New to iPhone (SE2) - Questions on iMessage through Dual SIM

I want to set up iPhone SE2 to achieve below using iMessage through dual SIM:

  • eSIM has a call and SMS only number without data (0400000000)
  • Physical SIM has a data only number without call and SMS feature (0411111111)

When sending iMessage it should use the data from physical data SIM (0411111111) only without incurring SMS charge from call only eSIM (0400000000). But the recipient should see the iMessage from 0400000000. I remember the recipient can see the iMessage from call only number 0400000000 when it is through WiFi data.

ChatGPT gave me below instructions, but I am not sure if the recipient can see the intended sender. If not what can be done?

  • Set up Dual SIM: Go to Settings > Cellular. You'll see your two lines listed here.
  • Label your lines: Assign clear labels (e.g., "Calls & SMS" for the eSIM and "Data Only" for the physical SIM) to easily identify them.
  • Choose default lines: Select which line you want to use for calls, messages, and data. Set the eSIM as the default for calls and SMS, and the physical SIM as the default for data.
  • Turn off iMessage on the eSIM: Go to Settings > Messages and turn off iMessage for the eSIM. This ensures that iMessage uses the data from the physical SIM only.
  • Turn on iMessage for the physical SIM: Go to Settings > Messages and turn on iMessage for the physical SIM. Make sure the data plan is active for the physical SIM.

Comments

  • If you already have your data routing via your data SIM all you need to do if you are on iOS18 -> Settings -> Apps -> Messages -> iMessage send/receive - This is where you control what numbers are active for iMessage and if you are starting a message with a new contact how it will appear.

  • Note the steps you have listed above are incorrect you don't turn off iMessage on the eSIM or enable it on the physical SIM as this will actually reverse what you are trying to achieve.

  • iMessage will just use the data for message, there is no data then messages will attempt via standard SMS (or RCS if that's already happened and compatible with who you send to). You want data on always, iMessage doesn't care or know where the data is coming from, it just needs it.

  • iMessage kinda uses the Apple Account in the background as the main identity for both sims.

In iMessage settings - there's an option where you can choose which number/email address the iMessage appears from. If you start a conversation with a number using 0411111111 and then change to 0400000000 - the other person doesn't actually get notified of that, the message appears to be coming from 0411111111.

With WhatsApp - you can install WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business - so make it look like two people - with iMessage unfortunately you can't do this.
