  • Can i buy extra warranty??

  • +1

Love my Rog Ally X. It’s not for everyone but for me, it’s the best out there right now, all the tweaks that were needed from the original.

    • Do you run Bazzite?

      • +1

I did, but just recently removed it. All of a sudden one day I just couldn’t boot into it. Loved it until that point. Only major drawback when I was happily running it was battery drain while in standby was insanely high. Like 15-20% a day easily, by contrast with a few settings in windows I can leave games suspended for a week and lose like 4%.

For context too I have owned:
        Rog Ally
        Rog Ally X
        Legion Go
        Steam Deck LCD
        Steam Deck OLED

For my use case the best is the Rog Ally X. But that’s absolutely not going to be true for all.

I am excitedly waiting for the official Steam OS on Rog Ally X, and will 100% run that as my primary OS.

        • I ve been waiting for this. Is it true that Steam OS will come to Rog Ally X?. I am about to hit the buy button.

  • Wait for another 6 months this thing will drop below 1k. I won't buy it. Z2 will come out by then

I got my Asus ROG ally non extreme below $400. It will last me at least a year. Good enough without spending too much as that's the cost of a Nintendo switch

Also Switch 2 is rumoured to come in next year

    • I think the more frequent refresh in ways is a good thing, the fact that you got the Ally below $400 yet the new one is $1600 rrp gives lots of options for entry into this new eco of ‘console’.

But I think advising to wait is always silly personally. See ‘switch 2’ for more details.

I feel this console is solid but right now the Z1 extreme model of Ally is most value for money than Ally X.
You should be able to get new one around $900.

Otherwise can get a second hand or refurbished around $700

I'm saving for the next revised version I likely will buy this Ally X when it's cheaper. The non extreme is ok but not great to run AAA titles

The pricing as usual like all tech it's expensive when new. But as a casual gamer here I don't use it every day. It's not worth it for me to spend so much.

I feel the pricing is very much like Android phones for example Pixel 8 pro release was like $1599 then 6-8 months like around 1k. Or for those would got lucky with Optus loophole got it under $900 2 months in after release

This is a personal preference. I never buy tech brand new at release. Co worker bought Pixel 9 Pro at release for 2k I'm here laughing with $900 Pixel 8 Pro

Anyway for this Ally X, those who are buying, be aware this uses SSD 2280 not 2230 so you could fit normal NVMe into this thing for more than 1TB, also you would need to invest a Docking Station plus a 100w PD power supply and HDMI 2.1 cable for a docked setup. You might also want a carry case as well all this will set you up another $200 minimal.

Do not buy Ugreen Docking Station they are very poor

I know this because the whole Ally range can use the same Docking Station

        • You got a great deal for $400, I'm assuming you nabbed the deal via Marketplace or similar? Most I'm seeing on FB are wanting $650 at the lowest at the moment.

          • @BillyG687: Yeah but Z1 non extreme is not a good performer it's a good entry unit to try Handheld PC. It can however run Hoyoverse games which I play on medium settings quite well eg. Genshin, Honkai star rail And old titles run alright. But not the latest AAA

I original wanted get a new phone (as Pixel 8 pro is so bad for gaming, next best is Oneplus 12r) but decided to get Handheld as it performs better at this price point not forking 1k+ for new phone just for this

        • I think the issue for me is with the battery life of the original Ally. So I have $1200ish RRP ($900 if you’re lucky seconds hand) for a device I find almost completely useless due to my use case or an item that $1600 that’s super useful. Value proposition isn’t always $.

          • @cc23: The original Ally non extreme or extreme versions battery is not great. But it all depends what titles you play and what setting

However at most 2 hours in my experience. If you play heavy titles pretty much 1.5 hours Max.

The Ally X is better but still currently price is steep for that extra juice. The CPU is the same as original ally extreme model just more RAM, battery and 2280 SSD slot… If that's worth $400 more then sure take it.

            • @neonlight: For my personal use case, I play AAA games and use the 25W mode at that power id get approx 50 minutes on the Rog Ally, which just didn’t float my boat. But again, YMMV etc.

For me personally, if I’m playing indie titles I’d just use the switch OLED. The whole point of this, is that it’s a beast, therefore I want it to act like a beast and so use 25W almost the whole time.

              • @cc23: Cool I get it alternatively you can get PD 100w power bank about $80 to top up whilist playing

I never really wanted this to replace a gaming PC as long as it can run stuff in medium settings with respective framerates 45fps is good enough

                • +1

@neonlight: Yeah for sure as I say. I think we both have very valid opinions.

          • @cc23: $900 second hand for the z1 extreme? Have seen it for $750-even $700 if sometimes on Facebook marketplace.

        • I think it does USB c out from memory. Yes the problem with buying this is I works immediately want to upgrade it to 4tb, which just balloons the outlay.

          • @serpserpserp: You would want HDMI, Ethernet, while charging and playing without draining the battery and the Power supply it comes with I think it's only 60watts meaning you would need 100w to accommodate connectivity and usage while playing

  • Intel's new gen cpu has amazing battery life, I will wait for the next gen to be released

    • Need to watch I see. AMD Z2 might be more worthy

  • Currently out of stock on ASUS website.
Edit: code no longer working deal finished

  • Back in stock but code doesn’t work :(

  • Anyone who ordered received any shipping information yet from Asus or Dropship Wireless 1?

    • Not yet. I called wireless 1, who advised my address wasn't in their system.. So now they have confirmed my house exists, should be shipped in 1-2 business days. Might be worth a call.

      • Yep, thanks! I got the same response — "should be shipped out this week"

        • Update: received the Aus Post tracking from 'Logistics Admin'

    • My transaction is still pending

  • Considering there are handhelds with oled 7" 120-165hz screen coming out soon might be worth waiting.
