Proactive Action - Xiaomi (& Other Chinese Brands / Import) Phone Owners Affected by 3G Shutdown (Now Due to Be Network Blocked)

UPDATE 1/11/24 - Response from grey import seller after I contacted them regarding a Redmi Note 12 that is no longer working. (Of course I know it is not their fault, but this is a good way to get more pressure on Xiaomi to do an update, and to put pressure on the government to whitelist"
"We have investigate the issue comprehensively and follow up instantly with distributor and ask them to push Xiaomi to resolve the issue. After our best endeavor, as of 31 OCT, Xiaomi confirm that their device is actually capable of emergency calls over 4G or 5G. This is an compatible device. However, the disconnection results from new ACMA regulations effective October 28, 2024, requiring carriers to restrict devices that can’t support 000 emergency calls over 4G or 5G from accessing their networks. It is out of our control. It is a government, manufacturer and network provider level. They recklessly blocking usable phone regardless of compatibility. They block for most phones that not purchase from them or from their partners and force you to buy a new one from them.
Meanwhile, we are pushing our distributor to communicate with manufacturer for updating the list and there are news that a firmware update will soon launch from Xiaomi."

UPDATE 30/10/24 - Please also email
[email protected] as we now have some traction

  • After multiple emails I finally got a NON-standard response! Hope is on the horizon! If this ends up working, you all can shout me a beer (or preferably a non-alcoholic and refreshing beverage)!

"Hello, Greetings from Xiaomi Customer Support! This is Eric.
Thank you for your feedback. We have noticed this situation, and concerned team are working on it. Please wait for the system update.
We would like to know if your device is only unable to use the emergency call function normally, but is able to use other functions normally, or if it has no signal/service at all. Once we have your feedback, we will get back to you with proper handling.
Best Regards
Xiaomi Global Email Service"

SUMMARY

  • Certain 4G and 5G phones currently working on VoLTE may be actively blocked through a government directive after 28th October
  • These are usually grey import phones that revert to 3G for 000 emergency calls
  • There are a lot of people ignoring the annoying text and voice messages on their phones, thinking "My phone IS 4G/5G, I am not affected"
  • Come October 28, there is going to be a tsunami of shock and anger

Oct 24 last minute legislation to block 4G and 5G phones that revert to 3G for 000 calls
https://www.legislation.gov.au/F2024L01353/asmade/downloads

Banana3's Summary (READ THIS FIRST to understand what the issue actually IS, instead of spouting "3G shutdown has been announced for years…")
"Again, the issue is not whether 3G should be shut down or not. I think most people in this discussion agree that it needs to be shut down. The issue is that a few years ago the communication was: as long as your phone supports 4g, then you should be fine. Then earlier this year: No, 4g alone is not going to cut it, you need to have a phone that supports VoLTE. Then: Wait, actually, not just any VoLTE, only those that the network allows your phone to use (yes, Vodafone told me that when my perfectly working VoLTE phone stopped working after they shut down 3g). Then on the last minute: Oh wait, actually, not just that, your phone also needs to be able to call 000 on 4g by default. None of these have been properly planned, or thought of, or mitigated. It's all just a big mess. If anyone is confused, it's not their fault."

Generic response. If you follow up, they will eventually say that they have no idea and just tell you to wait.

  • +2

I changed to a old phone, not baned, but still need to listen 20s voice warning message before every call including emergency call.
I called tpg to stop msg, they want new phone imei, I say don't know how to find, if they don't stop msg, I will call Gov give them heavy penalty!

  • Vodafone does not seem to be that rough on blocking, compared to Optus and Telstra.
Hence, many are preferring to jump ship, hoping their Xiaomi phones will still work with Vodafone/MVNOs. But this ain't true if the Telcos are supposed to follow the legislation universally.

Unfortunately, there's no one to guide telling such people that moving to Vodafone is not really the solution.

    • +1

IIRC telcos will eventually merge the blocklist so it might not be a permanent solution to go with Voda

      • +1

I'm not sure if they'll do that, a lot of people will be unhappy if their working phone on Vodafone gets blocked months after the supposed blocking day. Unsure though.

