[ACT] OzBargain 18th Birthday - Southside Canberra Meetup (Thursday 28th November, 6:30pm) @ Burns Club Star Buffet

This will be my first time at an OzBargain Birthday catch-up, looking forward to comparing notes with the other bargain hunters, my tribe!

Star Buffet at the Burns Club in Kambah. I'm a member so can sign people in, but worth coming a bit early if you need this. People with NSW licence won't need to get signed in.

Thursday night is $34.80 pp, with bottomless drink for an extra $4.50 so will be covered by OZ Bargain for account holders. This year they have said partners without accounts (or newly created accounts) won't be covered - but even if you have to pay for your partner it's half price buffet!

Menu and other details available at https://www.starbuffet.com.au/locations/burns-club/

Comments

  • Do people think weekend lunch or week night dinner?

  • Okami sounds good, don't the mind time.

  • For some reason OzBargain pinged me for 18th Birthday in Melbourne, at Fortress which I've been to once and is really good actually.

Anyways, I'm in Canberra. Thought I was out of luck, but we do that here too?!

May I ask, how many went last year? Any families go?

Also, Akami is nice, a bit pricey at $44 / person. And it's only all you can eat in as much as you need to prepare/plan what you will order and know how big the portions are, as you pay extra if you dont eat it all, or you run out of time to order more if you order not enough as it's busy. It IS nice food :)
We've not been to Burns club this year. Seems to have gone up $33 Sat-Sun Lunch, $35 Mon-Thurs Dinner. Bit more relaxed as you can wander all the food stations for what you want.

Both are great choices OP !

I also saw Yaki Boy Woden has $38 Monday nights all you can eat, but No idea what they include/provide for that, never been there just walked past.

Also… 18th Birthday in Melbourne is free!? How do they organise that?

  • +2

If we can get some people interested and organise the event OzBargain will sponsor it up to $45 per head - see the main thread for how it all works https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/869902

I am thinking re date a bit later in November to give us a chance to get people to RSVP.

I don't mind the Yaki Boy suggestion, might swing past and check it out. I like the Burns Club people but know not everyone does.

Not sure how many went last year, looks like there were two events, one had six, the other can't tell.

  • Thanks for organising!

Personally, I didn't rate the Monday Yaki Boi. Food was quite average when we went earlier this year. Okami is def better for Japanese fare.

If you're thinking AYCE, could consider Dookki (Belconnen) as well. Food was tasty but does require some sharing.

    • Holy hell! How did I not know about this place. Great suggestion, and thanks for the feedback on Yaki Boy. Think we see what other suggestions pop up over the next few days then try to work out a consensus.

  • I'm interested, though more keen on star buffet as the AYCE.

  • I'm interested but depends on timing as I am away on 2 weekends in November (I'm not available on 15th to 17th, and 30th).

Otherwise I should be good for weeknights dinner.

Dookki or star buffet would be my pick as AYCE.

A few other suggestions here too - but I haven't been to taki / korBQ / amici

  • thanks for organising! i wouldve done one for ACT but the limit stopped me lol. i usually hosted on the outskirts of canberra because you can find much better deals there

might rock up tho just to have a chat and catch up with my mates there.

    • You do? How have neither my wife nor I ever seen any of these in years of ozbargaining lol… So which ones have you / are you hosting?

  • +1

    Thanks for the responses :)

And my wife and I share check out the deals from my account. Definitely can't go out for a buffet without her, can you even imagine woah, buffet is her favourite haha.
We're both ozbargainers for years, but I just asked her and both of us literally never seen the "Birthday events" before today!

And yeah, no personal experience of Yaki Boy, so happy to knock that out of the running if others dont rate it, it was just one I saw but don't know it.

I read that same reddit you did CodeXD haha. Seems a few more choices, but with limits, I mean this is only the capital city of our nation haha.

Amici is AYCE but a single pasta only, no variety?

