How are you selling to QLD customers considering the recent law changes?

    • We will take reasonable steps to verify any QLD customer is not a minor.

      • -8

        We will take reasonable steps

Like what? Does the law require “reasonable” steps or are you required to ensure you don’t sell to minors?

        • -1

          Reason for the vote downs?

The shipping page doesn't mention anything about checking people are 18+ upon delivery.

In fact I can't see anywhere that even suggest customers need to be 18+ at all.

          • +1

            @PainToad: Reasonable. Steps.

reasonable steps taken by top men. Top men are working on it right now. [shifts pipe] Top Men.

More seriously, why do you care?

            • -2

              @entropysbane:

More seriously, why do you care?

Nothing irritates me more than businesses that think they don't need to follow the law simply because it's an inconvenience.

Us plebs need to follow the law, so businesses should too.

              • +1

@PainToad: Well, it’s a classic example of a stupid law difficult to enforce and more about the announcement and grandisement of the politician than the actual practicality of implementation, the cost of which is borne by the business. It isn’t as though the QG is establishing a system to monitor and audit compliance.

So here is how it would go:
“Dear buyer, are you over 18?”
                “Yeah, Bro!”
“No worries, the knife will arrive on Thursday”.

                Option with extra steps:
“Dear buyer, are you over 18?”
                “Yeah, Bro!”
                “OK, wot’s your DOB then?”
Buyer provides a date older than 2006.
“No worries, the knife will arrive on Friday”.

Third option: Qlders are unable to buy knives for cooking purposes online.
Unless a business spends a lot of treasure developing a website and database to store information like a birth certificate or drivers licence etc, the above is as far as they can go. And even then, what’s to stop our aspiring chef with the means to spend $360 from getting their older sister to buy it?

We should not be creating ineffective laws for the sake of it.

                • -2

@entropysbane: It doesn't matter what you, me or the business thinks of the law. The fact is, it is the law. Businesses don't get to pick and choose what laws they follow. They aren't above the law.

Also, it certainly isn't impractical. The process would be no different than that required for a business selling alcohol online. Verify 18+ using drivers license upon delivery.

@MiracleWarrior84 do you plan on addressing this at all?

How do we verify age online?
Sellers must take all reasonable steps to ensure they do not sell to minors, including online.
Some businesses use third-party verification software or apps which check if the ID is valid. In comparison, a basic pop up or tick box asking ‘Are you over 18’ is unlikely to provide responsible businesses with confidence that they are not at risk of selling to a minor and breaching the law.*

Consider whether you need to sell controlled items online and whether you have the capacity to perform the necessary ID checks. If you are unsure, consider phasing out these items or limit them to physical store sales

      It's simple, minors can't afford $300+ knives

      • +4

        Yay! I’m a minor!

    • +4

Mate what kind of boujee eshay shanks someone with a global? Use your noggin.

      • Where in the legislation does it say "fancy knives are exempt"?

But they are also selling cheap knife sets too.

    further $10 use CFG10

    Much too expensive. And unnecessary.

Get yourself a half-decent 20cm chef knife (yes, the Global G2 qualifies) and a handful of Victorinox serrated-edged tomato/steak knives and you're largely sorted. Most of the rest is rarely useful clutter.

    • Clearly there's a YMMV on this but - I have had one of these sets for a couple of years. Love it and use every single knife frequently. Obviously they don't all get the exact same use, but having a properly sized knife for what I'm working with makes a huge difference. Ironically the smallest one, the paring knife, is probably my least used, but then, my wife uses it quite a bit.

I have definitely seen, and had, knife sets where I didn't use half of them, for me, this is not that though.

      • Same here. Have had my set for approximately 8+ years now. Every knife has been used and frequently

Some people would get value from these, but for general day-to-day I go with the Wiltshire stay sharp 20cm Cooks knife. I cook a lot and I've got a range of knives including a pretty tasty Shun cooks knife which is worth a few hundred dollars but the wiltshire is just so handy as it is always really sharp as it comes with its own protector/ knife sharpener. Yes, it's a little bulky but performs great and two or three pulls each time you remove it from its sheath keeps it super sharp.

On sale at the moment for $18.95 at Victoria's Secret, I mean Basement.

    Or Big W for a few $ more - $21.70

    • Not quite my choice - but the idea of one main 20cm knife is where it is at.

  • I have this set that I got for less in an ebay sale that was on here a few years ago. Great knives. Razor sharp. Note that the handle is metal and slippery when wet. We have a japanese santoku with wood handle that gets much more mileage than these bad boys but the different sizes of globals are nice to have and use as required.