        • +2

A lot of people are already unhappy, but that didn't stop them.

Further update… So after moving to Kogan / Vodafone as they already had shut down 3g and my poco x3 pro worked fine… Then they block it but I have thrown a Woolworths/Telstra SIM in again and they work perfectly and not blocked. Is there any real standard that they are following for all?

    • Vodafone blocked you? that's interesting. They have been good with Xiaomi phones with most reporting that Vodafone is working fine for them. Working fine for me as well currently with Vodafone and Telstra. When did Vodafone block you?

      • 29th Oct. Its Kogan but that is on the vodafone network. Have tried putting the sim back in at later dates in case they have changed it. Its working on same network for Poco X3 NFC but not 2 pro versions i have.

        • Your pro's were on optus block list before ?

It's just one enormous flustercuck isn't it? It makes me wonder how many brown envelopes have changed hands.

Purchased the TCL 30 5G (TCL T776h) in September which now has been blacklisted on Boost using their Sim because of the 3g shutdown.
Reached out to TCL support and received the following reply stating that only principal operators> like Telstra/Optus/Vodafone Sims work with VoLTE

    Is this BullSh*t ???

So how come my Aldi Sim works in my Moto G85 ?

"Hope you’re doing well just to let you know that your phone is Not Compatible,
Due to 3G shut down third party sim card will not be compatible in some TCL mobile phone Model
Need to change sim card that compatible with your phone.
at the moment only principal operators> like Telstra/Optus/Vodafone Sims work with VoLTE.

    Thanks,

    • +1

That is an crap response. You should take TCL to ACCC. It is their responsibility to ensure that the device they sell in Australia will work to its fullest capability. VOLTE and shit is none of our worries. The onus is on them to ensure that their phones would work in Australia. How they manage that is none of consumer's concern.

      • Yes thats what I thought

        • +1

I think it's a breach of Aus Consumer Law because it's not fit for purpose & you weren't warned before buying there were any restrictions on which network service provider you could use.

FYI - The store you purchased it from has to deal with any warranty claim, they can't brush you off to TCL.

          • +1

@WatchNerd: Thanks for you response, have been trying to sort this out with Boost, Telstra & TCL before tackling a well known "Mobile in the Citi" Retailer in Sydney which is still selling the same phone at present.
Was trying to get my ducks to line up first.
            :)

            • +2

@chrisie: You should go back to that store and demand refund. They can take it up to TCL if they wanted.

  • Haha just got an email from Optus saying they are going to shut down this phone even though that was a temporary sim i used in it 4 months back to see if i could do VOIP and WIFI calling.

  • It's almost 2 weeks now since Telstra blocked all my Xiaomi handsets, but two Redmi 9 can still do VoWiFi though, and one Mi Note 3 hasn't been blocked "yet". I got another Mi Note 3 mobile which got blocked on the 28th.
If they are blocking based on TAC/IMEI then why those 3 handsets were not totally blocked?
Moreover, I got a Vivo IQOO 5G Pro, it got blocked for call but not for Data and SMS !!

    • "I got a Vivo IQOO 5G Pro, it got blocked for call but not for Data and SMS "
As 3g still has not been disabled you are receiving data and sms on 3g.

    • If they are blocking based on TAC/IMEI then why those 3 handsets were not totally blocked?

Because VoWiFi authentication is handled differently to LTE

All the current edge cases - still working VoWiFi, working on carrier X but not carriers Y/Z - will be cleaned up by the end of this month

I got the same response as @Tuukmaak from Xiaomi "….We have noticed this situation, and concerned team are working on it. Please wait for the system update…." I have a Mi9T and a Mi9SE both blocked on aldimobile since 31/10. Prior to shutdown aldi advised Mi9SE would be fine and Mi9T would not, but then blocked both. I tried the Mi9T on amaysim (Optus) with no success, then got it working on Lebara(vodafone). 2 days later I got the message from Lebara 'phone will be blocked within 28 days' due to 000 issue. I've complained to AMTA but they are just saying Xiaomi needs to fix the issue with 000 calling. I've noticed that https://www.telstrawholesale.com.au/3G-Network-Closure-Block… says the Mi9T is fine, and I notice @HolyFosh says their Mi9T is working on telstra, but I'm reluctant to buy yet another sim card in case Telstra start blocking it. I'm going back to AMTA to complain again that Mi9T is blocked by aldi but not telstra, even though both use telstra network. How are we supposed to make sense of this, and buying a new phone looks risky too in case it stops working. I saw an ABC story that JB hifi still selling blocked phones! Also going to email my MP to see if they can start to ask questions.

