Same price at JB for anyone without Costco membership :)

    • +2

Technically …. $3 more at JB.

But good point. We don't all have costco.

      • +6

For $3, an average OZB would sign up for Costco to buy this ipad, and then cancel membership.

        • +1

can you cancel membership each year or how often?

          won't they eventually ban you?

          • @pinkybrain: They have digitalized their system recently (app with QR code & 2 factor authentication, no need card for fuel & access anymore…). So in theory they can crawl stuff out and ban people pretty easily.

      • yeah, I have several mates like to buy at Costco but could not justify membership as commuting back & forth kills all benefits :(

        • I have taken yearly membership twice ever since Costco started and both times did not renew as I coudnt be bothered going to Costco more than a couple of times.

          • @techno2000: yeah, our family was very lucky as our new home is 5 mins away from Costco Epping. Whereas the previous home in QLD took us nearly 40 mins driving so missus obviously said no to membership xD

  • Was just about to post the deal.
Got one for school next year !

      What grade?

    Shame it’s not yellow…

Reminder that these are discontinued and Apple no longer sell them. Also, it’s the last iPad with a home button and the iPhone SE (the last iPhone with a home button) is expected to be replaced soon with a new version without a home button.

Wild guess, but I’d assume Apple would be keen to no longer have to keep customising their OS for home buttons and may drop support earlier than normal.

    • +6

To be honest I think they’ll just give it 7 years of support regardless.
My wife’s iPad Pro 10.5” was recently dropped by ios 18 even though less powerful iPad gen 7 still supports it.

It seems like they’ll give it 7 years of updates regardless of whether it’s better or worse.

      • If it's anything like the ipad Air 2 it'll continue getting security updates for a while.

Look at the air 2 released in 2014. Still have received updates this year. It would be like if Samsung still updated the original tab S.

Not sure why they’d need to do that, mapping a button to do an action is a very easy thing to do. I doubt they’ll remove support so soon.

And even if they do remove support, you can use gestures to navigate the ipad, just like you would on a non-home button ipad.

They’d likely just continue major OS updates for another 3 years at least, and that’s still better than most brand new android tablets. Security updates tend to continue long after that, my iphone 7+ still gets security updates 8 years after it launched.

        I don't think you've actually used a iOS/iPadOS device without a home button.

        • I have, I have an iphone 13 and I used my ipad with gestures, not the home button. I personally prefer the home button on the iOS devices and gestures on the iPadOS devices.

    • +4

It’s the most useful button if you are driving and delivering.

    • +1

This iPad works fine without the Home button, you don’t need it at all.

Apple will support it for a long time, especially security updates. I still get them for an Air 2!

Why would they need to customise anything?

All they need to do is import the code for the home button into any new updates..

It is more likely to simplify manufacturing

  • I found this, although not completely brand new - is cheaper and has slot for Data SIM: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/186693818902 - $365 with 15% off code OCTSAV15

      Refurb aka second hand

      • Yep, and no apple care or warranty

Waiting for 10th gen to hit below $500.

    64GB=criminal
Also it is showing its age - lightning cable, no Wifi 6,

    • +3

Most people use it as a web portal and would never fill the 64gb storage. Wifi 6 also won’t be very useful in this use case.

Fair point on the lightning cable, though this means you can use the older, cheaper apple pencil with full functionality unlike the cut down new one.

    • +1

its $797 for the 256GB variant in JB HiFi. OMG

  • +2

I'm done with Lightning ports. I need a new iPad as my 5th Gen is not receiving updates any more, but USB-C is a minimum now.

  • Have some jb giftcard. Travelling overseas.
Can someone pls advice if I buy this iPad , can I claim trs ?
Or I can claim TRS only if I buy with a debit/ credit card ?

    • Why can't you claim TRS with giftcard?

Giftcard is still money, just a form of payment method

What is important is that you got the receipt that showed the total amount you paid.

Also best to check up on all the rules with TRS office in your state.
