Legal everywhere except NSW and SA.

      • +1

I also believe these are illegal in Vic as according to their website specs they have a maximum speed of 30 kph and Vic has a max capable speed of 25kph

        • Yeah when speed restricted they're fine.

I once asked at the police station whether riding an electric scooter is legal. I was advised to ride it in my backyard but not allowed outside. However, it appears there is not a proper law in place to regulate it. I know riding a bicycle requires wearing a helmet, but I do not know about electric scooters. Has anyone been fined for riding an electric scooter for any reason?

    • +8

Depends on your state. Yes, people in Sydney CBD have been stopped and fined (quite heavily ~$2,500+) for riding them. But it doesn't seem to deter others. There's tons of people on eScooters zipping up and down George St, both commuters and recreationally.

Police tend to stop easy targets such as those not wearing helmets or riding on pavements, then tack on plenty fines.

      Example consecutive fines:

      • Using an Unlicensed Vehicle For Class - Class C/R/Lr
      • Using an Uninsured Motor Vehicle
      • Using an unregistered motor vehicle on road
      • Driving on footpath
      • Motor Bike Ride Not Wear/Secure Fit Approved Helmet

The inconsistency of laws in Australia is ridiculous!

NSW: "Personal e-scooters remain illegal on NSW roads and road-related areas, including footpaths, shared paths and bicycle lanes."

Victoria "You can legally ride an e-scooter in Victoria if you:
      ride on:
shared-use paths (not on footpaths), or
roads that have a speed limit up to 60km/h
are at least 16 years old
      wear a helmet
do not travel more than 20km/h
do not use your mobile phone
do not carry a passenger (dinking)."

it's almost as if australia was founded by joining a bunch of states and territories together

      • QLD isn't that complicated: You can ride it on roads with a speed limit of less than 50, on bike paths, etc. In these places the speed limit is 25. You can ride on the footpath and the speed limit there is 12. Otherwise treat it like any other vehicle: stop at red lights, don't use your phone, and don't ride drunk.

    • +2

They're illegal in SA and plenty of people have been fined for riding them. Cops will usually let it slide unless you're being a dick or riding without a helmet or something.

    • I've ridden one for years in NSW and didn't receive a fine.

You should email transport minister and ask them why they are taking so long: https://www.nsw.gov.au/nsw-government/ministers/minister-for…

    • +6

Why do I get so many down votes for asking the question? Wouldn't it be better to know the laws and regulations before buying one?

      • +9

because you're a big boy now and you can google the answer if you don't already know. But you've already got your answer from the cops, so you're just here stirring up trouble like some kind of bot.

      • In addition to what M00Cow said there's a select few people here who always throw shit at escooter posts because they're from NSW and think their laws apply everywhere. Or in other words… jealous trolls.

      • +2

you're being downvoted for being wrong + lazy

      • +1

Don't mind these keyboard cowards… this is the only time in life they get to feel powerful, be generous and give them that.🤣

    • Move to Melbourne. 100% legal.

    • I got done for no helmet in Vic. $200 each for two of us stung. Turned down on appeal because it's a 'serious safety offence'.

  • +1

    eligable for qld rebate?

    • Tis not. These have a max 30kmph and the rebate requires less then 25kmph. I think this is why theyre selling them cheap.

    1-Year Warranty
    Buy with confidence

I'd buy with a lot more confidence if you backed the product with a better warranty.

C'mon.. the dodgy Storage King warehouse in Preston must get you over the line…

    • At the price point Midas well get ninebot

Kugooaustralia links are not working. Or just for me?

  • -3

We have to wait for a little kid to get collected and killed before they become regulated.

    • -4

I think that's how the most of the laws/regulations are made. But it's not just about kids. Even healthy young people can get badly injured if hit by one. They ride it too fast on footpaths.

      • -1

Yup and many times it's the archetypal 'junkie' that rides these around since e-scooters get you around, but don't cost a lot like a car and have zero maintenance.

I could definitely see some crass individual smoking meth and then getting on one of these and going for an 'icecapade' - then killing someone.

    • How many regulations do pushbikes have?

      • helmet, bell, lights at night, set or vehicle laws they're expected to follow.

        • So, the same as scooters in states where they're legal?

    • Then they name the law after the victim

  • anyone got recommendations for e-scooters under 1k?

    • +2

Segway, Niu, Inmotion. Can't go wrong with those brands for under $1K

    • For the price you probably can't get anything better than this

      • Can get ninebot max2 or g2 under grand if u shop around

    • If you can attract to just over $1000 - INMOTION S1. It’s got range, power and from what I understand a good warranty network. And is legal in states where scooters are allowed

  • +4

note that the kugoo app no longer works, meaning there is no way to lock these digitally with your phone. good luck getting any after sales support

Are electric scooters legal in Australia? - Road Sense Australia:

Don’t forget the ev exemption if you’re allowed to package!

  • As far as I'm aware, in Victoria Scooters are not covered by TAC Insurance unlike other vehicles. So if you happen to go flying off one and get something like, oh, a brain injury, you're on your own.

    • Are cyclists covered too?

      • I believe cyclists are not covered unless a registered, insured vehicle is also involved whether the other vehicle is moving or stationary and the same applies to e scooters in other words the claim is against the other persons TAC coverage

        • Interesting, so in VIC they class an escooter as a vehicle but no TAC cover. I guess that would be because you're not paying rego. I wonder if they define an ebike as a motor vehicle too.

In my state escooters have their own definition so they can't classed as a motor vehicle.

          • @Clear: What about those with just one wheel? I don't know what it's called. It looks cool
I think it's a vehicle as it uses a motor too

            • +1

@Suricate: Electric Unicycle. They're legal in my state as they fit the criteria of having at least 1 wheel. I'm pretty sure they're still illegal in VIC

You'll get significantly better range with them (70km+) and they'll handle hills no problem. With suspension they're amazing for off-road.

          • @Clear: Esccoters aren’t vehicles in VIC u don’t need to register them.

            • @Gavman: I see that transport like to refer to them as vehicles, but the actual legislation does not. So the whole TAC argument is pointless.

    • -2

What do u need insurance for? Medical care is free… at 25km an hour u less u ride off a cliff unlikely to get that injured. Or if hit by a car in such case TAC would kick in

      • -1

Medicare doesn't pay you're rent if you stop working

    • If u happen to get a brain injury I don’t think ur gona care about TAC. Mental state will be worpt and if ur that disabled there is always NDIS. Not to mention mental treatment is free

  • Looks like a good way to burn down your house/garage

    • Sounds like when you combine this with a home and contents package, you could get a free home rebuild. You should post as a deal!

Buy 2 and you have a 4 wheeler tesla.

    • +1

      Wouldn't a 4 wheeler Tesla just be a… um… Tesla?

    • Only if the escooters are from Tesla

500W MOTORS: an upgraded high-quality 500W motor provides stable and strong power allowing it to climb hill at 30 degree

    pigsarse it will. 30° = 58%
i tried a Mercane Pro Dual 500w Wide Wheel on a 12° /21% 160m long hill and it made it, but it was cruising around 10km/h for the last 30m

The steepest St in the world is only 19°/35%

    • I think the actual spec says 15°. Which I assume is with a 50kg rider

    • +2

Can confirm this is very slow even on slight inclines. Speedy boi downhill though

how shops even allowed to sell something that is not legal in Australia?

    • +2

It’s not illegal to but just to ride in public (on certain states)