    • +2

Good job mate keep the pressure up. I am also going to write to AMTA and my MP.

  • I have a Redmi Note 8 which was working perfectly on Optus (Circles.life Android 11) On 06/10/2024 I powered it off in the night, the next day powered it on and it just got cut off. As I have two of them the other one kept working with VOLTE and WiFi perfectly and speeds were up to 130 mb. I tried many sims with no succes. So on 08/10/2024 I decided to put the sim in the second slot of the Second Phone then switched it on it got cut off too ( Both by Rebooting ) The best part of the stoy is I still can make emergency calls to 000 and have a record of it on 08/10/24 9.11pm. (MIUI 12.5.2)
Today is the 11th and my screen shows Imergency Calls Only.
Any one with a similer experiance comment please

    • 3g has not been disabled as yet for 000 so you should be able to make 000 calls but not phone calls as you phone has been blacklisted

      • +1

I have two and its only One that the 000 calls work on. The other one is not mine but compleatly dead

  • +7

Gday all - only discovered this forum about an hour ago, so I have not had the chance to read everything.

I have a Redmi Note 9S which I know works on VoLTE but as it is now blocked, have no way to definitely find out if it works for E000. I installed custom firmware in the hope that it would get me around the block, but I didn't know that blocks would happen based only on IMEI (eg. if your number starts with 86 - China - your screwed mate). Anyway, I was grumpy this arvo and wrote a letter to the Minister, some of which reads:

    Dear Minister
Alleged systematic breach of the Telecommunications Act by OPTUS (and potentially other carriers)

    In Brief:
It is my belief that OPTUS is systematically breaching the requirements of the Telecommunications (Emergency Call Service) Amendment Determination 2024 (No. 1), a determination which you directed to recently be made.

That Legislative Instrument requires (in several places) that “… The carriage service provider must identify whether the mobile phone of the end-user is configured to be able to access the emergency call service…” …

It is my understanding that systematically OPTUS does not identify whether the mobile phone of the end-user is configured to be able to access the emergency call service. What they do is check the phone make and model (via the IMEI number) of the end-user’s phone against a ‘compatibility list’ that they (or perhaps other carriers) have made and maintain.

I am not a lawyer, but this seems to me to be a clear breach of the Legislative intent – which is to determine if the phone that the user possesses can access the emergency services. The intent is not just to ‘check’ if the end-user happens to be using a phone of a like make and model that the carrier has previously determined can, or cannot, access the emergency services. I (and the carriers themselves) note that individuals can quite freely alter a devices firmware/software/hardware - ie. A person can ‘modify’ a device they own.

I humbly request that the Minister takes all actions as necessary to investigate this alleged breach (including carriers other than OPTUS), and take action as appropriate to ensure that all carriers comply with what is written in Legislative Instrument. If it is such impossible or impractical for the carriers to comply with the Legislative Instrument, then it would seem a duty of the Minister to require that suitable amendments are made to that Legislative Instrument. …

I went on for another 4 pages in the letter basically asking for her to say that the carriers do use Compatibility lists etc, and they are not doing what the book of rules says they should be doing.

I read here that a lot of people say that if the carrier does not know if the device can definitely call E000 that they block it, which is not what the rook of rules says they should do.

Something that I have not seen written about anywhere is s.69 of the ECS determination which basically says that the carriers (in respect to certain customers) should i) Notify the customer that their phone is not operating in accordance with the ECS Determination, ii) Provide that customer with information on how/where they can obtain a phone which does comply with the ECS Determination, and iii) unblock that customers phone for between 28 and 35 days (so they can find a new phone etc) … I think that my provider should be giving me that allowance, but they haven't done so.

