Looks it’s not a product I’d normally buy, but some people like this style of product and realistic it’s the same stuff as you’ll get in the fresh seafood section and probably even some restaurants. China is known to be pillaging the ocean so it might actually be pretty high quality. It probably has farmed basa and prawns though, in which case I won’t buy it, I’ll check the ingredients when next in Woolies. Anyway many people buy farmed prawns and basa, so this is just a cheaper way to do it.

      • Is wild better than farmed?

Also how to tell if restaurants use for eg overseas squid insteqd of aus squid. I got a feeling this Vietnamese restaurant uses overseas squid

        • Yes, wild caught fish and prawns are supposedly healthier and cleaner. The problem with farmed fish/prawns is that the water isn't necessarily clean, and there's a greater risk of bioaccumulation of pcbs from the food used.

          Squid wouldn't be farmed I don't think.

I think the only way to tell with a restaurant is to ask them, or price and taste. Most restaurants will serve farmed salmon, and would point it out if it was wild caught, as it would be far more expensive.

@morse: To be honest, most of the consumers have no idea where the ingredients came from. In fact, most cheap eat places offers cheap ingredients. You don't need a degree to figure it out. Expensive restaurants don't necessarily give good stuffs either. The best way is make your own foods imo!

          • @morse: Thanks for detailed explanation!

Imported ingredients. From North Korea? Probably. A country known for its adherence to international standards. /s

It was probably packed by North Koreans working across the border in China.

      • Could be. Could also just be their own likely exploited workers too. I’d say most the seafood is from Vietnam or their big trawlers (for the squid component)

Good deal. Aldi only 800g for $13.50 think. Could be wrong slightly wrong with weight price but I know very close.

Yep, it's definitely a good price for the product.

Doesn't really bother me. I've been eating for years. Quality is good in my opinion.
