Advice Please on Refurb Desktop Purchase - Dell Optiplex 7070

Hi, I'm currently looking at a refurbished (Grade A - Seller Refurbished) Dell OptiPlex 7070 SFF Desktop PC Intel i5-9500 @3.0 8GB RAM 256GB SSD Win 11 for $252 delivered.

The computer will be primarily used for emails, YouTube and general web browsing.

What does the OzBargain collective think? Will this computer be fast enough to fulfill it's intended purpose and is it a good buy for $252?

Can anyone kindly offer suggestions on and where I can get a better buy? Budget can stretch up to around $400 if required.

Thanks in advance for any help given.

    $249 delivered, $3 cheaper.

Same Optiplex 7070 model but it's got (more) 16GB of RAM and includes a wifi adapter

    • Thanks, yeah did see that one but the condition is listed as 'good' which concerned me a little.

Spec wise though, these computers are fast enough for the intended task?

Yeah. Dell Optiplexes are basically office computers, in it's previous life it would've been used at a big business / government / uni or something similar, so they are not slow PC's.

Anything relatively modern (less than 5-6 yrs) with Intel 6-core / 16GB RAM will be good enough for quite some time.

You could ask them what the condition means, but it’s likely just the case. Only issue might be dust inside.

Cosmetic condition won’t impact the lifespan of it at all.

The task: The computer will be primarily used for emails, YouTube and general web browsing

      ANSWER: This computer is OVERKILL!

Any old iPad or tablet (POST 2016) will do the job and with a lot less RAM and processing power.

So if Op is asking if this is good enough.

Sure, but even a computer for half the price will do the job well

      • Pleased to hear it, the person I'm giving the computer should be very happy for years to come.

I would buy from AustralianComputerTraders. Been buying from them for years. Excellent customer service and product.

Their 12 month warranty and relative closeness (30 minute drive from me) if something went wrong is appealing, only issue is I'd be paying a $127 premium - not sure that would be worth it?

  • When my SME employer was acquired by another company, we had been reselling HP and they did Dell. Feedback from the field service techs from both companies was that the HPs were way better. You'll be able to get one with Win 11 Pro for similar money. Choose between desktop mini or SFF (small form factor).

  • Thoughts on a Lenovo ThinkStation P330 Tiny Intel i5 9400 2.90GHz 16GB RAM 512GB SSD Wi-Fi Win 11 ?? - $269

Bigger SSD - 12 month local warranty?

This or the Optiplex 7070 ??

    • Why get an i5 when you can get an i7 for the same money? OK, I need to lookup the exact processor…

  • So basically the HP EliteDesk 800 G3 Mini PC Intel i7 7700T 16G 256G NVMe USB-C WiFi Win 11 Pro is a much more capable computer to the other computers I've posted?

I looked them up on Geekbench: Optiplex (Intel Coffee Lake, 2018) is slightly better than the EliteDesk (Kaby Lake, 2017) but for your use case I don't think you'll discern any difference. I linked a HP with 16GB ram which is more desirable than your 8GB Dell

      • Thanks, I appreciate your time looking that up for me.

        • Apologies for suggesting an outdated hardware option. I was really only here to say HP hardware may be better than an equivalent Dell. In any case, here's an example of a HP desktop mini with a similar processor to the Dell Optiplex

    • Would help if you posted links.
Unless you want to install a gaming graphics card, I would get a USFF / micro form factor.
But better to get an 8th gen plus (8-10 are almost the same) rather than that 7th gen.

I'd take the i5-9500 over the i7-7700T easily. Keep in mind that 7th gen is not officially supported by Win11, and Win10 EoL is in a year.

Also, 8th gen is the gen they started adding more than 4 cores in the mainline models. And the T models have a limited TDP and lower clocks. https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/3444vs2951/Intel-i5-950…

      • Thank you, yes upon some more research I did see that the HP Elite Desk was an older generation which doesn't 'officially' support W11 and I have factored this into my decision making.

I'm leaning towards @scrimshaw's suggestion of the Optiplex 7070 with 16GB of ram at this stage.

Do note that the Optiplex 7070 is a small form factor desktop PC (~7.8L in volume) with expansion slots and extra drive space, whereas the HP Mini and Lenovo Tiny are mini PCs (~1.2L in volume) that are much smaller. If your use case involves buying one, never add extra PCI cards or extra drives, and just leave it hidden behind the monitor, then those 1L mini PC might be more suitable.

I recently purchased a Dell 3431 SFF I7 9700 32gb ram and 1tb ssd win11 Inc wifi and optical drive VG cond delivered from UnTech in Vic. for $500 after eBay discount and it's a ripper. Great company to deal with. Not showing as available atm but might be worth a call to see what they have.

    • just had a chat with untech - they can do Optiplex 7070 i7 9700 /32/ 1tb for 510 , plus can add NVIDIA Quadro P1000 for extra 125 (i need it for video editing).. not sure whether it is worth it or not , considering for a few extra hundred $$ i can purchase latest tech with rtx 4060 etc

Depending on your location, you can look at auction desktops. Grays is one such portal.
