“ The Ballet Boys Project
Free ballet classes for boys aged 11 - 14
Queensland Ballet is taking the global decline of boys in ballet and dance very seriously and is committed to changing this downward trend and addressing what is potentially a sustainability issue for our artform.  As such, we are encouraging the dance and broader community to join this movement with us to ensure the tradition of ballet – although ever evolving, lives on with strong participation from male dancers.

As the first part of The Ballet Boys Project, we are thrilled to offer free weekly classes to boys aged 11 – 14, commencing on Monday 8 July 2024 at the homes of Queensland Ballet (West End) and Queensland Ballet Academy (Kelvin Grove).

This initiative aims to remove barriers for boys wanting to take ballet classes by offering these boys-only classes at no cost, with no uniform requirements, and no audition required.

This is a unique opportunity to bring together boys who are enjoying ballet in the community sector, sometimes as the only boy in their class.
Students will enjoy the following benefits:
forging friendships with other boys who dance
focusing on male-specific ballet technique
classes and mentoring by leading professional male teachers
building a support network of likeminded peers
dancing in purpose-built, professional dance studios
enjoying a safe and encouraging environment
being inspired by witnessing older boys and men pursuing their love of ballet in our facilities”

UPDATE this blew up in a way I really didn’t expect. I was thinking it would help 1 or 2 families in Bris with boys that might be interested in dance. I would still suggest getting in contact with Queensland Ballet if you think it might suit your son. Given it’s coming towards the end of the year it might be worth asking if they are running it again next year.

Surprised this deal makes the front page.

How many actually benefit from the deal with these reuquirements?

    1. Need to be from qld
    2. Need to have boys aged 11-14
    3. Those boys need to have done ballet in the past but not currently

I didn’t think it would make the front page either. I thought it was a fairly niche deal but wanted to share as it would be really cool if it suited those particular kids. I share any good deal I find. I know how expensive kid’s activities and sports are too, so was trying to be helpful not start whatever has happened in this comment section.

In a state that just voted in a government that is promising “adult time for adult crime” for exactly this age group, mainly boys, some of the backlash on here is bizarre. Physical activity, creative pursuits and involvement in meaningful activities is so good for people of all ages and genders, but particularly this age group. If this deal isn’t useful to you move along. Queensland Ballet also has other great programs with a fee like kids and seniors dance as well as specific programs for people with Parkinson’s Disease or Brain Injury. I just wish there was more outside of Brisbane. They also have free online video classes which are quite good.

This thread reminds me of being in primary school.

  • I went to a school, that was one of the toughest in NSW. We had rejected kids from all over NSW, at a local foster outlet (which is now a prison).

In our year 1 guy did music. I saw him beaten up every day. Imagine doing ballet.

Yeah, it would be awful - worse than Billy Elliot type scenarios I’d imagine. I’m glad things are shifting, somewhat. What dance and music do for the brain and mind are incredible. Kids who have been through trauma and neglect need it more than most , but it’s good for everyone.

      • I never did music at school for this reason. I would have been far more gifted if i had lessons.

  • I dont really understand why there is now a big shortage of young males when nowadays there is so many of them claiming gender fluidity etc, so any previous stigma should be much less. Interesting that they are saying they will be teaching around the design for males, maybe the classes are traditionally designed for girls who have a completely different flexibility so becomes hard for the male especially as they get older.
