Recommendation for Affordable Wireless CCTV

Coming back from holiday and found out my house was broken into. They took away all the cards, car keys, watches and wife's jewellery. Damage is substantial but I need to move forward.

So far I have done this.

  1. Report police, get police to the scene and a report.
  2. Redo the key back and front
  3. Erase and redo the garage remotes.
  4. Cancel all the cards, disputes some of the already happening transactions, will call the merchants first thing on Monday to report and hopefully stop the pending charges.
  5. Redo the car keys: I have a brand Sealion 6 that I plan to do the car keys at the dealership but there are two old cars which I hope to get the keys for cheaper (erase all the existing keys and get new ones, Lexus RX350 2010 and a Kid Rondo 2008). Appreciate any recommendations, in Adelaide.

Moving forward I want to DIY a security system in my house, looking for 4-6 cameras with wireless and rechargeable battery. my router would be 20m max from the furthest camera. Any recommendation.

Erase all the stolen iPads remotely.

Anything else that I need to do?

Thank you.

You usually get cameras before a break in…

Have a look at Eufy or similar. Make sure to hide the homemade (which video records to well) or look at a cloud based option (paid) so then the thief’s can’t just take/smash the drive thus resulting in your video footage being lost.

also have it attached to a backup power

      • Most have a battery built in (Eufy can run 365 days on battery power) so you can just hook up a solar panel and you’re set.

Yes, but put a Battery Backup (UPS) for the Router so that it still uploads to the cloud when the mains is turned off.

  • I'm really sorry to hear this happened to you.

You want to think about the entire security system. Some things come to mind:
    - As mentioned, secure the NVR/NAS against smash and grab attack
    - Consider the deterrent value of highly visible cameras, consider which looks more scary - a "Eufy" consumer grade camera or a pro-looking CCTV turret
    - Automated floodlights
    - A motivated intruder will get in eventually but you can employ delay tactics - extra deadbolts, window locks, a safe for your valuables etc.
    - Think about what your response plan is if you are on holiday and your camera detects an intruder
    - Get to know your immediate neighbours
    - Consider entry points, a common weak security point is back or side doors especially where there's a side access from front to back
    - Exercise discretion in who, outside your immediate household, knows that you have a bunch of jewellery, watches, knows about your holiday plans etc.

Other thing to consider with the cameras is wired vs wireless. Yes wireless is much cheaper up-front but is not 'set and forget'. Recharging 4-6 cameras every few months seems like a chore that could easily be forgotten once the initial novelty of having cameras wears off.

    • Thank you, I have gotten a Eufy set and will see how it goes. Your suggestions about how to future-proof the house from these thiefs are very helpful.

      • Eufy also sell an alarm system which you can arm with a code when you leave the house.

  • Sorry to hear about your misfortune. It must be very distressing.

    Some solid advice above.

One thing I also have done is drill an extra hole in the garage door slides and slide a bolt in there. I have roller doors so I use a 10 x 120mm bolt from the outside ot the slide pointing inwards. I do this even when I am here so have gotten used to removing/replacing daily.