Taki is the one we always walk past on the way to the toilet in Canberra Centre, always seems empty. I assume from the pricing it will be amazing food, it certainly looks schmick. Something about the cost lol. Be hard to eat $90/each worth of food at their "Buffet".

KorBQ I don't see any AYCE?

We like Star Buffet, but like trying new things too. Canberra really needs some more buffet restaurants. I still remember Pizza Hut sit down restaurants, before they closed and the pizzas got all sugary.

  • Depending on date you opt for might actually be able to make it along this year. Open to any of the options that have been suggested

  • Depending on the date I may be interested. Would prefer to not have Star buffet again but keen for pretty much anything else.

  • I went last year to Happy’s Chinese Restaurant. I would be keen to go to an event this year, depending on the date. Star Buffet sounds good.

  • +1

Hi all, sorry haven't had a chance to logon for a few days.

Seems like there are two camps forming so have created a poll to test date and venue. If it comes up majority "Somewhere Else" will canvas some additional options.

    Please spread the word!

  • FYI star buffet is inside burns club and will require membership to get in. Either someone with membership (or sign up for membership there) to sign people in or if interstate can get in for free.

When visiting the Star Buffet, please ensure that everyone over the age of 18 brings valid government issued photo ID (Licence, Proof of Age card, Passport). If you reside in the ACT at least one person will have to be a member of The Burns Club.

    • +1

Good point. I'm a member so happy to do sign ins. Depending on how many people we might need to meet a bit earlier so we can sign on and maximise AYCE time 😀

      • -2

I'm also a member, and live close, so can sign others in if required. I really can't go without my wife + 2 children though~

        • Uhm a bit confused. I was offering to turn up early and help here, as I have a membership card to Burns Club, and I got 3 downvotes? Whoever downvoted me… why please?

          • +1

@Mithril: You forgot about the second part of your post? You want to causally +3 when I've already replied to your previous comment with a link to Scotty's post saying

OzBargain meetups are strictly users only this year

            • +1

@CodeXD: That being said CodeXD further down on the same post Scotty also advises this:

Q: Can we bring family members and kids to OzBargain meetups? Will the cost incurred by them be paid by OzBargain?
OzBargain meetup events this year are for OzBargain members only — you need an OzBargain account (that's not recently created) to register for meetup events. Our meetup budget of $45 per person is also for OzBargain members only. You can bring your family or friends to OzBargain meetups. However if they are not registered to the event, they aren't sponsored.

So he's actually saying you can bring others you just need to take the cost on yourself for those persons.

              • +2

@BillyStm: Yes you are right that scotty have said family members without account can join but not sponsored. @Mithril made 0 indication that he will be paying separately for wife and 2 kids.

That is the reason I negged it. If they want to clear things up, then they need to explicitly say that. Organisers are not going to assume that everyone has read scotty's post and it adds burden on them to when people bring +1 expecting to be covered.

I am not the organiser of this event and this is my opinion. I am just providing my justification for negging the comment.

                • +2

@CodeXD: Can definitely appreciate that as to how it reads, I can also appreciate there may of genuinely been no intent for it to imply that, just poorly worded. That's why I just thought id copy that FAQ across in full so that there would be no ambiguity :)

                • @CodeXD: And just another thought, I think CodeXD you are the organiser for the Dookki event? So you can see I didn't sign up for that "free meal", so yep, not after a free ride :)

Sincerely though CodeXD, thanks again for replying, at least I know why one of the Negs got me haha, I honestly had no idea.

              • @BillyStm: And thanks @BillyStm , never done this before, and was fully expecting to pay for all 4 of us… just didnt know if it was a "family" type of event with anyone else's family going.

            • @CodeXD: Ah ok, thanks for your reply!

I was kind of going with what I'd said on my earlier first post in this thread, as we've never done this before, never seen the birthday event thing, and when I provided all the costings, I was fully expecting to pay for myself and my family. I had no idea there was a budget/sponsor part haha!

