The route to Athens is fairly straightforward with two short stops, but for Thessaloniki the stop in Istanbul is long - 22 hours-ish. However, Turkish Arlines offers free stopover accommodation for stops over 20 hours. You can probably force a long stop for Athens too, if you want to take advantage.

My grandparents are still chasing a refund for biz from over a year ago - tickets that Turkish cancelled mind you

    • I had trouble chasing refunds for flights canceled by Turkish (was actually Malaysian airlines codeshare with Turkish). At the end had my refund from Turkish Airlines.

    • Yes I recently booked a similar flight ticket to Europe with Turkish Airlines. Instead of paying in full , I paid the price hold amount initially and paid full amount in 3 days. Had to chase up multiple times and after multiple calls and escalations, finally got my hold amount after 1 month.

  • Hi when would be best / cheapest time to purchase flights from Sydney to Europe for travel during late Sep 25 to mid/late Oct 25?? Thanks

    • +1

I'm interested to know too. I have a trip planned for a similar time next year and noticed that there seems to be fairly standard (high) pricing for 8->12months pre-booking. From what I can tell, 4-6 months prior booking appears to be the sweet spot. Though of course some good deals can present at any time.

    • Sample of one: I flew to Athens last August and found the cheapest seats on major carriers (Qatar, Emirates/Qantas, Etihad) around mid January. Your timing shouldn't be as competitive though as you're going after the end of their Summer?

      • Thanks. It’s not their peak Summer but it’s during school hols here.

      • end of EU summer is the perfect time to visit, which means its very busy

    • You're still a bit early - airlines usually release seats 12 months out, so only now will you even see Oct 25 tickets. everything is less crowded and fights are cheaper :)

  • New to overseas indirect flights here. Could you extend the stay in Istanbul by a week for example and then continue on to Thessaloniki?

Istanbul is definitely worth a few days stopover!

Yes, I spent a month in Turkey 20 years ago as a backpacker. I loved it and I'd like to show a bit of it to my partner and thought if you could stop there for a week and then continue on to Greece that'd work out well.

Recent anecdotal experience on Turkey as a tourist destination is overwhelmingly negative.

Great price! Any deals for July?

    • July is peak season, so generally prices will be high then. But you never know! Ill keep an eye out.

Beware that Istanbul has become one of the most expensive cities in the world now, much more expensive than Sydney or New York. Inflation is over 75% or even more.

      Giftcards

    • It’s gotten much more expensive than it used to be, but outside of the airport is still overall cheaper than Sydney

Lol I just got back from Istanbul.. were you eating at the Peninsula daily and comparing it to a kebab shop in Sydney?

Assuming you have actually been, right?

      • Maybe d86 is paid in Turkish lira, so has experienced the inflation locals have.

Went a few months ago, eat out at various local restaurants in Sultanahmet. Were more costly than the two Turkish venues here in Southbank QLD.

    • Its at 49% not over 75, calm down. I could eat 4 kebabs there for the price of 1 here.

28 euro, yes $45au, for 1 double whopper meal at airport in august.

Hagia Sofia was free now its 20euro - 3 euro for the tininest, flimsiest paper overalls, like the ones at a murder scene, to cover my legs.

Been a few times, never again. Makes Sydney look cheap in comparison
