nbn FTTN Vs 5G Home Internet

Hi everyone! I have a question about NBN vs 5G home internet.

My current rental has fibre to the node nbn, but the maximum download speed is 36 - 41 mbps and the upload speed is 22-24 mbps.

I live in Canberra - is it worthwhile getting 5G home internet instead? My current plan is with More, it’s $66/m for their Value Plus NBN (50mbps download/17mbps upload typical evening speed).

I’d really like something a lot faster whilst keeping the cost low, if possible :)

Why don't you try to find out yourself, iinet - 5G has trial offers. Its all depend on how closer your are to the tower and what you do with your internet.

Check here if you're eligible for a $0 FTTP install. If you can't get FTTP go and trial 5G internet.

    • Ooh thanks for that! I checked, not eligible yet but signed up for emails for when it is available.

  • Do you game/do anything latency intensive? If so, stick with your FTTN as a cable is always going to be more reliable/consistent, even if slightly slower max speeds.

If not, 5G might work well for you if you're just streaming/emails/browsing.

    • My housemate does game occasionally, she said gaming was fine on the current plan. However yeah for browsing and streaming, it can be quite slow, especially during the evening.

Ok 40 Mbps down is a bit dismal even for FTTN, so that says you are a long way from the Node and/or the quality of the copper/infrastructure from the Node to your house is abysmal. Getting a quote for FTTH will be the.. If others in the immediate area have then you have a chance…

    • No it's perfectly normal for FttN.
As designed by NBN, 30% of a Node's coverage will get <50mbps assuming pristine copper (both NBN and Internal lines)
ie closer to 50% of the properties covered by a node with real world Telstra/NBN copper will get 50mbps or less (and likely more than that because in-home wiring was often star connected to multiple phone points)

Having said that, based on the upload speed OP will probably see a decent spike in max download if they get the internal phone line replaced.

OP should also check if they're in an area that can get the free fibre upgrade.

      • Yeah the internet is connected through the phone line which is a bit random. Yeah I’ll ask the real estate agent if they could replace it. I did check, we’re not eligible for the upgrade yet.

What plan are you on? 50/20 ? 100/40? If we knew what plan you are on, then it would indicate whether that speed is good or not.

    • They have 50/20.

Ah, see that in the last part now.

So they are getting good upload which is promising. Download is pretty average for sure. I was getting 60/30 on a 100/40 plan when I was on NBN FTTN, I am 700m from the node, yet previous place i got 100/40 and I was 500m from the node.

OP, check you do not have any bridging going on in the house either. I had that in my the place I bought which impacted my speed/performance. Once I removed the bridge, a lot faster and stable. Still not 100/40, but it was better.

What is your use case? How many people in the house?

    • 2 people, mainly streaming and browsing. We can both game online occasionally.

      • You might find latency higher on 5G if you do game. What is your current latency?

  • I've got to admit , my fibre to the property has been at best , very average to say the least .I have a Netcom wireless modem in the garage and can usually get signal within the house but it's casually on and off experience. So I'm a little lost with my next move too.

The nbn NTD can stay in the garage. You don't want a router with Wi-Fi in the garage as your Wi-Fi speed and Wi-Fi range can suffer. What you want to do is move your NetComm router within the home. Get a sparkie or cabler to run ethernet cabling from the nbn NTD to the NetComm router.

If your speed and Wi-Fi range still sucks replace the NetComm and purchase a faster spec router or mesh router system or router with wired access points.

      1. Do you have the NetComm NF18ACV by any chance?
      2. Who's your nbn provider?
      • Yes to the first question and second is leaptel.

        • NetComm NF18ACV has known Wi-Fi problems. Replace the NetComm first and if the problems persist get ethernet cabling setup.

          • @Twix: Any suggestions for good WiFi ? Nothing too expensive , pensioners.

            • @Murkymerv: Sure.

              1. What's your limit? $150, $300?
              2. What speed tier? 100/20, 250/25?
              3. How big is your house/unit/townhouse?
              • @Twix: $150-200.00 - NBN M2M - Full Throttle - Unlimited whatever that is . House is small three bedrooms plus office/small bedroom.

                • @Murkymerv: Leaptel full throttle is the 100/20 speed tier. As for the router there is the Asus RT-AX57 or TP-Link Archer AX55.

                  • @Twix: Thank you , is the Eero 6plus any good ? I was thinking about that or are these you've mentioned much better?

                    • @Murkymerv: eero 6+ is popular however you might need two.

(coverage for 1-2 bedroom home up to 140m2)
(coverage for 3-4 bedroom home up to 280m2)

      • Yeah we have a Telstra modem in the living room, ground floor of an apartment. It’s so annoying!

  • Used to be on a shitty fttn 25/5 with constant disconnection and slow speed. Now on Telstra 5G always get 500mb/s as I am close to tower.

Have you looked to see if you can get 100/20 FTTN?

Ask your ISP what your obtainable line speeds are then work from there. As your upload speeds are quite good I'd expect a decent speed on the download side of things.

  • Im not a gamer and have three 5G towers in range so I changed to 5G internet (Canberra) with TPG and it has been much better than the NBN. I used the AusPhone Towers app (iOS) to check the towers near me.