I was actually surprised when I saw that, and when I asked "Any families go?" your reply "only available to those with an ozb accounts" seemed a pretty clear no… my above comment was saying I can't go without my family. We are not casually after a free meal, I was actually expecting to pay for all of us including myself. I just wanted to have a friendly meal with fellow bargain hunters :)

I'd hoped someone would reply with "yeah families go to these things, my family went last time and it was great" kind of thing. "only for ozb account holders" kind of made me think families are not welcome, as I doubt many children are registered ozb account holders.

              • @Mithril: Like I said, read up on the main thread as it contains all the information you need.

                • -3

@CodeXD: My original comment question was a polite "May I ask, how many went last year? Any families go?"

Long post, as CodeXD wanted me to explicitly explain and I wanted to clear things up for the 3 that felt so strongly negative toward me that they negged me, for what should be a happy social evening.

Perhaps this is all a misunderstanding, but it has made me feel hesitant, when I was originally happily looking forward to this event. I was so happy finding this event, as covid lockdowns started a very long time of limited social events for us.

I didn't originally know of the main post because there was no link in this event post, and I'd never heard of this before. I just searched for ozbargain birthday canberra (after I was email pinged there was a Melbourne ozb birthday meet up) and found captain danger's post. I did not see a "main post".

Firstly CodeXD, I appreciated your initial reply comment, to the main post, which provided additional information, although it did not answer my questions at all, and paraphrasing your words, you “casually” didn’t put the most relevant part to my questions where Scotty said family and friends are welcome. Saying these events are “only available to those with ozb accounts” and later “ozbargain meet ups are strictly users only this year” clearly implies others are not allowed. Notice how negative assumptions can be made, but I did not neg you. Repeating again as your last comment "read up on the main thread as it contains all the information you need" does not contain the information I was asking.

Reflecting on the various follow up comments, and I'm trying to think the best, and I have taken BillyStm's considerate comments onboard, but I find myself sad that an event organiser disregards earlier comments, negs someone for their own misunderstanding without even asking them, and then comment again repeating "read the main thread" that does not answer my question about did any families go last year.

Please, if you may, Where in the "main thread" does it say how many went to the Canberra event last year, if there were any families at the last Canberra event?

Those 3 that Negative voted my Offer To Help out while I clearly indicating for the third time I had family (hoping someone would reply if any families went/go to the Canberra events), because you thought I wanted to take advantage of this generous meet up make me feel really sad. Not one of 3 negative people answered my question of "how many went last year, any families go?" CodeXD as organiser for Dookki meet up knows I was not taking advantage of this birthday event, did not sign up for a “free meal” at Dookki, when I could have. If that was what I was after I’d have signed up for all available. Perhaps reflect on yourselves.

I had no idea it was subsidised. I was not expecting my family to be paid for. I was not expecting myself or anyone to be paid for. If you "read up on my first comment" you could see that I did not. Why would I say "$44 is a bit pricey" if I expected it to be paid for me? Why would I ask how do they organise the Melbourne event to be free, if I knew it was subsidised?

As asked, To be Explicit: I was NOT casually imposing +3 for free. I was offering to help and saying I could not go without my family. Hoping someone would reply that there was anyone with a family going, or alternatively that the Canberra event was just an adult only event. Not a single comment “welcome to bring your family, friendly event.”

Perhaps you, or the other 2, could have replied to my comment with a friendly “Last year there were/weren’t families, you are welcome to bring your family this year. You will have to pay for them as Scotty said in the main post. We’d love to see you join us all”. I’d likely have replied with “Thanks so much, I was feeling hesitant as I didn’t know if this particular Canberra meet up was family friendly. Lots of social gatherings in Canberra are adults only so I didn’t want to cause a social faux pas. No worries about paying, as I was expecting to pay for all four of us. Also as our 2 children are very friendly well behaved 1 and 2 year olds, we can comfortably cover the few bucks change for them haha.”