    • +2

It definitely is a breach. Telecom providers seem to not give a shit about the government legislation and our government is too weak to take these telecom companies to task or maybe they do not want to hurt their political donors but anyways government is sitting there with their eyes closed not wanting to do anything with this fiasco unfolding within their plan sight. I have also written a letter to the minister but haven't received any proper response yet. The only reply that I got was that it has been forwarded to the ministers office.

    • Awesome i cut paste changed for my circumstances and submitted as well. Thanks!

  • Just remember guys, don't vote for this incompetent Labor government in the next election. They cannot get anything right.

    • Who do you propose people vote for?

We need to get Greens to power. They seem to be the only party that actually cares about the common man and voices concerns of people like us but unfortunately most of the people are going to vote either Labor or Liberal and for sure Labor is way lesser of an evil than Liberal.

I had 5 different Xiaomi handsets blocked by Telstra on the 28th of October. Today I bought a Voda sim card and all the Xiaomi handsets are back to life with VoLTE logo displayed during the call. Hope they will not block me in a couple of days. Will keep you posted.

    • Can you please which phone models so the rest of us can have some hope too? Thanks.

    • Unfortunately aren't people speculating that the big 3 will eventually merge whitelists etc and so there's good chance even vodafone won't work when that happens? You've already got people on Aldi telstra that was fine but then got blocked.

      • +1

Not sure how they will necessarily achieve that, given the different LTE implementations resulting in different behaviour by a handset when loading a generic or T specific MBN config (with or without a TOV / foreign Sim). From some comments I've seen it appears that Voda may be implementing a block by individual device IMEI (but that doesn't imply the assessment is / is not based on TAC).

If they do proceed to a single consolidated list, and especially if they evaluate it strictly by camp-on when home network fails whilst device is online (and doesn't realtime load / switch to a different mbn), then the list of acceptable devices will be at risk of shrinking again.

We've also still got Optus 3G towers signalling availability to accept E000 and routing calls but Telstra seemed to evaporate recently (and they've put out a media release saying all their 3G towers are off).

I suspect this is why you're seeing confusingly mixed results from people with dual Sims and ok / blocked when using a combo of one/both Sims in slot A/B… because ultimately most (perhaps all) consumer phones only have 1 radio in the HW. Until every 3G is offline and these folks at Comms Alliance or the other relevant groups get together and propose a path forward it will continue to be MNO roulette.

Hey Xiaomi fam! We know it’s been a challenging few weeks with network disruptions and our website issue. Rest assured, we’ve submitted all necessary documentation to Optus, Vodafone, and Telstra, and are working closely with them to get Xiaomi models purchased through local authorised resellers whitelisted on their networks. Thanks so much for your patience and ongoing support—stay tuned on our X account for updates. We're here to keep you connected! 🙏

    X @xiaomiaustralia

We're still here for Australia! Our site, xiaomitech.com.au, was taken down due to a misunderstanding with our domain registrar about security. We're working to get it back online. Stay tuned here for updates!

    • I wonder if this includes all models or just the recent ones that have been sold in Aus.

      • Just the devices which have TAC codes matching the ranges Xiaomitech listed

Each TAC code theoretically contains 1 million individual IMEI numbers so that range covers somewhere between a maximum of 33.5 (dual SIM) to 67 million (single SIM) devices

For reference, Xiaomi's global smartphone shipments in 2023 were 145.6 million units so Xiaomitech are definitely only requesting whitelisting of devices they distributed into Australia

    • +3

"stay tuned here for updates" - The cynic in me suggests that's very similar to Xiaomi feedback replies along the lines of "be patient and wait for the update", which seems to be code for "yes, we've acknowledged the issue and made a sympathetic noise but nothing will actually happen."

    • Can you please confirm that you are authorised by xiaomi as their Australian supplier? Any roof will be welcome

AVG reports :- This website has been identified as a malware site ???

This happens when I attempt to go into the 2nd blog post.

  • wow this is so shitty. it is possible to hack or jailbreak the phone to bypass this?

