      Check the second image of the product listing. Specifies what refurbished means — "Manufacturer refurbished or seconds product may have cosmetic marks/scratches, damaged packing, and have minor non-essential accessories missing. The product has been checked by Sony technicians and assessed as in working order."

      Also has 1 year warranty from Sony Oz.

      I bought the WH XM5 during the last sale. It came in a generic looking box. The original case looked fine and the cables were neatly stored inside. The headphones were in good but used condition (some minor wear marks on the plastic) but the padding and foam looked fine.

      I bought the XM4's in the last sale, to my eye they looked brand new. Full retail packaging and they looked entirely unused. I think it really is the luck of the draw.

    Have heard that the XM5s aren't actually as good as the XM4s. Can anyone experienced with the two shed some light on this?

      xm5's ear cups dont fold in like the xm4's, the padding is thinner on xm5 and ear cups smaller so if you have large ears it'll be a problem. Likewise, xm4 thicker padding and acocmdating to large ears. However the xm5's have an actual useable mic unlike the xm4's is that matters. Sound quality wise i don't know, maybe someone else can help you

        the anc on 5 is much better, mic also. but xm5 doesnt fold….
        i think in 2024 get 5 is better at $330

      It's pick of the straws, usually in buyers' odds. One pair of refurb headphones I got in the past had cigarette smell. On other occasions, they looked/smelled like new.

    These are brand new basically. My XM4 case just had a scuff on it. They're worth it I've had mine for nearly a year no issues.

    Bought a "refurbished" Sony tv.

    Audio was DOA. No way it was tested.

    Sony refused to replace it.

    My advice is stay away from Sony refurbished. Seems like it's junk being sold in the hope people will put up with a problem

        But the noise cancelling xm5 muchhh better.
        So now im testing bose qc… they fold. But doesnt have auto off when take out from head… huh.. hard to find the perfect headphone… almost as hard as finding perfect gf

        U didn't really answer their question, just went on the defense.

        From my limited knowledge, the earpads, interior earcup mesh and the top pleather section are replaced, which are in direct contact with the wearer.

          From many reviews here a lot getting almost brand new sealed just a bit knock on the box. Doesnt matter how we explain when they read refub like laptop refub then it will not change their perception, so better just buy one and experience direct

    Ok there is one downfall with these earbuds (xm5's). When it's raining and you have a hood on being touch sensitive soon as the hood touches the side of the bud it's the same as using your finger, quite annoying really especially walking. They should have a lock out setting within the app.
    The other gripe I have is the buds are super slippery and of course you drop them all the time, just a simple texture of the plastic change would help.