I’ve been a member for a long time though I’ve not posted a lot on ozbargain, as my work and family take most of my time and I give back to my community by volunteering with the elderly and those in need.

                  • +4

@Mithril: Wow what an essay, lets break it down shall we?

I didn't originally know of the main post because there was no link in this event post

The main thread is what I linked you on the same day you commented about "May I ask, how many went last year? Any families go?". I even said "Read up on the main thread". Host of this event also posted it same day as a comment.

you “casually” didn’t put the most relevant part to my questions where Scotty said family and friends are welcome.

I copied and pasted directly from the main thread, about the family part and that it is different this year. If you had read the main thread, you would have known about it.

that does not answer my question about did any families go last year.

There was a change to this from previous years where families were subsidised. If you had read the main thread, you would have known about it.

Not one of 3 negative people answered my question of "how many went last year, any families go?"

You are really caught on this this comment when it wasn't even the one that 3 people neg'ed. That comment has nothing to do with the negs lol

Where in the "main thread" does it say how many went to the Canberra event last year

If you had read the main thread, you would have known about it. Click on the main thread, and there is a link to to the "29 events" from last year. Click on each of the 3 events to read up on who people brought.

I had no idea it was subsidised.

If you had read the main thread, you would have known about it.

"Not a single comment “welcome to bring your family, friendly event."

If you had read the main thread, you would have known about it. There is a section called "Q: Can we bring family members and kids to OzBargain meetups?"

Crazy how evident it still is that you haven't read it lol

Definitely shorter to read the main post than to type out your comment. It would also answer all of your questions too.

                    • @CodeXD: Thanks for the reply! Apologies for the long comment, I type a lot as I'm trying to be really clear. It doesn't always work, for sure, haha!

It feels a bit sarcastic and mean that you keep repeating read the main thread. I'm spending my time and responding politely, as I appreciate you made the effort to respond mate! I have read the main thread multiple times. I don't see it answering what I was asking. I don't see any mention of how many families went to the Canberra events last year, do you? If only some friendly person who went to all three events knew and could answer easily, that would have saved these long comments. I feel a 10 second answer could have saved days of unnecessary comments.
And I'll repeat again, I had no idea it was subsidised before you replied or OP posted his later comment. How could I have "read the main thread, you would have known about it", before I knew there was a main thread? Do you know something before you know it?
And quoting just part of questions as if they were whole questions seems a bit cavalier.

Ok I think I see the disconnect. It seems to be a matter of wording and reading/timing.

I've definitely re-read the main thread after your reply, and it looks like you are focusing on Scotty saying "Families are welcome" right?, which is great that Scotty said that!. However I was actually asking "Did any families attend the Canberra event last year?" And then I was wondering "Are any families planning to attend this year?"
I was just trying to get a sense of the actual family turnout specifically for Canberra. It's a fairly easy question that I've seen others ask in many meet up threads.

Also, might be more friendly to welcome a person new to the event to copy paste the part about families being welcome as that was what I was asking, since you copied part of the info about only members being allowed. It might sound like others are not allowed, reading just that. When I share info with others, I do link to the source but also include the full relevant details to avoid confusion. Either way, I do appreciate your reply, as it helped me find the main thread.

My comments about the negs, was to try to illustrate that the assumed "+3" which got the negs, was not me trying to get my family in for free as I'd earlier indicated I thought everyone paid for themselves. Which was before you linked the main thread. If you only saw that one comment out of context without reading my earlier comments, I can see how it could be misunderstood, but All my comments offer suggestions and help, not trying to take advantage of a subsidised event.

I've just read the main thread again and I honestly cannot see where it says anywhere if any families went to the events last year in Canberra, or if any are going in Canberra this year. Yes, Scotty's post says families are welcome all over Australia but I was asking if any families went in Canberra. I've also read the 3 previous event posts in Canberra, but I can't guess from just those comments if any families are going this year. Perhaps someone who went to those events might know if any went, and if any are going this year? Be a darn sight faster and easier than trying to guess from just short comments a year ago.