    • IMEI spoofing is illegal and not at all equivalent to the typical rooting/jailbreaking especially with the technical stuff required. eg if you were already doing legally dubious stuff it'd be easier to just use burners etc.

  • If Telstra says your phone will work as normal does that mean it is guaranteed to work on Boost?

    • Ideally yes but realistically no one knows. You will have to find it out the hard way.

      • Hmm, what's the cheap way to find out? If I buy a $2 Boost starter sim and put it in phone that will tell me without needing a plan, no?

"Check your mobile phone by texting 3 to the number 3498."

That is Boost's advice and the reply is, no problem. So if it is a problem after I pay for a plan I think I'm entitled to a refund.

Ah, but the text wasn't sent from a Boost sim. It's an IMEI problem isn't it, so that shouldn't matter.

        • Yes its a real problem.
Y'day did an experiment with a compliant TCL 30 5G Model T776H phone which was blocked using a Boost sim. Went to a Telstra retail shop and tried their sim in the phone - did not work. Next went to an Optus retail shop tried their sim worked no problem, then went to a Vodafone retail shop tried their sim worked no problem but at the same time was warned by the Vodafone Tech that they couldn't guarantee for how long it would work with their sim.
2 out of 3 sims worked.
          So go figure !!!
By the way MobileCiti are still selling the exact same phone with no warning.

        • Don't think you can connect to the network without an active plan with the Boost $2 starter sim not entirely sure though. You can use the Telstra $2 starter sim to test it out. If it works should in most likelihood work with Boost since they basically use Telstra network and its Telstra who is implementing the block not boost.

  • give up to wait xiaomi update. bought Samsung s22 from amaysim in black Friday deal.

    • Its not really an Black Friday Deal. The S22 has been that price on Amaysim for a while now.

      • Oh, got it—so it’s not actually a Black Friday deal then. Thanks for the heads-up!

    • Same, with the extra $200 off. Good phone, but really unhappy with the battery life. How is yours?

      • I updated the phone to the latest patch and did a full wipe before reinstalling all the apps. While using it, I noticed the battery life is about one-third less compared to my Xiaomi phone. That said, for $299 and compatibility with any network, I really can’t complain.

  • Looking at getting a grey import Galaxy A25 5G global model from Catch. Will it work on the Optus network?

  • From xiaomitech's FAQ post, #5 seems to suggest that it's possible to request your carrier to unblock your device. Has anyone been able to successfully try this?

    1. What should I do if my device is blocked by my carrier?
If your Xiaomi device has been restricted from connecting, we recommend reaching out to your carrier to request that they unblock your device. Alternatively, you can wait for the carrier’s whitelist update, which we are actively working on with the major Australian carriers (Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone).
    • +1

Seems like passing the buck. Can't imagine any telco simply whitelisting/unblocking a phone model after one email from a random customer. You would expect them to be waiting on official technical documentation from Xiaomi themselves confirming VOLTE E000 before making any further moves considering all the government legislations etc around this whole kerfuffle. Unless they come up with some other new way of checking and verifying ala using netmonster that people are doing themselves to check VOLTE and bands.

  • My Redmi 7 and Redmi Note 9 Pro where blocked on Amaysim, just looked and the 7 now has signal, note 9 is still dead in the water.

    • Your Redmi 7 was blocked before but it is no longer??

      • Yes it was blocked for about 5days, it was on, with signal, called it each day, not getting blocked, it had no credit, but I could SMS Optus on 9999 for a phone unlock code, part way through that sms exchange it got banned, every day no signal after that for around 5 days then without an internet connection, it made a noise, it was an sms from 9999 saying Option not recognised, and has had signal since.

I've had some limited action from Xiaomi support. Whilst I can't actually do anything about it myself (I'm not in Australia and won't be for several months), some of you might like to have a go.

In response to contacting Xiaomi via Services & Feedback (Phone settings / Services & feedback / Submit Feedback), I got the following message.

I'm not sure what good the logs will do them but it's some kind of action.

I'm not sure what good the logs will do them but it's some kind of action.

