  • Which destination server are people using? I've been using new Zealand which seems to get decent speeds but wondering if I might have better luck elsewhere

    • I switched to Arizona a little while ago and seemed to get better speeds oddly enough. Haven't been bothered to try Japan or Singapore but they could be good too.

      • Good idea, I'll give those 3 a go 🙂

      • Japan has been okay for me. Singapore also good enough but seems a bit more hit or miss.

  • wait another month for Black Friday.

    • Deal will be pretty similar, maybe a little better

Used AirVPN years ago and the speeds were shit. Tried just now , connected to NZ via wireguard.

On my 1000/50 connection download speeds were 330mbps…. on my ProtonVPN connection to NZ (also Auckland) speeds are 850mbps

    so… no thanks

now I need to get them to refund my 2EUR

    edit: FYI Singapore was 730mbps
    US-LA 450mbps

    • Thanks, I'll give Singapore a go!

I went with this deal instead https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/871576

VPN + GST was about $90

    Cashback was $77

$13 for 2 years which I think was good value

    • Surfshark, Nord, PIA etc. are all trash.

      • +1

not really a fan of Nord generally, but the speeds were definitely better than AirVPN and can be obtained basically for nothing on cashback offers.

currently I use proton vpn which I like , but it isn't cheap

      • depends what you want them for.
they're a good value for money if you're not really looking for Top notch security

      • Fair - I just need to IP / region hop every now and then.

  • If you need port forwarding, Proton VPN has it.

    • +1

      but so does AirVPN ;)

      once logged in: https://airvpn.org/ports

in fact, AirVPN port forwarding is superior to ProtonVPN - as the ports on Proton change regularly.. it will not remain the same which can be annoying as you need to update the port in whatever app you are using it for.

  • I use nord for everything except for one port forwarding need, for that I use PIA. With Nord I get 850-950mbit down, so nearly maxing my 1000m link. PIA I mostly only get 90-120m down, so pretty terrible but does what I need. Note that PIA does give you the same port for a while, sometimes a week, sometimes a month, but then randomly changes. When my PIA expires I might five AirVPN a try. I have not played with proton yet but have heard a lot of mixed reviews about speed, so to pay more than other services and still have speed issues seems pointless. I would be keen to hear from other users and their experience with proton speeds.

so to pay more than other services and still have speed issues seems pointless

proton is almost line speed for me to AU servers

  • I can't even download the UI. I've tried multiple times and using different downloaders (IDM). This does not bode well…

edit: Just managed to download it after about 20 retries at about 50kb/s on a Gigabit line.

  • 0.82Mbps down on their "recommended server" (Canada). Fastest was ~260Mbps on their Singaporean servers. Sigh… no port forwarding for me then. Back to Mullvad.

note: I'm on 1000/50 with gigabit Ethernet to router.

      Back to Mullvad.

mullvad is nice and I used them when they had port forwarding. now that they don't , I use Proton and find it as good as Mullvad.