It might in fact be crazy, for sure, but you've said so many times now, you're sure all my answers about did any families go to the Canberra events last year and are any families going in Canberra this year are in the main thread. Any chance you could copy paste or direct link it for me as I really can't find it. Thanks in advance!

                      • +1

@Mithril: Pretty sure tracking the number of families/children attending events isn't the best move. The first question in the chain here I saw from you was - "I'm also a member, and live close, so can sign others in if required. I really can't go without my wife + 2 children though~"

Which is kinda… baiting? It's clearly mentioned in this post that partners/non-ozbargainers aren't 'covered', and the main post explains why. For someone who likes to write, writing a very ambiguous statement about 'not going without your wife and kids' is very much implying you won't be bringing them, or you're angling to get them in for free? It's very ambiguous/pointless and thus almost feels like baiting.

                        • +1

@TogTogTogTog: Understood. I read too much into the negatives and over reacted, my apologies to CodeXD and everyone. I originally did not know anyone was covered, but after reading the main post I did, so I should have been more clear in my words (wondering if this was going to be a more family event, or more adult event in this specific event - I couldn't Message captain danger as he has DM's turned off). You are entirely correct, it was ambiguous looking back at it now. I genuinely wasn't trying for that though, I have no issue at all paying for my family as my children are literally 1 and 2, so they are next to no cost.
We are no longer able to go due to family things, but I wish you all the best evening! :)

                          • +1

@Mithril: Nah no stress mate! I think people are a bit sensitive about it. In previous years people would bring 'extended' families and a casual meetup would turn into like 10 people having dinner and one family of ten, but all comped as OzBargainers. (Did we seriously expect Ozbargainers not to exploit the system?)

It's too late now… but hilariously, if you were to make Ozbargain accounts for your 1 and 2-year-old they'd be eligible for next year's meetup. Gotta start the bargain hunters young ya know? :P

                            • @TogTogTogTog: Woah really? Ok, I had no idea. I mean, my wife and I are certainly bargainers, but extended family/10 would strain the limit of a good deal I understand now haha! We've been on this site for many years now (my wife using my account looking through deals to help our family), but neither of us recall ever seeing any events before. I'll take your advice with the family accounts and set up one for the wife and children. They both actually LOVE to bang about on our keyboards already lol, the oldest has driven the office computer for over an hour once before I found him happily doing searches on Edge, accessing the Help pages etc. And they both grab our phones when they get the chance and it's a challenge getting them off them lol, so they are well prepared for the digital age and ozbargain :D

I'm no Anthony Green, but I'm about to call this one for Star Buffet on the Thursday night. Will leave the poll open till tomorrow afternoon then will convert into an event for people to start registering.

  • Forgive my ignorance, but how do I vote for this event at the Burns Club? I would really enjoy participating and meet fellow OzBargainers ☺️ Cheers.

    • +1

You'll need to wait for scotty to update this forum post to an event so people can register

  • Can now register for the event at the top of this post - I've kicked things off, thanks OP for organising

  • Any chance there will be some OzB tee shirts available?

  • ooooh thanks for organising!

  • Thanks Cap'n, registered XD. excited to compare notes and see the ozb crew in canberra!

  • Have registered for this event and look forward to seeing fellow OzB ACT, but would like to confirm that I can bring my partner at my cost. Thanks

    • Hey born2Bwild that should be cool 😀

  • Thank you very much for organising this 🙏 both me and my husband registered, and we look forward to meeting you all. ☺️

  • I have withdrawn from this event. I noticed there was 1 person on the Waitlist, so that works well no one waiting now. I wish everyone the best evening :)

  • Hi all, the main post suggests organising organisers who can help with checking people in via the OZB website.

Is there anyone coming along who would be happy to help out?

  • I'm not really sure how it'll work but I'll happy to volunteer!!