Confirms the suspicion that Xiaomi are a garbage tier operation in Australia

They don't even have 1 worker on the ground here who can test 3 SIM cards - 1 for each carrier - across all the phones they've released in the last 3-4 years and capture some logs

Unless Xiaomi get off their ass and setup a legit first party operation here - just like Motorola/Lenovo - retailers will cut them off faster than Xiaomi deals are currently downvoted

      • Unless Xiaomi get off their ass and setup a legit first party operation here - just like Motorola/Lenovo - retailers will cut them off faster than Xiaomi deals are currently downvoted

For the size of the population here and the potential sales, they probably determined that it wasn't worth their effort.

Sounds to me like the support person is just giving you a general "i have reception issues" reply. Nothing in that seems to suggest they have the slightest idea about the 3g shutdown and phones being blocked.

  • Looking at a Samsung A55 'international' version on Kogan, sounds like I shouldn't pull the trigger? (On non Aus stock, even from a major brand)

  • Xiaomitech have (re?)listed the POCO F6 and F6 Pro on their store - both are recent Snapdragon 8 series devices

Redmi models are still gone even though they are still being sold on their eBay store

    • Yeah they have had the POCOs up for a while, i was looking a week or two ago. I'm not sure they are confirmed to be okay or not tho?

      • I bought an F6 and I've had it a bit over a week now. It connected to Optus with no issues (after my F3 got blocked).

It's TAC validates OK on the Telstra checker, and sending a "3" to 3498 returns "We've determined that this device will not be impacted when the Optus 3G network is switched off…".

I can't see why it'd get blocked at this point.

        • Where did you buy it?

          • +2

@Iggemo: Got it from Kogan (not a third-party seller). Price was better than Xiaomitech and Xiaomitech don't make it clear which model you're ordering (256GB or 512GB).

            • @AdrianW: Isn't Kogan a grey marketer ?

              • +2

@chrisie: I guess so. But does it really matter? They're an Aussie company trading in Australia so they have to follow ACCC rules.

Latest from Xiaomi….I've sent repeated emails to ask them for a SPECIFIC DATE for releasing an update, but they won't provide one. I've explained that's no use to me, as my phone (Mi9T) will be blocked by Lebara (Vodafone) by the end of the month, maybe today, maybe next week (already blocked by amaysim(Optus) and Aldi (Telstra)).
Xiaomi Support; "Rest assured that we'll assist you on this (I'm not at all assured)…..We suggest that you patiently wait for updates on your device (ha ha). If there are available updates to solve your problem, the system will push them to you in a timely manner.(I don't believe you) Also, please note that the difference between the region where the product was purchased and the region where it is actually used may prevent you from receiving the system update."
I do believe they will update some phones, but not necessarily before they are fully blocked, which seems likely end of this month, and not necessarily older/foreign bought models. My Mi9T is only ok on Telstra, according to https://www.telstrawholesale.com.au/3G-Network-Closure-Block…, but confusingly, blocked on aldimobile which uses Telstra. I'm assuming Telstra is wrong and the phone isn't 000 compliant. Black Friday might be arriving just in time….

    • my phone (Mi9T)

Well at least it looks like it was released and sold here? So you have a better (non-zero) chance of getting an update if there ever is one versus the rest of us that bought overseas off aliepxress etc lol.

  • My RM Note 9 Pro is working on Vodafone but not on Optus. Lucky I'm just using as spare.

    • Same here with Redmi Note 5. Only time will tell though. Most likely even Vodafone will block.

My phone Redmi Note 13 Pro Plus 5G Global version, 23090RA98G, HyperOS 1.0.5.0.UNOMIXM, TAC: 86730207 In the suposed whitelist on https://xiaomitech.com.au/.
Listed above as Testra Ok / AMTA (Check)
Phone was blocked sometime yesturday on Optus as 11pm I did a reboot after only two days of owning it was nearly sdropped out a day before.

For a $600 from Xiaomi Aliexpress official store / one JB sells for $900 is a shame for someone without much money on government support etc to just throw that down again on a new phone.
My Fossibot DT2 tablet which I bought from Aliexpress works fine.

