cash. But depending on where you bought iphone from (eg; Apple Store directly), there may be a return you could do (apple have a 14 day return policy)

Prefer to avoid selling on places like FB Marketplace due to scams.

Just don't accept PayID and only allow Cash for Payment.

I prefer PayID over cash, especially for a transaction of this value

So do I. I don't want issues with counterfeit bills nor having to go and deposit cash at a branch that is rarely open and getting further away.

        • Never seen counterfeit bill haha. payID ok.

Maybe use PayPal or eBay if you're paranoid, or the other shops that buy phones.

Counterfeit Bills? Honestly, never had an issue.

Plus, depositing the cash? Just got and spend it rather than paying via Card.

      • Okay…. well that is your call. Don't end up like this guy

        • Why woulds i let someone take something before I had the money, cleared, in my account? Some people really deserve to be scammed.

          • @Bruceflix: Not sure if you've used payID or osko before but it's instant. Otherwise yes you wait till the money has hit your account, makes sense đź‘Ť.

Selling on FB or Gumtree and accepting PayID or normal bank transfers is perfectly fine.

The issue is only with Commonwealth Bank electronic payments!

CommBank holds payments to new recipients for 24 hours, thus giving the person plenty of time to cancel the payment coming from CommBank. This is where scammers take advantage of this payment "loophole".

As far as i know this 24 hour delay does not apply to the other banks.

The bottom line is not to release the goods until you see the funds arrive into your account.

This applies with any electronic payments as not all banks or bank accounts are on the Fast Payments System

    • Electronic payments carry some risk, they are not perfectly safe.

If the buyer is actually using someone else’s compromised or stolen account, there is a chance the funds will be recovered from the seller’s account.

You can trade it in to places like Mobile Monster who are fairly reputable. But you won't get anything near what you will get on a private sale. As long as you accept cash only and don't meet at your house (and also take precautions against getting mugged), you should be fine.

    • Actually maybe I’m wrong. Just checked Gumtree and the going rate for the phone I traded a month ago is only $100 more than Mobile Monster gave me.

      • We found Mobile Monster to be pretty good. The only issue is they might try to stiff you on condition. They have a drop off point in Melbourne and I handed the phone to the lady at the desk and she said it was really good condition. We got the condition report back and it said a few dints. When we asked for pictures showing the damage they said that since the women at the counter set up our expectations they would honour it. Take lots of photos of your phone before handing it in.

Our phone had been in a case since first purchased and it had a screen protector. I didn’t see any dints before handing it in,

        • May give Rebeelo a go, same quote as Mobile monster.
Battery at least 85% concerns me with MM. Abattery app says 'good'.

I'm not sure if there is any point in keeping my P8 since these new deals on plans aren't conducive to trade ins anymore (or can't use as well as).

          As New Condition
          - No signs of wear (as new condition)
          - No scratches or markings
          - Must have a battery health level of a least 85%
          - Must have the complete box and manual

          Easy to google package contents

Always worth trying Cashies or any other secondhand store.

    • Always worth trying Cashies

      Peanuts are cheaper.

      • They already have iPhone 16 so there are always people prepared to trade with them

A mob with decent reputation here like mobile monster, or use it as trade in through Apple or Samsung.

I’d rather not get scammed via market place (mugged, counterfeit money, fake or stolen account transfer etc)

    • Another +1 for Mobile Monster. I think I've sold 3 phones so far.
      Customer support is also good.

I sold an iphone on Rebeelo a few months ago. The process is managed by Mobile Monster. I got better price from them than any of the two-three offers I ever got via gumtree. No hassle process, I got the payout that was advertised on their website. After this experience I doubt I will ever again bother selling via gumtree or the likes. Just too many tyrekickers and a huge waste of time, especially when you negotiated a price with someone and they don't turn up for the sale.

  • Worth checking out https://au.webuy.com/ if you have a store near you.

  • I recently sold my phone through Mobile Monster. They were fine, even sent out a reply paid satchel. Bear in mind if you mark your phone with condition “as new”, they will want EVERYTHING that came in the box right down to the SIM pin, and if you don’t have any piece of it, it’s automatically graded down.

    Good luck :)

  • Is it normal to not get an email from Reebelo straight away, still haven't got one. The website was a bit glitchy but have a Buyback Order #, so should be right to send it in? Maybe they are slow at replying.

  • Just sold my pixel pro 9 through webuyback. It was my first time selling to them and the experience was great. I got the same price as I would have realistically sold on FB. Just "lost" a bit from paying for postal insurance but that's optional.
