This seems like a decent discount on a popular, good "bang for buck" inflatable Kayak. I've had lots of fun bobbing around the Coorong (Murray river, SA) fishing in an inflatable kayak.

Was $10 cheaper last year: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/796407 . Currently $379 at Hardly Normal: https://www.harveynorman.com.au/intex-excursion-pro-k2-kayak… and more at Bunnings (special order).

I bought the K2 Challenger for around $125 a year and a half ago (now on special for $159) and have been very happy with the convenience (light and easy to transport) for the price. It's been quite tough and stood up to abuse so far. The Excursion Pro is supposed to be a bit more rugged so I've upgraded, perhaps on the way to eventually getting a Full Drop Stitch Kayak. I found this video to be a good, seemingly unbiased comparison of different kayak types: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okiV0XG9NB4

The Intex Challenger K2 is also on special as part of Prime Big Deal: $159 delivered (with Prime)

We had 2 x Alpaka Pacrafts that we used for years until our shed was destroyed in the buhsfires of 2020, I had imported them from Alaska way back in the day when the AUD was high. I often wonder how these compare, the pacraft is about $2500 or more because we once again find ourselves living near an awesome river.

The pacraft is different of course, folds down to sweet bugga all and we often cycled them in with our mountain bikes or hiked into shitty spots with a breakdown paddle and raft in a backpack

I see they also have a sale at the moment

    • Sounds like fun. This video seems to indicate that you can get a folding yak for around $350, perhaps a Chinese drop ship version for half that: https://youtu.be/IoOBweRn4v8?t=898

        Sorry, USD350

Great price. I bought this in ‘22 for $284. It’s durable and paddles well.

    • They're super tough. My raft is outside all year and still in great condition. Probably last 5 more years.

      • Croc country tough?

  • I bought this one for an amazing $80 in Feb 23. I guess it was from a deal here. They are great.

    • Great price! I think that the Excursion is a bit tougher than the explorer so that's why I went that way.

    • Different model. The excursion is meant to be more durable.

    Probably price matching Costco.

    • Looks like you were right, Costco is out of stock and Amazon deal has expired.

Here's the unpro version for $179 + cheap delivery. Cheaper than Amazon, but there's only 3 left.
    https://idyllicoutdoors.com.au/product/explorer-k2-kayak/

Idyllic Outdoors is in Victoria and sells heaps of Intex stuff. Great store!

  • Also available for the same price ($199 delivered) from Costco: https://www.costco.com.au/INTEX/Intex-Excursion-Pro-Kayak/p/….

I did add Costco as an alternative source when I posted the deal but I can't see where that shows up.

    • @ozbs25 Sorry, I didn't refresh before I made this comment re Costco so didn't see your comment.

      • No worries. Thanks for posting!

I have one, seems ok. Quite susceptible to wind but I guess that's to be expected. Remember to buy life jackets to go with it.

Great for floating around in shark infested waters..

Do you also caution people who are interested in buying a car or bike about the likely even higher associated dangers of being on the road? He he. I have to admit, I don't really know that but that's my gut feel.

I guess we all focus on different threats but unless you are heavily chumming yourself and the surrounding water, I don't think a shark attack on a kayak is really something to be overly concerned about.

      • I would if they were in a blow up car..

  • How reliable is the inflation on this?? Planning an overnight camping trip so if it deflates I’ll be upstream without a way home.

I've put many hours on my challenge K2 which is supposed to be less rugged and it hasn't failed me yet. But, you would definitely want to test it out rigorously to tease out manufacturing defects before relying on it because any product has a non-zero failure rate. Would also consider how punishing your route will be(rock/snag scraps, dragging over rough surfaces) at to whether you need something even more rugged.

If I could justify a $1500 spend, I might go for something like the sea eagle 473RL from wild earth for eg which is more rugged. Currently significantly discounted according to the website and other vendor pricing.

  • These were close to $600 during COVID.

Would this be suitable for a solo kayaker plus camping gear?

    • Would love to know the same, I’d like to use it solo as well as with a friend

    • I'm not really qualified to answer as I don't have this yak yet and i have only camped out of a car so packing light hasn't been a consideration…but… I'm going to say probably yes depending on if landing is beach or more snaggy and depending on conditions. I've thought about chucking a swag into my challenger K2 for camping on the Coorong (beach).

I haven't really exposed my challenger to sticks/snags so don't know how resilient it is to river conditions. Under side has held up well to dragging on beach during low tide etc.

Excursion is vinyl vs challenger being PVC according to Amazon comparison table so excursion should be tougher (I guess).

Thanks. I managed to grab one while it was on sale. I figured for the price it’s a good way to get out on the water and see if yakking is for me. Going to grab a decent paddle, pump and a PFD and see how I go!

Glad you got one before they went back up to almost double the discounted price!

          • @reu: Great deal, thanks for posting!

Looks like an all time low price on the INTEX 68624EP Motor Mount Kit at $20.

Thanks! Great discount. Perfect for my trolling motor. Looks a bit flimsy for an outboard even though it says up to 3hp.

  • what are locations around sydney a beginner can drop this in the water and not be washed out to sea?

    • +1

Narrabeen. The webcan usually works, but not today for some reason.

Penrith Beach would be good, but it's closed and may not open again.

    • +1

I forgot Manly Dam. I haven't been in ages, but I guess it's still alright. Bayview, Church Point and McCarrs Creek are popular with kayakers, but beginners should probably go with a group.

      • hmmm makes sense to go in a group - Narrabeen seems good since its not open water.

        • Yeah, Narrabeen is pretty calm. It drains into the sea over the beach, but that's about 2kms from the lagoon.
