HP USB-C G5 Docking Station $179 Delivered @ Hub by Triforce

180

First time poster, so apologies if lacking any detail. Looks like a pretty good deal from what I can see, these babies usually go for around $250 on HP's site (https://www.hp.com/au-en/shop/hp-usb-c-dock-g5-5tw10aa.html) and roughly $225 (currently on slight special for $205 @ Amazon).

Disclaimer: I'm unfamiliar with Hub by Triforce, but a quick Google search shows they get generally good reviews and I'm seeing quite a lot of deals from them posted here on OzBargain, so they seem to be legit. Would love anyone's opinion on the seller, as I'm considering buying one of these from them myself. SKU also seems legit (see above HP site link.) Please correct me if someone spots a lemon here. Seems almost too good to be true.

Kind regards

Knowing HP and their printers there will be a hidden subscription fee associated with this ;-)

    • Fair point. 😂

    • A few years ago, I purchased Proliant server to sit on the network as a NAS. Not long after, email from HP stating you have to pay for any more BIOS updates! Even if it was fixing one of their mistakes. I still recall the overheating DV HP laptops that actually melted plastic.

I pass, but it still seems a deal if you're up to it.

    We use them for projects
Probably one of the best MSP's I've dealt with in the mid/enterprise space

    • By "them" do you mean Hub by Triforce? So you're saying they're fairly reliable?

      • +2

Sounds like they are talking about HPE.

      • +1

We use triforce for some of our projects
They have a msp side which is really good

  • +3

These are really good and reliable. Was provided one from my workplace to WFH and hasn't missed a beat for the last 4 years

    • Thanks for the feedback. Any experience with the seller themselves, by any chance?

      • +1

Triforce is reputable. Have used them for a long time (over 10 yrs).

        • Awesome, thanks for that.

  • +1

Upvoted, not hating the player, but hating the game - wtf man, only 3 USB ports?!

    • +5

These have 4x USB-A (2 on the back, 2 on the side) and 1x USB-C at the front.

      • Missed the side ones, my bad!

  • Any idea what the specs are for display output?

    • +1

Not quite sure, but all the specs should be in the product link on HP's site I posted in the body.

      • +1

Unfortunately the product page is pretty sparse on details. Even the user guide (link below) only states "A single DisplayPort can support a screen resolution up to 5120 × 2880 @ 60 Hz, depending on your computer, cable, and monitor capabilities.”

I looked and even went through a few pages of reviews but couldn't find any

  • +1

Good that it supports 100W PD
but data speeds seems to be slow given the price tag
the 3 x USB outputs are only at 5Gbps USB 3.0 speed
the type c to the Dock is likely to be max at 10Gbps?

The older version of these that look like a rectangular brick usually go for about $50 second hand and are just as solid built. For those that don't want new, it's worth considering.

I used to manage a small fleet of HP laptops at work. The laptops were great, but the hubs were the absolute worst. We had three types of hubs, with failure rates after just a couple of years of 100%, about 70% and of these larger brick type hubs about half had failed.

Got a used one from marketplace for $50 :)

Managed to pick one up for about $85 'refurb' which isn't refurb just out of some office when they were done using it. It's a good dock, but I dunno about buying new.

  • +1

I'm in an office with hundreds of these.

They're ok with a HP laptop, but horrible with Lenovo. Consistently needing to open the laptop every time you undock and redock after meetings for it to identify it and generally a reboot a day.

    • Did you try pressing the button on the unit

  • +1

    $179 for HDMI 2.0? Hmmm… can't do that.

    • +1

It does also have 2 x display ports, though.

  • Can anyone comment on DP resolution and rate?
    Would it support 4K 144Hz?

  • Anyone know how these work with MacBook Air (M-series)?
I am assuming it's still 1 external monitor as these don't seem to be DisplayLink and 1 external monitor is Apple's limitation.
Keen to see if there's anything else to consider when these are used with MacBooks.

Does this dock come with an AC wall adapter?
I sort of assumed it must do, to provide power, but couldn't see that listed anywhere.

(Edit: Found a mention of it including an AC adapter on the HP page for the item, but not the Triforce one)

    • +1

      Yes it does
I bought one a few years back