Shame that the TAC's they provided may be cut off at any moment as I checked the model numbers if they were compatible before buying.

I am willing to do a news interview for anyone if they want.

    • Optus has been very aggressive with blocking. Pretty much every device not destined for the AU market has been cut off. There has even been talk of all 3 network providers eventually amalgamating their whitelists into a single whitelist.

      • There has even been talk of all 3 network providers eventually amalgamating their whitelists into a single whitelist.

Whether it is a blacklist or whitelist, it will be a single list by the end of the month because that's how the legislation is setup

If Optus allowed a phone that was banned by Telstra and Vodafone:

        • Optus customer makes a 000 call
        • Phone cannot connect to Optus tower because Optus coverage is garbage
        • Phone auto bounces to Telstra or Vodafone tower
        • Phone connects to Telstra or Vodafone tower but is TAC banned
        • 000 call is not connected
        • According to some OzBargain members, Optus customer should then "find another solution" like wave down traffic, shout for help etc

Xiaomitech has about 2 weeks to get the mass TAC bans reversed by all 3 carriers

If that fails, Xiaomi as a brand in Australia is finished

They could have easily setup a trade-in/buyback/swap program to avoid the mountain of e-waste created and provide some certainty for customers

But that would imply they were a brand that didn't cut corners, take your money and then do a runner when they were exposed

I mean are we even a drop in the bucket for them in terms of overall global sales?

If you can get a refund, JB is selling the same phone now reduced from 900 to 717.. so you could just get it there…

      https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/xiaomi-redmi-note-13-pro-…

      • Bought from Xiaomi Mi Store on AliExpress.
Is the global version so should be much the same as what JB is selling mby the IMEI TAC code is different but may not be.

So don't think I can refund it.

What a mess. My parents came back from New Zealand earlier this month,

    • My dad's old Huawei Nova 3i got blocked by Telstra Wholesale (on Everyday Mobile). So he went and bought an iPhone 15 Plus.
    • My mum's Poco F3 can't make/receive calls but can still receive text and has data over LTE. Fixed after turning on VoLTE & VoWIFI.

Now I am afraid that her Poco F3 might eventually get blocked, and I'm not around to fix it for her. Meanwhile my OnePlus 6T bought in Jan 2019 is still working.

Hi mate, sorry to hear. Same boat for me and my extended family. This was going to be bumpy for some folks & phones for sure but, due to the late October ECS Determinations and Min Directions, has been a much larger debacle than was really necessary. Best bet is to check the TAC (first 8 digits of the IMEI) on the Telstra Checker. If you get a clear pass there then those devices should remain fine (on Telstra and their MVNOs). No equivalent check for Voda and Optus currently, and they have a similar but not same approach to compliance (also have different network gear and configs) because there isnt a standard for Voice over LTE.

The Poco F3 fix for your mum would indicate it didn't have the LTE config files properly loaded / active for whichever network for carrying calls properly over LTE data. Glad it got fixed, and it may remain ok.

Voda seem to have been the most accessible, largely due to their gear being closest to what may be described as (a non-existent) standard.

My Huawei got booted from Telstra and Optus, despite it being properly configured for VoLTE over their networks. They care not because they are (somewhat necessarily) taking a broad hammer approach (default config, is device known to be compliant for VoLTE on Telstra and confirmed to carry E000 over LTE on their network). The AMTA check will indicate if you've got some (possibly temporary) hope elsewhere, like with Vodaphone.

If you have any mobile service accounts with Amaysim, I've had a first-class experience with them offering quite decent devices for free or super cheap, and $200 vouchers. Some of the other Carriers and the MVNO (eg More, Aldi, Kogan types) have been absolutely dreadful.

Even more disappointing, the responses from most of the Telcos or MVNOs, ACMA, TIO, Minister seem entirely indifferent to the impacts this has had on people and the shockingly little time to prepare (after months / years of generally reasonable communication about the 3G shutdown) to the abrupt changes made literally days before being blocked.

  • Hi guys, my Note 11 Pro 5G from Ali is still working fine with Amaysim. What's the deal? Can i safely assume it's all good? I still keep getting messages saying saying it's impacted though.
