Interesting that they cancelled so early, since it's not due to release until the end of November.

Obviously oversold their allotment which is poor form for amazon

  • Anyone else have this happen?

Nope, not yet anyway. Pre-order still intact. Fingers crossed.

Are you sure? Even if you nabbed one at 10:01am, you may have been one of the last before allocation was exhausted.
Check what time your Amazon 'Order Confirmation' email came in - mine arrived at 10:00am exactly.

I guess that's probably how they are choosing who to cancel :/
A shame it took them 2+ weeks to figure out they oversold like this though.

Thanks! I was really keen on a 30th Anniv. controller but I'm not going to compete with bots and scalpers to get it, and I wish I didn't have to.

        • You should have done the JB Ballot as many people on here got them, me included they even did a redraw for those who didnt pay on the day

          • @solidussnake: what jb balot

              @capslock janitor:

              @solidussnake: what jb balot

              I would ask this also.

In any case, the notion of a ballot itself underscores what I'm saying: I want to buy this item, but I don't want to have to jump through hoops to get it. That includes completing a ballot, of all things, the success of which is really only known in hindsight. The fact that JB Hifi has to run a ballot in the first place says that there's something wrong with the sale system. But I'm not saying anything that hasn't been said thousands of times over already.

I personally feel with such limited stock all should do a ballot, hence as you said bots just buy them all, and everyone was really after the Pro to resell online..

Would you like to propose a better solution?

If you're going to be frustrated with anyone, it should be Sony for deliberately producing these items in such limited quantities as a one-time release to create a frenzy.

JB's ballot system was an excellent solution because it required a JB Perks account, which uses phone number authentication, making it harder for scalpers to create multiple accounts. Even if they managed to create several, it still came down to luck, with a limit of one item per account.

                • @mboy:

Easy to say there's a problem, but harder to come up with a solution.

Not really: with a profit of US$6.5 Billion you have a lot of options, and the solution is to make more.

Sony intentionally produced these items in very limited quantities as a one-time release to generate hype, and by all accounts, it worked

It might have worked. Yes, demand has exceeded supply, and that has created hype. But is the hype due to those who really want it, or to those who have the means to get one and then flip it for twice or three times the price? Long term, like the boy who cried wolf, I can't envisage being enticed by this or similar products in the future because of this: why would I, when each promotional message also implies that I can't actually have the product being promoted? I mean, why develop and market a product that resonates with me while also virtually guaranteeing that I cannot have it?

JB's ballot system was the fairest approach imho.

I agree, to the extent that FCFS can't work largely because of limited supply. But the solution is to make more.

                  • @blitz: I edited my post before you replied. We're on the same page, your gripe is with Sony, not the "sale system", as you previously said.

                    • @mboy:

your gripe is with Sony, not the "sale system", as you previously said.

                      Here's what I said:

The fact that JB Hifi has to run a ballot in the first place says that there's something wrong with the sale system

I use the term, "sale system" because it's difficult to identify where Sony's retail design ends and JB Hifi's retail design begins. Fundamentally, though, they are two sides of the same coin. In fact, JB Hifi's ballot makes this artificial scarcity more palatable and hence more sustainable. The ballot is mechanism for placating but not addressing the symptoms of Sony's under-production. I bet it makes everyone feel good that they're being "fairer" with this ballot mechanism, but a ballot system doesn't make an unjust system just. The entire sale system is BS.

                      • @blitz: And I can see how this position makes me look like a grumpy old person, but I just don't like it when consumers get screwed over. I know there's loads of cases where this kind of thing happens (the original PS5, for one) and I can't be angry at all of them, but all of this just makes that debacle look all the more deliberate.

                      • @blitz: Except they didn't under produce anything. It's called limited edition. Limited. They even announced how limited before it was even up for pre-order.

                  • +1

@blitz: I get that you don't like this, but this is a complaint without merit. Sony made limited numbers of an anniversary product. No different from what they did 10 years ago with the 20th anniversary, and no different from sneaker drops, which happen every other week. They're selling a specific colourway for uber fans, so don't have to make more. Limiting their quantity doesn't preclude you from buying regular sneaker or PS5 controller. JB's ballot system is about as fair as you can make it. Have you tried buying concert tickets? It's 1000% more scummy.

                    • @SydStrand: the complaint is not without merit at all. It's an obvious and direct by-product of the "limited edition" policy: to ignite interest in a product and then constrain supply of that product will naturally result in a shortfall of dissatisfied customers. I'm not going to roll over and beg just because Sony chooses to make this product a limited edition.

Yes, I understand that the market for concert tickets is like this, but I don't know anyone who likes the market for concert tickets. And yet those market forces are a little more tolerable than here: a band can't simply play more nights, and a venue can't just add more seats. Tickets are limited on this basis. But Sony could make more. And they could sell them at a higher price. But instead they choose this manipulative tactic to curry demand for a product that seemingly most will never get.

It's a strange game, and the only winning move is not to play.

                      • @blitz:

So your opinion is that there shouldn't be any limited editions at all? Of anything? Or just the things that you happen to enjoy?

              • +2

@blitz: To be fair it was the fairest system. Limited scalpers buying(even if they tried under multiple perks accounts). An open sale system is just asking for scalpers to pick many of the available stock. I did t bother as I have no interest in current gen other than switch. But I thought the ballot was the best system offered around the world given the limited stock of this 30th anniversary release.

  • My order is still ok. Ordered minutes after it went live. Certainly not immediatly as I was busy ordering the Pro console itself via EB to do a trade in there.

I did have Amazon cancel my Stalker Limited Edition monthssss out from release. Unsure if they oversold that or if they aren’t getting that edition at all any more (it’s listed but sold out).

EB games website was an absolute shit show. But as always EB games is the most reliable of all retailers as much as people don't want to admit.

      • Worked fine for me but think I lucked out by doing it on my iPhone and selecting Apple Pay as I do by default when available. Only saw much later people were struggling with credit card payments.

Is this controller going to be impossible to buy without a preorder? I got the Astrobot one because it's the only one with white sticks. But this anniversary controller looks cool too. Maybe I shouldn't, I only play single player games…

    • +1

Well, you can resort to eBay scalpers, but the retailer pre-orders are well and truly over. Sony never re-released the retro colourway version of the PS4 controller from the 20th anniversary.

      • Oh well, I shouldnt' be wasting money anyway. This is cooler than the astrobot controller tho :(
